Awesome Camera

May 13, 2014

I shoot about 50/50 video and stills. I loved the GH3 and this is a great evolution in stills and essentially a revolution in video considering the price point. I'm not a pixel peeper, but my observation is that stills quality is slightly better than the GH3. Auto focus seems much improved in stills modes. There does appear to be a degradation in continuous auto focus performance when in 4K video modes but not a dealbreaker for me. Overall, I'm very happy with the decision to upgrade and would highly recommend the GH4.

Excellent Video and Still Camera

Oct 23, 2014

I have begun creating video business cards using this camera and the Panasonic shotgun mic. I love the quality of the 4K video and the sound quality is very good too. I also love that you can grab a still from the video - great for photographing children and pets who are always moving! I also have used it for some landscape photography on my last trip to Montana and love the images! All around great camera, light weight and excellent glass. The LCD is beautiful. The battery lasts twice as long as any I've used before.

Still Very Relevant in 2019

Dec 19, 2019

There's not much to write that hasn't already been written about the capabilities and quality of this offering from Panasonic. If you're wondering if the camera is still a contender in 2019, trust me--it is! I shoot a Panasonic UX180 and UX90. I bought this because the capabilities are similar to the UX90, which I use for B-roll. You get a large sensor and the same Panasonic color science. This is a perfect complement to the 90/180 for times when you want to throw on a shallow lens and get a shallow depth of field.

Best combination video / stills camera

Jun 30, 2014

The video quality is amazing even at 1080p, and the high frame rate, slow motion feature is awesome. It is easy to use if you are used to using a DSLR. I am just learning to use things like peaking and zebras, which are really useful. Also, it is much easier to get good audio. You don't need a pre-amp like a DSLR. Just plug in a good external microphone and adjust the audio levels in camera. So much easier than DSLRs. The quality of the photos is better than my Canon 7D. The autofocus is better than my Fuji-XT1.

Seamless step up to 4K

Jan 1, 2016

Having owned a GH2 and a GH3, the GH4 represents a seamless step up to the world of 4K video. It really feels and handles the same as the GH3, but the LCD really looks a lot better to me, making it better than the earlier models for shooting quickly without having time to set up an external monitor. I also like that all the accessories from my GH3 stepped right over to the GH4 (battery grip, batteries, lenses, Panasonic external mic, etc.) Still has good battery life like its predecessors. Great camera!

Pleasantly surprised.

Feb 26, 2019

I was a little hesitant in getting a 5 year old camera, and one with reported auto focus issues. I needed something good for video and ok for photography without breaking the bank, and I was not disappointed. The auto focus works pretty good, even in poor lighting conditions when paired up with Panasonic glass, I mostly use the 35mm-100mm f2.8 and a 25mm f1.7....no issues. It came with the latest firmware update from factory so I didnt have to bother with updates. Apparently that did the trick.

Been Using for 4 years

Sep 16, 2018

I've been using the Panasonic GH4 for about 4 years now and it is my go-to camera! I love this camera. It shoots great footage, is super lightweight and easy to transport. Has a nice range for VFR, although I do prefer the GH5 for shooting slo-mo. This camera has roughed it out with me on many shoots for my university, corporate work, and weddings. Has a lot of great menu options and is really use to maneuver once you get the hang of it. Just bought two to use as my shooting cameras at church.

Great camera

Aug 20, 2014

My first and immediate impression was that it doesn't look or feel like your typical dslr camera, but after a couple of weeks of playing around with it, I've grown to really appreciate the size and sturdy feel of the camera. I know most people may have second thoughts about the small sensor, but the 4k capability more than makes up for it, plus you have the option of picking up the metabones speedbooster, which really opens up the playing field. Great camera, I'm glad I picked it up!

Couldn't be more pleased!

Apr 13, 2016

Bought the GH4 to utilize the video aspects of the camera and to be able to use some of the Nikon lenses that I have. Manual operation is quit easy and presents no problem with older lenses. The camera does exactly what the specs say. Its easy to learn how to operate the buttons and the results are pleasing to this point. My older TM900 camcorder makes a very good B role for the GH4. I have tried most of the video formats with FCPX and have not had any problems editing the video.

Awesome

Nov 18, 2014

I'm an independent filmmaker and this little camera has been awesome. I switched from a Canon 6d to this and am completely happy. The 4k video is awesome for post and the colors on the GH4 are incredible. I got the active booster and so I am still able to use my Canon glass and it looks great. If there was a complaint, it would be that the camera is too small. The touch screen helps though. Just an amazing camera. Looking forward to shooting my first feature with this camera.

Awesome!

Jul 18, 2014

This camera rocks and I've been loving it so far. I use it mostly for the 4K video and have not been disappointed at all. The functions and button locations took some slight adjustment to get used to as I was coming from a Canon 5DmII, but it's been a pretty smooth transition. The footage looks very clean all the way up to 1600 ISO and it does surprisingly well in low light. I love the video mode display feature. For the price, you really can't beat it. This thing rocks.

