Wonderful Sharp Lightweight Lens

Mar 9, 2020

This has become my newest favorite Sony native lens. The 35mm f/1.8 is one of the three lenses every photographer should have. This gem works extremely fast and accurately with both face/eye-AF on both humans and animals and in any light. I have used it in a dark room with a 25 watt bulb and it easily locks onto either an eye or face. The background separation and bokeh is soft and round with no onion rings. The build quality is very nice for the... Show More

Well, maybe.

I really struggled giving this thing 4 stars...wish I could go 3 1/2. I had a chance before purchasing this lens to handle 2 of them, and they both wobbled. It's just a characteristic of this lens that it feels like something heavy is shifting back and forth inside until you mount it and power up your camera. So here's the good: 1. Sharp - no surprise as it's a modern lens and they're all pretty sharp these days. 2. Form factor - this is a smal... Show More

Perfect lens for enthusiast

Sep 13, 2019

Since I jumped on ff I always was looking for a perfect 35 mm, I never feel in love of 50mm fov. I have had vintages like minolta md 35 1.8, canon fd f2, and voigtlander ultron 35 mm 1.7 VM mount, all which I was using with techart. So, I was more than happy to know that Sony finally has decided to do a fast 35, Regarding it price, I wasnt part of those who complaint about it, just check prices of the vintages I listed and of the voigtlander,.. ... Low Light Auto Focus King

Feb 28, 2020

So this completes my trinity Sigma 24-70 2.8, 85 1.8 FE, and 35mm 1.8 FE. Very sharpe with little distortion. This transforms my FF camera with my 24-70 f2.8 With extended grip and big flash to almost a APS C camera without a grip and flash. The perfect walk around camera with instant accurate focus (better than the 85) that is great in low light without losing the beautiful FF look. To me 35 mm is much more useful than a 50mm without going fish ... Show More

It is one of the best Sony ever produced, with some flaws

Jan 3, 2020

I am a street photographer, and to me, the quality of optics is less important compares with the weight and focusing accuracy. This lens does just that for me. I sure enjoy the 1.4 and Zeiss logo for the more professional look, but I have walked over 15 miles in a 12 hour day, so the less exhausted I am, the more energy I have left for creativity. For the amount of money spent, I wish it comes with weather seal and metal lens hood, as most peopl... Show More

I have BIG concerns about this lens

Oct 23, 2019

I purchased this lens after watching good reviews. The first lens I received had something heavy inside the lens sliding back and forth. I returned it for another. The 2nd lens has the same issue. Something heavy sliding back & forth inside the lens. You can feel it when you tip it back and forth. When I put the lens on the camera and power up the camera. This heavy sliding effect stops. So far the lens is sharp, so I assume this lens is supposed... Show More

Fantastic little lens!

Sep 13, 2019

Im super impressed by the sharpness and contrast of this TINY lens. We had been using the Sigma Art 35mm previously and ordered this little guy as soon as we heard of it. Did some brief testing between the sigma and this lens and there is a very noticeable difference in color and contrast - the Sony having more pop. The Sigma is a great lens too, but this lens is so much more compact and delivers stunning images. We also shoot on the 85mm GM, 50mm ZA, and 24mm GM so Im not afraid of lugging around a bigger lens for better quality. But I dont have to compromise with this fantastic little lens.

Edge to edge sharp

Oct 9, 2019

I had previously discovered that most affordable wide angle lenses don't have edge to edge sharpness until f/4. Pressed by multiple situations when I had to work in low light wide open and still have decent details, I searched reviews until I found out that this Sony 35 mm f/1.8 may be worth trying. I tested it and was blown away by the sharpness wide open. The low light quality is unbelievable. Yes, it has some violet fringes when used in strong backlight - but they can easily be corrected in Camera Raw. Purists may be put off by lack of distance /fstops/depth of field markings.

Met or exceeded my high expectations

Sep 7, 2019

The image quality is excellent. It is small, light, and well balanced on A7 & A9 bodies. AF is accurate, fast and quiet. It focuses close. And an unanticipated bonus - in manual focus mode focusing is as precise and responsive as my manual-focus-only lenses like Loxia; unheard of with autofocus lenses put into manual focus mode. This lens is now my standard for street photography and casual food photography, replacing Sony-Zeiss 35mm f2.8, Zeiss Loxia 35mm f2, Zeiss Batis 40mm f2. But I miss the build quality of Loxia.

