High-Performance Hybrid at an Unbeatable Price

Dec 2, 2015

I need to preface my review with the fact that I am a long-time Sony-camcorder user and am mostly basing my review on other Sony camcorders that I have used, own, or researched. I consider this a hybrid-camera: one that was born out of Sony's R&D with previous models. It takes the concept of the ENG-style shoulder camcorder, combines it with the form-factor of the EX1, borrows the prosumer features of the NX3/1, keeps the optical/imaging system o... Show More

Amazing At This Price

May 23, 2016

I know most will say if it isn't 4K then why bother. Realistically, many clients still opt for DVD and some for Blu Ray, so although 4K is a great acquisition format, for smaller budget jobs and ENG use, 2K is more than good enough. Keep in mind the price level of this cam is on par with Sony's own top of the line consumer cam. If you can get past the 4K issue, this is the best bargain in a fully professional camera available to date. There are a... Show More

A lot of camera for the price!

Apr 6, 2016

I recently picked up this camcorder based on other reviews I've read for a number of reasons. A few months ago I decided to delve into 4K land via the JVC GY-HM170 and I am very happy with the results, but dealing with the huge files has become a turnoff. I know I can just film in 1080p, but all the reviews I've seen say the Sony NX100 really shines in low light even with about 15db of gain added. That intrigued me so I decided to go ahead and ma... Image Quality and Features That Should Cost Twice As Much

Jan 2, 2016

I had been in the market for a new pro-level camcorder for a while, but when I saw the specs and affordable price for the NX100, I was sold immediately. I work primarily in sports and broadcast production and Sony equipment has a sterling reputation in our field. Along with the affordability, it seemed like a great fit. I didn't realize just how great of a fit it was until I first got out in the field with it. The size and weight are perfect. It'... Show More

Great DSLR-Style Camcorder for the Price!

Jan 22, 2017

I bought my Sony NX-100 in May of 2016. I really do like this camera a lot - it has a great set of features and shoots incredible quality video, even in low light. I compare it to a DSLR simply due to its control rings and manual control buttons. There are a couple small things I don't like about the camera that I would have liked to know before buying. That being said, there were no deal breakers here - I would have bought the camera regardless.... Show More

A potentially great camera spoiled by design flaws

Feb 9, 2016

Based around Sony's venerable 1 CMOS sensor, the HXR-NX100 delivers fantastic image quality, especially for the price, but is let down by design omissions that make it cumbersome to use in the field.Firstly, the good: Image quality is fantastic. The 1 sensor is capable of producing pleasing bokeh, and the lens covers a very usable range. The picture profiles are adequately customisable to take advantage of the 50mbps 8bit XAVC-S footage this came... Show More

This camera has been a work horse

Mar 29, 2018

I have owned this camera for 20 months. In that time I have recorded more than 25TB of terrific video. It has been the video broadcast camera for two seasons of my Son's high school football team. We are talking rain, wind, hot, cold, snow, day, night and beautiful perfect weather. I have recorded full 8 hour conferences on the extended battery power. I love the controls on the camera. I can shut down the audio in an instant. That is a valuable f... Show More

High Quality Run-n-Gun Video Camera

Dec 27, 2016

This has turned out to be a great addition to my video/photo production arsenal. I do a variety of shooting, but a lot of what I do centers around my RayJ Reviews video blog. I cover a lot of festivals, street performers and live bands. Everything moves fast and the lighting is constantly changing. I demand professional video quality even under tough circumstances and this camera delivers. It's sensor size is not the largest, but large enough to ... Show More

The well lit stage concert KING!!.. it just feels cheap..

Nov 21, 2018

Ok here is the real deal. This camera will fool you. When I opened the box and played with the menus I started getting upset and I was about to return it.... HOWEVER, when you use this camera to shoot a conference or event that has good lighting the XAVCS codec produces an image that was better than my c300 which had a sharp prime lens on it!!! I was like.... whoa... and when you add the fact that you have a nice zoom option and dual SD cards.. t... Show More

Couldn't be happier

Feb 23, 2018

I upgraded the Sony NX100 from a Sony NX30, and I couldn't be happier. The image quality and zoom capability are perfect for my needs; one of my first complex shoots with it was a ballet performance in an outdated theater (very old lighting system), and I shot from the booth (about 100' from the stage). I still captured crisp, clear balanced close-ups of the solo dancers with very little manual adjustment. I mostly use this camera for business ma... Show More

Just what I needed

Feb 8, 2016

The nx100. It's what I needed. This camera cost less than my vx1000, vx2100. Does more than both and worth the money you pay for it. I like that it is a camcorder form factor. I have RX10 both A and B models. I needed a camcorder form camera and this fits the bill. One inch sensor has very good image. All the controls I need. At a price that I could respect. There are some things I don't like. The view finder is small and not very bright, so you ... Show More

Good For the Price...

