Shure FP3 falls off EV RE50/B

Just purchased the Shure FP135 wireless system, consisting of a FP3 plug-on transmitter and camera-mounted receiver, then came to realize the EV RE50/B doesn't have a click-lock slot at the base of the mic body where the XLR connector fits in. The XLR cables don't have much of a problem staying in the mic, because it's somewhat of a snug fit, not tight though. However, I didn't notice the lack of this little notch-like slot at the base of the mic where XLR cables lock latch into, to prevent the cable from falling out/off the mic. Well, when you add the weight of a plug-on wireless transmitter to the equation, the plug-on wiggles at the base of the mic, and simply falls off the mic with very slight provocation, making the plug-on attachment useless, risking damaging (or ruining) the plug-on and ruining your audio. All this caused by the lack of that little slot into which the mic cable lock fits into, and where the plug-on locking latch fits into, preventing the two from separating while in use. Yes, I thought of a couple of winds of black gaffer's tape could likely fix the problem, but it seems there are plenty of other mics out there that are at least as good the EV RE50/B, which have that locking slot at the base, so why fool around with these tacky field fixes when you're working with pro ENG gear? Yes, I've seen plenty of ENG work with Sennheiser plug-ons, but that's not the point. Why the heck didn't EV just join the human race and slot their mics the way everybody else does? I don't think it's the Shure plug-on that's the problem because I just received a new one back from the Shure factory as a replacement that was checked out by their techs. The old one was too tight a fit, and the release wouldn't work without much force. The replacement works fine on Shure and Audix mics, all of which have the locking slots. The plug-on snaps into place quite easily and unsnaps with the release button on the plug-on just as easily. Once locked in place, the plug-on and the mic form one inseparable unit, just like you'd expect. I don't think it's the mediocre frequency response that particularly recommends this mic, nor the fact that it's an omni, there must be far better voice-equalized omni dynamics, especially for this price. Just be aware of what I missed: there's no locking slot in case you're planning on using a plug-on, Shure FP3 or not. Or take your chances with a Sennheiser not falling off, or back to black gaffer's tape. I'm guessing that simply relying on a friction bond to hold the two units together would eventually experience some wear, no matter how tight the fit at first, as I would expect that bond to loosen up with time. I just baffled why there's no (stupid) little slot there. I've informed customer service by email of this flaw, and am awaiting their response to my request for a return and refund. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this shortcoming until after my 30 day return period had expired by about 4 weeks, so let's see what happens. If customer service rejects my request, I guess I'll be using gaffer's tape, unless another idea pops up. One other thing: If you have the extra dough, and have overcome this slot problem, you might consider getting the model with the slightly longer body, as this one is kind of short, where many ENG applications show the mic being held at the connector position to allow enough reach to get to the subject of the interview. Just to add a counter-point to the Most Liked Negative Review which stated that his RE50/B did not have a locking XLR Collar. I have a (2013) Electro-Voice RE50/B and it definitely has a locking XLR Collar on the bottom and my Sennheiser G3 Plug On transmitter locks securely and does not fall out.

The EV did not disappoint on its first use at the London Notting Hill Carnival launch. I was commissioned to produce three short clips for webcast and a 40 minute film of the event. The EV was used for interviewing VIPs and distinguished guests. Linked to a Shure FP33 audio capture was pristine despite my 15 year old son at the controls. No echo or handling noise inside and certainly no wind noise outside. I didn't even use a windshield! The presenter I used kept waving the mic around initially due to nervousness (or did she lie to me about not being camera shy)? Not a single pop. There were no reflections in the video footage due to the matt black finish which gave it a quality look too. First impressions - excellent sound capture with quality you can feel. I picked up this mic for my personal ENG kit after using several at various television stations. These things are wonderful, literally go through wars and keep on working. Exceptional reproduction and response, yet relatively forgiving if the reporter can't get quite close enough or get the perfect angle. It's dynamic so power is never an issue. I run it through a JuicedLink XLR-mini adapter, and find that I get very adequate levels. A true classic that still performs with the best!

