After years of using a SM57 to record guitar I wanted something with a wider frequency response. I do quite bit of live work so I did not want to buy ribbon and risk damage in a rough environment. I pulled the trigger on the PR30 after a lot of searching and reading of the reviews. This mic does not disappoint. As others have pointed out it is very neutral and provides an accurate representation of what it is put in front of. I have found you need very little eqing with this mic. First off, it's a Heil, so I had high expectations even before it arrived. I bought this to round out my collection of broadcast microphones. I already own Heil's PR40, and it flatters my beefy voice - however, when we have guests, the '40 sometimes doesn't do so hot. Their voices end up sounding a bit bigger than reality, and in cases where their voice is particularly high-toned, muddy. The '30 fixes that problem. It inherits a lot from the '40, like great rear-rejection, and clean, vibrant reproduction of the human voice (something you don't often get with a dynamic). It then adds a bit more detail in the high-midrange, making it perfect for voices that are less than beefy to the naked ear. ... More

Its hard for me to put the sonic qualities of something into words. I will try to compare this to the Shure SM7B, another favorite large diaphragm dynamic microphone that some will be familiar with. I record acoustic instruments, like banjo, mandolin, dobro, guitar and vocals. The SM7B sounds more tame and neutral to me, even with its presence boost engaged. The Heil has a very natural sound, but more lively and flattering. The Heil tracks need less treatment. I prefer the PR 30 for acoustic instruments. If it had a bass roll off switch, I think it would be perfect. I have to pay attention to placement, or guitar will sound a little boomy. The SM7B has a smoother sound that takes processing well and doesnt pick up transient noises as much...so I like it on dobro and vocals. If I had to use the PR 30 for everything, I think I would still be happy with it, but the SM7B is better at rejecting off axis noises. ... More

If you like the way your guitar and amp sound to your ears, and just want a neutral, uncolored mic to capture the tone you worked hard to dial in, this is it! Gone is the unnatural nasal honk and buzz that I hear when mic'ing distorted guitar amps with an SM57 or an e609. Gone is the brittle high end of the i5. Distorted tones I record have the same pleasing tone that I dial in at the amp when I put this mic in front of the cab. It might cost 2 1/2 times what those mics cost, but get one of these and you'll finally really hear the tone of your guitar rig on your recordings or through the PA. ... More
Heil PR30 is GREAT!

If you want a quiet, high quality microphone for broadcasting or podcasting, this is a great mic. Crushes the Heil PR40. I'm in a very noisy room with no treatment, and listeners say I sound like I'm in a studio. To put it into perspective. My ai conditioner is running full blast, my refrigerator is behind me, and I have concrete walls with no padding. You can't tell.

great mic, very clean sound. i would recommend to anyone who doesnt have 350 or 400 for the higher end competition. end fire element and internal shockmount are genius and the construction is flawless, let alone its about half the weight as any other mic in its field. keep it up heil sound!

I recently bought my 2nd Heil PR30, and I have been impressed by the results on a variety of sessions. The PR30 is a large diaphragm DYNAMIC mic, though it looks like a big condenser. I have some nice condenser mics in my collection (Rode, AKG) and this mic works as well or better on sources that you think a condenser is a must. For example, I used it recently on acoustic guitar and the sound was just perfect. It has a high frequency response up to around 18k, so all the highs were there, and of course the lows and mids were amazing. I have also had great results on toms, especially floor tom, guitar amps, bass amps, and percussion. Your 57s will get dusty. I have tried it on vocals and it was pretty amazing. I play and record with two guitar setups, one being a 1967 Fender Princeton amp. I read recently that using two mic's, one condenser and one dynamic is a great way to capture different nuannces of a classic amp like the Princeton. Last year I purchased a Sennheiser MK4 from B&H and in adding the PR30 I am able to capture the sound I want at any volume I play. Awesome mic.

Been looking for a multi-purpose mic for at a reasonable cost and this is the winner. It's fantastic for vocals and my acoustic guitar. I haven't needed to use it for other instruments yet but I hear this thing records drums and piano really well, too, for those of you concerned about such things. Two thumbs up.

I've used 57's on my Boogie Mark 4. Not to mention 421's, RE20's, 609's, 414's you name it. This is the one! Nothing but sweet spot. This thing is bullet proof too. For live guitar cabinets or vocals......look no further! (Bob, you nailed it again.)

Was super fortunate to be able to snag this mic on discount; I'd been eyeing it for years and was finally able to pull the trigger. This thing sounds fantastic on snare drums, acoustic guitar, vocals..I haven't been disappointed yet.