Sep 11, 2019

This is NOT a bad camera for the price. Better than a consumer camera, but not a full-on Cinematography camera either. Not great in super low light and the menu is a little bit of a pain to navigate. The small LCD monitor isn't great so I have 5.7 Feelworld external monitors attached on 3-way shoe splitters. Battery life is pretty decent if you opt to purchase larger batteries like 970's. Really good picture quality for the price point. The 1 chi... Show More

Right on Target

Mar 20, 2016

Video professional since the old days of 21lb shoulder mounts. This unit has everything anyone would want at a great price. One well kept secret is that the Image Stabilization system is NOT overriding. No floaty seasick look. Finally! The lens has enough zoom for any normal shot. Wish it was just a bit wider. Big deal. Use one of my Cinema DSLR's then with a 17-40 lens. The NX100's Focus is always spot on. On Full Auto it does everything for me ... Show More

Very Impressed

Dec 25, 2015

This is my first pro-level camcorder and I'm glad I made the step up. I use it to record school performances for the kids and nothing beats it with a nice video tripod. At standing room only events it commands respect by its size alone - assuring me a clear shot while those hand holding smaller camcorders end up with people standing in front of them. Main features which made this the choice for me were the 3 separate rings for iris, zoom, and foc... Show More

Wow - Exceeded my expectations!

Jun 6, 2016

I bought 2 of these to go along with an AX33 I already had so I could get consistent colors and quality. This weekend I was on 11 different outdoor, and some indoor, locations from 7 am to 9:30 pm (EST) One NX100 was on a tripod, the other on a Shape shoulder rig with a shotgun mic and the AX33 was on a jib. I've been reviewing my clips and could not be happier. Crisp, clean, great dynamics, great low light performance, wide shots, close ups, pan... Show More

1. In a very well lit ballroom, I was at F3.7-F4, (cameras widest aperture) and 18db gain ( wish I could capitalize the number cause it is excessively high). at 18db, there was still no grain (but I already knew that). I was even using a 500 Watt Lowel Omni at distance of 40 feet, barely effective.2. for many useful settings, you have to activate the menu, like white balance, and other settings you might want to change. you have to go 4 levels de... A new Paradigm

Mar 15, 2016

Just finished my first shoot with this guy and I like it. The clear zoom function is simply amazing. For a 12:1 lens to reach out like this with the clear zoom is mind-blowing. Mainly, it is also a new paradigm as far as the gain switch is concerned. You can go up to 15db and not notice a difference. It's like boosting the ASA on a DSLR. There's no downside because of the size of the sensor. White balancing is different as well. You can just leav... Show More

Solid Camera

Feb 8, 2016

I use the product to record our services and messages at our small congregation. We also use it to get a signal from our worship space to our parent's room, so it serves a dual purpose. The reason we got it is because it had many pro features without the price tag. Yes, we could have got one of the better ones with a higher price tag, but I was particularly intrigued by the 1 sensor and the low-light performance, which it has definitely lived up ... Show More

Occasionally a "thick fogbank" destroys focuswhile recording

Jul 26, 2018

We'd give the camera five stars (or more) if it were not for the focus problem I'm describing here. We have two of these cameras, and totally love one of them. On the other one, occasionally and unpredictably, the focus will suddenly and without warning go completely crazy, and it looks like a super-thick fogbank has appeared in front of the lens (see the picture). I've seen this problem reported for other Sony video cameras, as well, but it seem... Show More

I use this camera for mainly sports and I've always liked the way Sony camera work with features that make things easy to use. The only couple of features that I don't like is the position of the hot shoe in reference to the rest of the weight of the camera. It's front heavy. I use and external monitor most of the time and it makes this camera very lens heavy. I wish they would have balanced the camera more. There are also a lot of manual feature... Show More

The light sensitivity is really good at f/2.8, the lens rings are very comfortable and having two card slots is just perfect. I've been using this camera for a while and I've noticed two great things about it: -The image is very sharp. For many years I've been videotaping our community chorus, using two or three angles and Sony HDR-FX7s with HDV/DV mini/DV Cassettes. Uploading clips to Final Cut ProX from these cameras is very time consuming, especially a two hour show with three angles. Using HXR-NX100s uploading clips from memory cards is a huge improvement. Pros: First things first, you're going to want to set the camera to still mode in the picture profile settings. It's just a better shot and really gets the darks right. Without that it can be very grainy at times and sketchy in low light. Combine that with the XAVC format and you really get some great shots for a good value. It's also very easy to use and the on camera buttons and wheels are all really solid when you get used to it. Cons: It doe... Show More
