Can't be beat in this price range.
I got the Sony A77II with 16-50 2.8 bundle to get me into the Sony A mount system. I wanted a telephoto zoom, but didn't have much left to spend on one. So I picked up this lens with a rebate that made it about half of what it normally sells for. I'm impressed! I've had it 3 weeks and it's been on a few outings. Image quality is darn good for an entry level lens, especially from 55-250mm. AF is slow in poor lighting, such as indoors, but look at ... Show More

Great Results - After Post Processing
I bought this to upgrade from the Sony 55-200mm kit lens (which is very sharp centrally wide open). This lens is only slightly longer and still slips into my Tamrac backpack with two other lenses. With the metal mount, it's a bit heavier and frankly balances a bit better on the A77 than did the 200mm zoom. A nice balance between portability and ruggedness too. Optically it's a bit softer at 300mm than the shorter lens at its maximum of 200mm but ... Show More

A very rewarding purchase...
I bought this lens from B&H in December together with my Sony SLT-A65 digital marvel (erh...camera)... Since Sony was offering a special Holidays promotion the price I paid was ridiculously low... but the optical quality of this lens is what surprised me the most... very sharp and clear images... the colors are well defined and chromatic aberration is almost non-existant in the test shots I took recently... This is a Sony DT lens design especiall... Show More

Great Sony Telephoto Lens, Up To 200mm
This Sony Telephoto Lens is ideal for the beginner to novice photographer It takes nice photo's and is priced right for the photographer who is interested in a budget lens. However, when zooming out to 200mm or better, the lens tends to distort and photo's turn out grainy when zooming beyond 200mm. I own a Sony Alpha A77 Mark II and the camera does a pretty good job with auto focusing on at distances beyond 200mm. However, when turning on Focus P... Show More

Great addition to the Sony line up!
I had the cheaper 55-200mm Sony zoom and wanted the extra 100mm reach. So far this lens has been a great upgrade. It does preform best in sunny bright conditions. For me it is very sharp at all focal lengths. Color is good. I never had a G lens but this lens will be good enough for me for everyday use. Also glad it has a metal mount vs the plastic on my 55-200. Weight is very good too. Actually weighs less than my 16-50mm 2.8! Focus does hunt some at higher focal lengths but tolerable. Manual focus is easy if needed and works well as a non macro close up lens.

Good bang for the buck
While this lens may not be the best for speed demons looking to photograph sporting events, it is extremely useful for nature shots. The 55-300 range provides a good coverage for photos ranging from short tele to long tele. Optically, the lens performs extremely well for the price, surpassing my expectations. The build quality is also extremely good: from afar, it would be hard to distinguish between this and Sony's premium 70-300G lens. A bit slow when autofocusing, but what can you expect for just $ dollars? Well worth the buy.

You get what you pay for.
I received the product and tested in on my A77 (original version). I wanted it to replace my old Minolta 100-300 AF lens (not an APO, let alone an APO D) The old lens (free with a $25.00 purchase of a Maxxum 7000i at a rumage sale) was much sharper than the new Sony 55-300. At the price, it is probably a good lens, but it is not the super sharp lens that some sites (not B and H) made it out to be. I am returning it.

Good value for the money
I realize that one could spend a lot more for a telephoto lens, but as an amateur trying my hand at nature photography this was enough. It is quiet, and I have been satisfied with the images. I looked at Tamron and Sigma, but felt more comfortable putting a Sony lens on my Sony A-65. I spent a lot of time on the phone with sales staff before making this purchase.

Good Lens
I use this lens only when I need it to get in closer than I can with my other lenses. The few times that i have used it it has performed well. As with all telephoto zoom work you should use a tripod for rock solid stability and clairty of image focus. I use this with the A77 and the in camera image stabilty works well with this lens even in hand held situations.

Sony DT 55-300mm Lens
This is a decent lens for the money. Sharp and consistent images. Not as quick in the auto focus as I like it to be. Quality is excellent as it has a nice weighted feel about the lens. I am happy with the results that this lens produces. Should be a recommended travel lens even at 300mm the focus is spot on.

An Update
The attached photo was taken in part sun at a wildlife park in the UK. I think it speaks for itself. 230mm, f7.1 at iso 200 handheld on an A77. RAW file was processed in Photoshop Elements 10 (no CA correction). The EVF on the A77 allowed me to get focus dead on without resorting to live view.

Sharp and versatile
Excellent value for money, can hunt for focus at times but pictures are sharp and over 85% are keepers. Took this on safari in South Africa and was extremely happy with the results. Cannot warrant paying 5 times or more for faster glass when I use it mostly outdoors.

Great lens for the money
Gives a great range and still crisp pics while zoomed in. The lens is a reasonable weight, not heavy and feels balanced. I previously owned the 55-200 and this is a nice upgrade as it gets me closer in for the wildlife and architectural photos I enjoy taking.

Great Lens!
Really nice step up from the 55-200. Very sharp, doesn't add too much extra weight and really gets me a lot closer to the action at my kids' soccer games. Add a Black Rapid sling strap and shooting a whole game is easy! Very pleased so far!

Nicely surprised by this lens!
Very happy with this lens! Shots are clear and crisp. It is a bit heavier than the 200mm but didn't take long to get used to it. I would recommend this lens! Great value for the money!

This lens produces Excellent sharp images. Focus hunting in low light is bit annoying but what can you expect more from a budget lens. Overall good experience.

I would not recommend this product.
The only good thing about this lens is the price but it's not a pro lens. It's not rugged, the focus is mediocre and so are the results in tough conditions.

I had a Tamron telephoto but it took forever to focus sometimes and my shots were often blurry. This one focuses faster and looks sharper.