I use this microphone as a go-to in all news gathering situations, especially when things get too noisy for a lav. The noise isolation on the RE50/B is top notch, as is the sound quality for general news gathering needs. These microphones can take a beating and keep on performing at a high level. It has never failed me in any weather situation I have come across in the field. Only negative I can think of is that the set screw for the XLR tends to come loose occasionally, but this is going to be true with any mic that is put through the ringer. ... More

I shoot interviews for my own online channel and finally (after three years of borrowing from friends) I wanted my own. I was looking for a mic that was long enough to fit my 2x2 micflag. After reading the reviews and seeing the price, I felt comfortable in going with the RE50/B and it's just everything I could ask for in terms of style and ease of use. I also bought a wind protector which holds quite nicely.

I purchased this mic because of its omnidirectional capabilities and it served its purpose during its first job in use. What Im about to tell you is absolutely 100% true. While shooting a rehearsal dinner the Mother of the Groom picked up the ElectroVoice RE50/B and began to speak but what she didn't realize was that she was holding the mic upside down. Even with the mic being held upside down the audio still sounded good. I have been using this mic mainly for news broadcasts and packages, including in loud settings. I found that this mic handles a wide range of applications even voice overs when I can't get into the studio. For the money, it's a great buy. I do wish it came with a wind screen though, seems like a miss for the price point. Otherwise seems like a workhorse of mic.

I've had my RE50B for years, but maybe this reviewer has an even older version or something. I can confirm that the RE50B has a locking XLR connector. A cable or transmitter is not going to fall off unless there's something wrong with the connector on the cable or transmitter. My E-V mic is great, but I'd like to compare a Sennheiser MD-46 or 42. The Senn sounded a little clearer on one YouTube review I watched recently. Does anyone know if E-V or Senn is better in the wind?

I've been using some version of the RE50B mic for nearly 20 years now. It is my go-to field mic for radio reporting. The mic produces excellent audio and has very little handling noise. Of all of the mics I have, this one works the best in windy conditions. (I use it with a nice windscreen.) It's an all-around good mic.

I have been using electro-voice for over 4 years. I have never had a problem with it. Clear audio, great for ENG, I've done voiceovers,field shoots,I've used them on multiple jobs. This is a professional microphone. No phantom power though, but hey if that's the only downfall I'll take it. If you use an H4n like I do it works fine too, I plug it into my mackie audio board, without fail it works. Whatever you plug it into, you are getting a quality microphone.

you may be surprised but RE50 is my favourite for micing guitar amps. it's freq range from 80Hz to 13kHz gets me what is all vital and necessary sound. it works not only on very noisy and crowded stage but also in a recording studio as alternative/2nd sound source.

Well, the sound is great. It could have a longer neck. If you use a mic flag then the mic is little short. But the sound is great!!! No sibilance and no wind noise when you talk close to it. Great buy!!

I have worked in broadcasting for 15 years and in my opinion there is still no other microphone to beat the RE50 in the one-mic-fits-all category. It is rugged, ultra reliable, offers excellent sound for interviews with low handling noise and good wind shielding.

I use this mic to do interviews for radio pieces. The sound is great. Durable, reliable, versatile to a certain extent (not the best mic for recording big live music events, for example). Minimal handling noise. Perfect mic for recording voices of people within close range.

Use it any time it need a dependable stick mic. Seldom need a wind screen. Reporters drop it all the time and keeps working fine. When the finish gets dinged up you can send it in to be refurbished.

This mic came with the Sennheiser EW 100 G3 Series Dual Basic Kit (B / 626 - 668 MHz) i received as a gift, and it really comes handy, and as the kit comes with the wireless transmitter, well, it's definitely a no brainer. Excelent sound quality with nothing to set up or do to the mic, other than connecting the cable and starting to talk.

The sturdy construction and outstanding audio quality make this our go-to field mic. The internal windscreen works well under normal to moderately windy conditions. Although omnidirectional, it performs well when held close in loud environments.

Great ENG Mic! I shot an interview using this mic in a very crowded room. I was astonished by how clear the recordings were. The background noise was still present but was at a much lower level than I expected.
