I did a lot of research on this lens and my experience with it since purchasing it has matched all the great reviews it has. I also bought this as an open box, which worried me but it was in perfect working order. I've very happy with my purchase.

Fantastically sharp! Amazing lens!
Can't say great enough things about this Sony Zeiss lens. Just to add to the other reviews here. It's a tack sharp lens. Amazing in low light. Prior to purchasing this lens from B&H, I rented it along with the Sony 50mm f/1.4 because I wasn't sure which one would suite my needs better. I ended up buying the 55mm because I found it to be (1) just as sharp (2) much cheaper (under $1K), and (3) much lighter to use! Using it with a Sony A7sii, the 55mm f/1.8 stop gives me all the brightness I need in low light.

Sharpest lens, super fast, and a joy to shoot with
I recently switched over to a Sony A7ii with the desire to have a smaller camera that I could take with me everywhere and pair it with a nifty fifty. I tried this lens out along with the Zeiss Loxia 50mm Planar. Truly sharp!!!
All I can say is that this lens is very,very, sharp. True Zeiss colors and lens size is adequate for a7 series FF cameras. Bokeh is very good and subject will pop. Autofocus is fast and I am really happy with this lens.

A must have great lens
This is the lens I take with me at all times, I have even dropped in water and it still worked, ( Not suggested). It is very sharp and controls flares well. The size is not as small as I would like but its not a big lens. So it travels well.

Sharp and bright, with great bokeh rendering.
I finally purchased this firecracker of a lens' as so many reviewers put it. And it is just that. The lens is as sharp as you can hope for when used correctly. It is pretty bring for an f1.8. It's got a great feel and build, and is also nice and small. It fits the mirrorless kit to the tee. When you compare its price and SIZE to Sony's new G Master 50mm f1.4, you will be astounded. I didn't buy this lens from B&H since I'm not in the USA. I have been in confusion, a 50 ish mm lens with 1.8 aperture for just under $1000, the previous price, then I was like WHAAAAT???. Incredibly sharp
I bought this lens and a a7r2 and all I can say is wow. Sharp, fast, and beautiful. Autofocus is also very fast and accurate. Eye af and this lens has produced some incredible portraits. Very happy with this combo it's a keeper.

Crazy sharp!
I've had the vivitar 28-90 f2.8 manual lens with my A7 for 6 months. I thought that lens was ok for my hobby needs. But when I got my 55mm, I was blown away with how sharp f1.8 was. Stop down to f4 to f8 and it will produce killer sharp images.

overall good lense
Very sharp and fast lens. Works great with my a7rii. My only complaint is the flaring. It seems to flare way more than my canon lenses. Not only that but the flaring doesn't look as good as the flaring on the canon lense either

Love this Lens
I wanted a lens to use on my A7 for photographing the arrival of our first grand child . I've never been happy with my people photos and avoided those opportunities constantly. I realized I wanted to confront my fears and start practicing portraits quick! Excellent optically, but mechanically flawed
I have been using this lens for over 2 years and it has been my favorite and best,'go to'mirrorless lens on FF (Sony A7R and A7R-II)and APS-C (A6000). With the latter, it's a very good 85mm equivalent tele. Very sharp at all apertures with just some vignetting wide-open. So why only 2 stars and me about to sell it? A True Diamond
Got it as a first lens with my a7RII. This lens is super sharp and can't really find any softness or CA even when pixel peeping the corners. I recently got the zeiss 35mm 2.8 and it seemed soft compared to this lens. I thought there was something wrong with the 35 but it's just that this 55 lens is razor sharp. Really satisfied. Focuses fast and accurately too.

Great lens! A perfect combo with an a7Rii. So dependable, with fast focus, great color and sharpness, and well-balanced on the camera. I don't think of what I have to overcome in order to get a great image with this lens so am able to just shoot and concentrate on the composition, lighting and timing instead. Awesome lens!
This lens is a superb lens to walk about on my Sony A7. Sharp, sharp, sharp. The bokeh is delicious, creamy, buttery. It is light weight and compact. There are times I forgot there was a camera on my neck, and thought it was left behind.

Tack Sharp Lens with Carl Zeiss Perfection!
Portraits, action, street photography. This lens does it all. And with finesse. This is probably the best lens I have ever purchased, as a hobbyist photographer. It has metal mounts and body, and is solid construction with quiet operation. I was wowed by its tack sharpness and fast auto focus. The bokeh is nice and creamy. Not much else to be said! Fantastic lens by storied Carl Zeiss optics. Buy it and see for yourself!

This is the sharpest lens with the most beautiful bokeh
I don't need to repeat what the other reviewers are saying. Besides the sharpness, the bokeh, color and separation are outrageous. I compared 3 lenses, Sony 28-70mm, Canon 24-70mm with Metabone with photos taken at 55mm and the result was jaw dropping. Sharp, small, fast
Yeah, it's $1k. Yeah, it's only f/1.8. But guess what? This is the sharpest 50ish mm lens with autofocus: IN THE WORLD. Small price to pay, don't you think? I use it on an A7R II, and this lens combined with the f/1.8 aperture allow me take hand-held photos in extremely low light.
