I tour with a country band as their road manager and FOH engineer. At a show we were doing a fellow engineer told me about this mic. I purchased one to try out on our lead vocal then had each of the other singers try it out. After trying multiple mics over the last two years I have finally found what I was looking for. We just purchased three more for a total of four and I have all of my guys on them now. They are amazed with the improvement and a direct quote was I feel like my voice is alive now. The feedback rejection is killer and outside of one one of my vocalists I am only using a HPF on a well tuned system. I have one vocalist that I have to fight around 3.15k but I'm noticing that I am not fighting as hard as I was when we had him on a competitors mic. The only minor complaint I have is the proprietary clip that comes with the mic. I would purchase a couple of extras if you are using them frequently. This is very minor considering it is such a great sounding and tough as nails mic. Definitely worth the money! ... More

GREAT VOCAL MIC!!!. You get more than what you pay for. It really reproduces your your vocals in a clean realistic way. I use this to play live in my studio with my vocals, and acoustic guitar with my recorded tracks. After searching, buying, returning, exchanging, etc. I finally got a combo that works really well for me. I sing into a Telefunken M80 into the art TPS 2 preamp, into my Allen and Heath Zed60 ten effects,(bypassing it's preamp,by running the 1/4" line out of the ART into the Allen Heath and turning the preamp on the Allen and Heath all the way down). Into two Mackie MR8 mk3's. I had the JBL LSR 3's,but they were too muffled for that live sound I wanted. If you are just using this for recording, the choice in speakers is yours. I tried the Tannoys (great recording playback, too small for live), the JBLs,(also great recording playback, but somewhat muffled with the built in compressor, for live) neither one worked good for live playing, and the Mackies(who were suggested by G.C.) which surprised me with their crisp clear live, and recording playback sound. I am finally done, and really happy with everything I finally got. ... More

The ELA M80 has as beautiful low silky warmth to it. Hacking a vocal channel or graphic eq to ring out monitors is not necessary for the M80. Just a high pass of about 160-180hz. very small dip @ with a tight Q @ 250hz, and a wide 1 dip @ 3.15K is mostly what you need to start off with the M80. Sometime you may have to bring 6 or 8k down 2 0r 3dB due to the brightness of the mic. but still overall a great mic. Hands down beats any dynamic mic in sound, clarity, warmth & durability. Would even stack it against a few condenser mics. ... More

I am a Baritone/Tenor hybrid, and this mic is the best I have used for live performance. I use flat EQ on the board and rely on the response curve of the mic, as well as the shape control on a TC Helicon T1 To EQ my voice. I am absolutely thrilled with the noticeable improvement in clarity and definition over the EV N/DYM 767 or the Shure SM57/58. Of course, it costs over twice as much as these mics, but my voice is my meal ticket and this is worth every penny. Plus, the Telefunken M80 is superior to any other dynamic mic I have used at ANY price. It gives me the Hi-Fi qualities of a condenser mic with the Great durability and feedback rejection of a dynamic mic. Buying the gold-plated version was a bit of an indulgence on my part, but it looks gorgeous! ... More

I purchased this microphone and used it for the first time at open mic. I must say I was very impressed with the overall performance. I used it on a full band who was a female vocalist and sounded full and clear sounding with very little EQ required. I also used it on one male singer/songwriters that night. Again very little EQ required except this mic will suffer from the plosives which I was able to removed most of it out. I used my Presonus RM16 spectrograph to better locate at what frequency and just used the HPF.

Pros: Incredible noise rejection, solid build quality, great sound. Cons: Price. It's true that you get what you pay for. This mic is top quality all around. In my opinion, it wont replace a 57, but it definitely adds versatility to the studio arsenal. The mic is great for scratch vocals and snare drum, but its best application seems to be for live vocals. One other thing to point out which some people may find to be a Con is the weight. This mic is heavy (for what it is). I actually find that to be a pro, but others may not. All in all, its a fantastic mic and while its expensive, the pros definitely outweigh that con. ... More

If I had my choice, I would use all DPA vocal mics, but using $1000 vocal mics on eveeryday shows is impractical. I bought one M80 a couple years back to play with , and it is far superior to an SM or B58 in the monitors and at FOH. I am all d&b so I'm working with top shelf products and I notice a big difference in this mic. It's built like a tank. After 35 years, almost every national still requests SM58 , but I have made the M80 my personal use mics, and anyone I put it in front of loves it. The SM58 is so engrained into peoples minds that many hesitate to try something new, but they are always thrilled with the quality after giving in. ... More

This mic is literally the best mic I have EVER used on stage. It has the ability to make bad PA systems and bad speakers sound amazing. This mic is a MUST have if you sing live. This mix has also been amazing in the studio when I mic snare drums. The frequency response is superior to any other mic I've used.

some say this microphone is overpriced. I have compared this mic with the 150, 200, and 250 dollar microphones which I own. the is no way this microphone is overpriced. if you like working with the shure sm58 , you will fall in love with the m80

This mic is awesome. I bought the module for my wife's wierless. It sounded so incredibly good I bought this hand held for myself.

Very clear sounding Mic! It was so clear that we were able to fine tune the live vocal reverb at band practice. It also has a nice design and a good weight to it. It feels great in the hand. It has a wide spectrum so you do not necessarily have to position it right in front of your mouth for good results. Overall I am very impressed. If you are looking for a live vocal mic upgrade look no further.

You'll probably want to toss your 58s in the trash after you get this. Very clear, and almost zero proximity effect. That's a good thing. Not boomy when close in. Course for the price of two of these you can buy 5 SM58s, but who in the world wants 5 mediocre mics? These mics are well built, sound great, and just overall stomp the "standard". I'd put this mic against Shure's flagship stage condenser, the SM87. Considering this is a dynamic mic, that's saying something. Same price too. Sometimes you can catch the Tele on sale. I did. ... Awesome microphone that requires very little EQ to sound great. Less feedback than more common microphones used on stage. Only negative is the sensitivity to popping.

I've used the SM58 for years and decided it was time for an upgrade after doing a show where my vocals just didn't cut through. The clarity of the M80 is far superior to the SM58 and it feels like it is built rock solid. I'm still getting used to the nuances of this mic during live performances, but haven't had any issues with the change. I've read lots of reviews that these are great for recording, etc but I haven't used it for that so I cannot comment.

This mic sounds like a condenser that you've already eq'ed to optimize your lead vocal in a mix. Really nice, bright but not ear-piercing, tight controlled lows. Great background rejection. Sturdy enough for live performance but works great for vocal recording too, especially in a less-than-perfect room.

As a professional audio engineer, this is the most natural sounding dynamic handheld mic I have heard. A little bit of handling noise, and susceptible to plosives, but nothing a mic stand and windscreen can't fix.

Absolutely best sounding vocal mic out there. There's something magical about the proximity effect of this mic. No matter what position you hit it with, it sounds level and even almost like it's got some mild compression in the mix and also the clarity is amazing.

Used in studio for live recorded sessions where bleed is the enemy, this has great rejection and the reduced proximity effect allows vocalists to get right on the microphone
