The Mighty Mirrorless (Even without 4K)

Sep 10, 2014

I had been looking at several DSLR-type cameras for a few months and I had the oppurtunity to shoot some sample video with 2 or 3 of them but I was unable to get my hands on the GH4. I had never used a M4/3 sensor before and I had concerns on how shallow the depth of focus would be.I was originally planning to wait until Photokina 2014 was over and all of the new cameras were announced, namely 7D mkII. But then, I watched 2 camera reviews. One by... Show More

Beautiful Video

Aug 21, 2014

I purchased this camera primarily for shooting company promotional videos. So far, it hasn't disappointed. The battery life is about twice that of my old Canon and even at 1080, the shots look great. This camera loves light. Going mirrorless was definitely the way to go. The electronic viewfinder is extremely clear and the fold-out touch screen makes focusing in manual mode extremely easy. Thoughtful details like a built-in audio levels meter, ac... Show More

Great all-around camera for insane price

May 13, 2014

This camera has almost no faults, as far as I'm concerned. Here's what I love about it: -4K is a great balance of image quality and file size. Sure, it's compressed but it doesn't really show. It grades really well. You don't have to invest in a brand new workflow to get a great 4K image. Even if you deliver in 1080p (and most of us will), the downscaled 4K is a treat.-Low light is pretty darn good. I've used the C100 and of course it can't match... Show More

I purchased this camera about last week and shot a short film with it right away! It is definitely a beast! First things first:Pros:I still have my beloved hacked GH2 but this little guy is definitely a game changer. The low light capability is not bad at all! The GH4 is my first DSLR. I am an aspiring film maker and an owner of a digital marketing agency and I needed a camera that would be good to learn cinematography . I have spent about $10k in equipment in the last 6 months and I will be spending another $10k-20k in the next year and I don't make any money from commercial photography as of now. Why am I saying this? Because at least $2-3k -could have gone to Panasonic and now they will see ZERO $ f... Show More

Noise...

Mar 18, 2015

I heard so many great things about this camera, did a ton of research, and had high hopes for it! I was sadly disappointed upon testing it. There are already many notable reviews explaining the pros of the camera, so I will focus on the things that personally killed it for me. Noise. Noise everywhere, all the time. Noise at 200 iso. Noise in shadows. Probably worse noise performance than my old T3i. I didn't do any thorough testing, but I was sho... Show More

Such a Powerful Tool

Jan 24, 2016

The Panasonic GH4 is really an amazing camera. I had done so much research on this camera before I bought it and I am very satisfied with my purchase. I am a professional videographer and use a Canon C100 at work, but I had never had my own personal camera. I decided to go with the GH4 because of the many video features that are offered for a very affordable price. I really like the focus peaking and zebras when shooting video. I really enjoy bei... Reflections from a filmmaker

May 9, 2015

This is a great camera. I'm a filmmaker and have mostly used recent generations of the Panasonic professional video camcorders. I wrestled with whether or not to by a hybrid video/still camera over a dedicated video camera. But in the end, decided that like many situations in life - it depends on what you want to do. The hybrid design is a tool to consider when you primarily want to be less obtrusive, carry a smaller at-the-ready video camera, ne... Show More

Worst customer service ever

May 27, 2016

I have owned my GH4 for about a couple months before I realized the micro-HDMI port was shipped to me broken. I had to pay 120 bucks to get it fixed (should be covered by Panasonic as it seems a lot of owners have this issue.) After 8 months of owning it the sensor frame moved in the interior (I never dropped or mishandled the body once). The process to get this fixed has been an incredible arduous and excruciating process. Panasonic explained th... Show More

Very impressive

Jun 8, 2014

I am primarily a pro filmmaker but also enjoy taking stills. I initially purchased the GH4 to take 4K video on the fly, and as a 3rd angle for shoots where the down sampled 4K to 1080 easily matched up with my Canon C300 and C100 cameras. I then started taking stills, and adding a Panasonic 12-35 and 35-100 Lumix X lenses, I have been blown away. This camera is really only good up to ISO 1600 in video, maybe 3200 in stills but 1600 is safer. I al... Show More

Great camera for video production!

May 13, 2014

I work in video production for TV, web and film delivery and the GH4 is better than most cameras out there for detail and low light performance. 1080p has a little aliasing so I use it mainly in 4k mode at 24p and then downsize to 1080p if needed. The 1080p mode has no artifacts except for more noise at 1080p EX Tele Converter mode. You loose more crop but then you gain artifact free no aliasing or moire 1080p video at up to 60p for nature and ot... Show More

Expensive For Me Now, But WORTH IT!!!

May 16, 2014

Since I'm retired (with a small income) and I no longer make money using my photo/video gear, the purchase of the Panasonic GH4 was more than a bit of a stretch for me - but I'm happy I bought it! I'm still an avid photographer and videographer, and I began to buy into the MFT format about a year and a half ago, mostly for weight/size/price reasons - but this gear is so much fun to use (and GOOD!) that I've shot about 40,000 still frames and some... I'm a videographer for a real estate agency and this was purchased for me to use on all of our home walk through videos and vendor partner interviews with the 18-35mm f2.8 and 7-14mm f4. It works great for the interviews but it's rather poor when used on the home walk through videos. I'm not going to talk about this as a photography camera. If you're buying it for that you're buying the wrong camera. The price point is great, but the 4k blew me aw... Show More

We bought 2 GH4 Cameras for Video in Classroom and Studio

We bought two of these things and they perform super. Some notes. One, unlike Nikon or Canon DSLR form factors which will shut down at about 29 minutes of shooting this is a true video camera that will shoot for about 2 hours on one Panasonic battery and one 64GB ultra high speed card (will not accept 128gb). This is with using a Zoom H5 audio capture device mounted on top with two XLR cables coming in from two RODE boom mics. While the camera wi... Show More

Amazing video camera

Nov 25, 2014

Wow, this is an amazing video camera. Here's what I love1) Internal cinema 4K. Really can't beat that at this price range.2) 96 fps slow motion (in 1080). The slow motion out of this camera is stunning.3) Pretty high bit rates. 100 mbps is not bad. Saves space but doesn't skimp too much on image quality. Plus it does 10-bit into an external recorder (8-bit internal) but I haven't tested that out yet.4) It's super easy to use. Menus make sense, th... Show More

I have owned 2 GH4's for about 2 1/2 years now. Primarily, I am an event/wedding videographer that, at the time, was looking for an alternative to the elderly Canon DSLR video line up. Fast forward to today, and the 4K video and 96 fps slow motion in 1080p are still great features at the price point. Headphone cable always gets in the way of the tilting LCD screen. The solution is so simple: swap the position of the headphone jack with the seldom-used (if ever) AV OUT port.