Absolutely Amazing - a game changer

Jun 5, 2014

Wow. For the money, right now (June 2014) this is the best you can buy. I use it for video, but the stills are brilliant too. 4K footage using the Cinelike D profile with the Contrast and Sharpness wound down to -5 is fantastic. Make sure you get the right SDXC cards, especially if you shoot 200MB ALL-INTRA. The one issue I had - shooting on tripod with the 12-35mm f2.8: I left OIS on: result was shaky footage. Upgraded the lens firmware to V1.2. Problem solved.

Novice first dslr

Apr 7, 2016

As a new user of DSLR camera's I was worried that the GH4 would be a little overwhelming. To my delight I found that I picked up the basics of photo and movie making quickly primarily bc The Menu parameters are intuitive; now along with the advanced PDF manual and the many GH4 instructional youtube videos, I am expanding my artistic abilities. As an amateur or novice at best photographer/videographer, I could not be happier with this somewhat expensive purchase.

Best camera I've ever owned

May 14, 2014

I own a GH2, an AF100, and the 2.5k BMCC. This is by far my favorite video camera. The cine-v mode in particular gives you a nice, flat image, but is actually very nice on it's own. Panasonic listened to all the suggestions people have made over the years, and I think this is close to the perfect hybrid stills/video camera. Let me put it this way - I put my BMCC into storage. The GH4 is so much easier to use and has a wonderful picture. In short, it's awesome!

Great Camera!

Jan 25, 2016

I use the GH4 mostly for short film and commercial work. I use the Metabones Speed booster XL and Nikon F mount Rokinon Cine lenses. The features like the Histogram and Zebras are wonderful! The picture is very sharp and paired with the speed booster, has great dynamic range. The only thing I would recommend is to not underexpose the image. The noise can get pretty bad. However, if you check your histogram and light the scene adequately it isn't a problem.

Video Producer and Director of Photography. Like any video camera, you should know it first. After that you will appreciate every thing that you can do with him and what it offer to you. Focus what kind of job you are going to do, and you know if it is the right camera for you. If you use the right Light Kit Configuration, you can deal with the video noise. Interviews, documentary, shorts films are my arena and I can say i feel very well with this machine!

Love Love Love

Jul 21, 2014

The GH4 is fantastic. As a legacy user of the GH1, GH2, and GH3, I am very please with the amount of updates and design items included. Cleaner at higher ISOs than the previous cams and works seamlessly with the MFT lenses and GH3 accessories. The frame burst in RAW is insane! If you have a fast SD card, it will seemingly shoot nonstop exposures. Still much lighter than a full frame camera so the all day work environments are not too demanding. Thumbs Up!

This camera pack a massive array of features, 4k internal recording being the big one.Given that it has a micro 4/3s sensor, you will get noise, but mane gable unto iso 800.I use this camera for product videos, and the image quality is breathtaking, you could shoot at 4k and edit at 1080p and you have a medium shot and a close-up.The 10bit 4:2:2 over HDMI is another world, most people don't realize how bad 8 bit really is until you compare it to 10 bit.

Great camera, can't say the same for the Interface unit

Oct 27, 2015

I love the GH4. The image quality, the variable frame rate, the time lapse feature, etc. However, the interface unit stinks. I had nothing but sync issues, and an echo/delay effect that I simply could not get rid of, not to mention the 15lb battery pack you need to lug around, undermines all the advantages of shooting on a small 4k-capable DSLR. I returned the combo package and got the GH4 with a Beachtek adapter which allows for XLR audio recording.

I am blown away. It is a great little camera. The quality is impeccable and super clean and easy to function. 4K is stunning! Easy to edit with latest Adobe Premier on MBP. 1080p renders looks fantastic! Need large HD TV to appreciate detail. Love the slow motion. Decent Bokeh with fast MFT lenses. Low light is plenty good too. 4K on an SD card = priceless. Everyone will be copying this camera soon. They are fools if they don't. Great job Panasonic!

Best budget and performance camera

Jan 28, 2016

GH4 is undoubtedly a good camera. I know still many people complain about the low light performance. I had before, but I solved it! Actually you can just buy the lens brand like SLR Magic or Voigtlander which provide F/ 0.95. That is how I deal with low light. The only thing I really don't like GH4 is the position on its Mic jack, which made it loose easily. Also you can't hear the recorded audio with headphone AFTER the video recording begins...

Very Satisfied

Feb 12, 2015

Using it for low budget commercial use, event videos & promos. Switched over after using Canon (6D/T5i/M) for a few years & became progressively dissatisfied with Canon. The GH4 is comfortably compact, yet bursting with functionality & options. I have been so satisfied since purchasing a few months ago. Only complaint, a little too noisy with high ISOs in low light, but not unusable. Also wish the remote iOS app had a full screen preview option.

Beautiful

Sep 2, 2014

I have not been able to play with my camera enough. There are many functions I still need to discover and use. But what I've done with it so far has been impressive. The photos and video have both turned out good. I'm still wanting to achieve a certain quality with both so I am still working on the settings for that perfect picture. But the camera seems very sturdy and durable. Like so many others who have given this 5 stars, I can now see why.
