I love this lens!
Where do I start. Sharp: so sharp you will cut yourself; Light weight: no problem hand holding; Versatile: nice range that even can be used for portraits with compression blurring of background; Range: for you wildlife shooters, 1) 1.4 tc takes you to 560mm at f8 with NO loss in sharpness, 2) switch to crop mode takes you to 840mm and if you use Sony zoom, even more, 3) with 2x you are 800 at f11 and with good light, excellent sharpness, then you add crop and possible zoom. My 17 lb. 800 is starting to gather dust. It and the A9 are a killer combo. Happy, happy, happy,

Happy with this purchase!
Used the lens in Glacier National Park for wildlife photography. I was very pleased with the photos. The focus was sharp & the zoom was smooth.

I would definitely buy this product again.
Excellent lens typical of all the Grand Master Sony lenses. It surpasses any Nikon zoom lens within its range including the current Nikon f 2.8 70-200 and the 80-400 which are a bit soft in the corners. In combination with the Sony A9 body the focussing of this lens is accurate and virtually instant. It is extremely sharp and contrasty at all focal lengths including 400mm.

Tack sharp and fast focus
I use this on the A9 and the A7rII. On the A7RII the focus hunts alittle and is not as fast as when mounted on the A9. But that is the camera bodies and not the lens. I have been using the Canon 400mm 5.6 on both of these bodies. The Sony lens, at 400mm, is as sharp and possibly sharper then the Canon lens and the Canon is one hell of a sharp lens. This is a fine lens and can be used effectively on either of these Sony bodies.

I have waited 2 years for this lens and it is worth it!
Very sharp image quality. I have been using it with the a6500 for wildlife and comparing it to my old setup of a Nikon D500 with the 200-500mm. It seems just as sharp. This lens is much quieter than the Nikkor. The size and weight is nice for hiking. The lens has an amazingly close minimal focus distance and is surprisingly good for shooting insects. I like the removable foot which makes packing it into a tight camera backpack easy. If Sony is sm... Show More

Another high quality lens from Sony
Another high quality lens from Sony. Snapping on the FE 2x to shoot the Eclipse next week! I used this on my A9 and my Sony FS100 Video Cam with excellent results. Glad I left Nikon!

A Week with the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens
I am very happy to report that this lens is one of the best lenses Sony has produced to date. Read my user experience below. https://wordpress.com/read/blogs/91074131/posts/468 As a postscript I ordered the lens for myself.

Finally a Sony FE Lens with a Long Reach!
When this lens was announced in April, I ordered it immediately and sold my FE 70-200 lens. Now that I finally have it, I'm already getting shots of wildlife that I've dreamed of. Of course it's a big lens, but not that much bigger than the 70-200. It focuses really fast, in accordance with the A9 to which it's attached. The results are beautifully sharp, with great color. If you set the camera to APS-C, you can get an even longer reach. With this lens, my set is complete. Highly recommended!

I would buy this product again, a 5 plus in my book!
A6500 & FE100-400 - fast focus and very sharp all the way from 100 to 400! Test included hand held, Opteka shoulder mount, monopod & tripod. The lens has many features that make it easy to use!

Great Lens for Wildlife Photography
I use this lens for my wildlife photography. The lens on my A7rii is fast and very sharp. I recently ordered the 1.4x to going along with this combo. I let some friends test the lens out on their A6300 and they pre ordered the next day.

It was worth the wait.
This lens is as good as the reviews say it is. Over the years having had several previous similar lenses -- 70-400 and some super telephotos e.g. 150-600 -- I can say this one beats them all, as predicted. Amazingly, it even gives good image results at 1200 mm on my Sony A6500 using the 2x converter! At that extreme, the autofocus is very slow and pretty much limited to shooting wide open and contrast is reduced, but the images are good. At norma... Show More

Best Native Telephoto Lens Greater than 200mm
I use this lens for birds and wildlife primarily, but the close focusing capabilities make it a versatile lens for portraits and landscape also. It is a little on the short side for birds, but it pairs great with the FE 1.4x Teleconverter with apparent no negative effects on focusing speed nor sharpness. I use this with the A7R2, and the focusing speed is much better than other similar lenses I have tried in the past. I've had both versions of th... Show More

Definitely would buy this again
Finally a true telephoto for the alpha series! Photos taken with this and the ARII where sharp and bright. Handholding is possible but a tripod definitely enhances the result. Solid construction. Especially useful is the lens hood with the cutout to rotate the circular polarizer.

It's a good lens
It's a good lens, not a great one. It could be far sharper. Having previously used the Canon equivalent, the Canon was a far better lens. Is it worth the price? That's for the customer to decide. If they're dissatisfied it can always be returned in the exact same condition it arrived in. Is it worth the hype and the cost? ........ No.

Amazed by This Lens
Came from a Nikon D500 with a Nikon 80-400 and this lens lens on either the A9 or A6500 blows it away in image quality. Then add the 14.x or 2.0x and IQ hold up much better than I expected. Very impressed with Sony's latest products!

Exceptional lens
Just received this lens and spent several hours testing it. First I shot many images of my bookcase at various focal lengths with my a7rII to see the I got a good copy of the lens. I checked every corner very carefully. I mostly shot all the tests at f11 because I am a landscape photographer and this is the f stop I normally use. Everything looked great. So far I'm keeping the lens. Next I took the lens outside and tried it at all focal lengths t... Show More

Incredible Lens
I own or have owned nearly all of the Sony FE lenses. I think this is the best lens of them all in terms of relative performance. As a note, I have fairly extensively shot the Nikon 80-400mm II on D8XX bodies, the Sony A-mount 70-400mm II on the A99/A7RII and the great Canon 100-400mm II on the 5DSR/A7RII. This lens is noticeably sharper than all of them at 400mm, wide-open. Overall performance on the A9 is absolutely stunning! By the way, the Really Right Stuff Arca Swiss plate for the Sony GM 70-200mm f2.8 works perfectly on this lens, replacing the Sony bracket.