My New Favorite Lens

Sep 7, 2019

I am so happy with this lens. Its light and small. The focus is fast and creates sharp beautiful images. I was quite surprised how close you can focus as well. I can tell Ill be using this lens for the majority of my work. Im so happy Sony finally came out with an ergonomic 35mm lens that suits mirrorless bodies with a 1.8 aperture. Bravo!

Perfect size for my Sony A9

Dec 5, 2019

I'll sell my Batis 40mm for this lens. Batis 40mm produces beautiful image, however, the size is a bit large. This lens is sharp. AF speed is quiet and fast. If you love the size of FE28mm and FE55mm, then you'll love this FE35mm f1.8. Over all, I'm happy with this lens. It will be our family primary travel lens. Best, D.

Like it, But what's that loose shaking?

Sep 12, 2019

--Used the lens on a shoot and it worked without any issues, but when you take it off the camera the focusing element moves in and out when you flip it up or down (rattle loose feeling) --B&H said that it's normal and it's sony's new electromagnetic motor ? non of my other sony lenses do that so I hope it won't break soon

Perfect Size Great Performance!

Sep 4, 2019

I'm a professional event photographer and love documenting the day with a 35mm focal length. The Sony 35mm 1.8 is perfectly balanced on my a7III. Prior to this, I was using the Canon 35mm f2 with the Sigma MC-11 adaptor. This native Sony lens is a huge upgrade. Images are incredibly sharp even at 1.8. SMALL and powerful.

The perfect travel prime lens you have been looking for!

Mar 16, 2020

I have been looking for the perfect 35mm with Sony for years. The first Sony 35mm f1.4 was too big and heavy for the A7(r/s/iii) bodies, the Sigma 35mm f1.4 felt like a rehoused Sigma 35mm f1.4 for Canon with a Sony mount, but this one feel just right. It is light, fast, solid build quality, and the decently priced.

Finally a practical and excellent 35mm

Sep 7, 2019

Lightweight, small, sharp, super fast AF. Feels great to use and has a big enough aperture to produce professional results even in low light. Very happy to finally replace my overly heavy Sigma Art 35 which made my mirrorless front-heavy and unenjoyable to use especially on long 10-12 hour shoots. Worth every penny.

Very sharp. Fast focusing. Light weight.

Sep 24, 2019

I use the prime lens on my A7Riii. It is fast, light and it is just what I was hoping it to be. I was suprised at how sharp it is. Its sharper then 55mm F/1.8 Ziess. Great ultra fast and quiet lens offered by Sony. F/1.8 works extremely great in low light condition. Lightweight and well balanced on my A7Riii.

I have been waiting a long time for this lens. The 35mm focal length is my favorite and the 35mm f2.8 compact lens is a great little lens but I have wanted an f2 or 1.8. This lens is all I could ask for - sharp, light weight, reasonable size, close focusing and nice bokeh. It is worth the price to me.

Sharp and Quick Autofocus

We mainly film with our Sony A7iii and this f/1.8 lens is the right choice for our 35mm needs. It is not too heavy or bulky for our gimbal. Very happy with results. We also got the Hoya 55 Variable Density filter, if you don't have one I would highly recommend adding this.

Super disappointing and overpriced

Sep 2, 2019

I think this lens is worth more like $300. It doesn't work well with eye-af and hunts a lot in low light on my a73. Worst thing is the bokeh! So ugly and onion rings/cat eyes everywhere. Probably returning it as I'm just not happy with the performance.

Great lens to make you more apt to carry your camera. Small, great in low light and sharp. Love the focal length on A7III and a great focal length on my new APS-C 6600. Love that it has the familiar hold-focus button on lens that can be programmed.

This lens is a perfect pairing with the 55 f1.8 and the 85 f1.8 lenses. I think these three lenses are in the true spirit of the Sony cameras, keeping performance high while keeping weight and size down. This was my first attraction to mirrorless.
