One of the best 50mm's but about 20% too big and expensive

Aug 30, 2016

This new Sony lens in impressively sharp in the center, and really sharp in the corners as its should for its price tag. Interestingly it was released at the same time as Rokinons first autofocusing lens, also a 50mm 1.4 for the E mount thats less than half the price. I ordered both of them to see how they compare and if this Sonys price tag is worth it. Starting off with the exterior the lens is huge compared to other 50mm 1.4s. This is one of m... Show More

A must have in your bag.

This lens is right up there with the 85mm GM, I totally loved it. A must have in your bag for portraits. Fast focus and sharp, the images speak for themselves.

GREAT LENS! BUT a bit too heavy and big...

Aug 23, 2016

The Sony Zeiss 50mm F 1.4 Planar is a superior lens. It gives you GREAT detail in image quality and even when wide open at 1.4 it is SUPER sharp! The click less aperture control is superb when it comes to shooting video. HOWEVER there is always a flaw in any product and for this one in particular that was the weight and size of the lens itself. I was severely disappointed in the fact that the engineers from Sony/ Zeiss put into account the size w... Show More

Fantastic 50

Aug 17, 2016

I guess I was one of the first ones who jumped on this lens. My experience with the lens has been wonderful. As one of the reviewers said, it reminds me of Summilux 50mm f/1.4. The image quality of the lens such as color, contrast, and bokeh is second to none. It is definitely heavy, but it never diminishes its quality. The lens feels much like Zeiss FE 35mm f/1.4 in handling and weight. However, the image quality is a bit better than the 35mm in... Show More

Absolutely the best 50mm I have shot with

Aug 12, 2016

When I got into the Sony mirrorless game, I quickly purchased the 55mm 1.8 which is such a nice compact and sharp lens. After using this 50mm and comparing it my 55mm imagine how much more sharper and just beautiful results I received. Yes its, $500 more than the 55mm but trust me when I say, its completely worth It and even more! If any of you guys have shot with the Zeiss Otus line of lens' you would know that those are the best in the game....... Show More

Zeiss has a winner

Aug 12, 2016

I'm normally a Leica user, but I have an A7RII as my backup camera. I usually use an adapter to put my Leica glass on the Sony, but I wanted to give this lens a try as my sole autofocus lens for those times when I don't have the time to autofocus. I've been impressed by this lens. It is every bit as much or not more sharp than the Leica lenses on this camera. It has amazing contrast and colors. It has some real character that the very clinical hi... Show More

If you've been looking for a 50mm, this is your lens.

Aug 6, 2016

Incredibly sharp corner to corner, super smooth bokeh, great flare control, and autofocus when paired with the A7rII is very fast. I absolutely love the aperture ring and de-clicking switch too. The only downside is the size and weight of the lens. It's a little big for a mirrorless camera, but that should honestly be the last of your concerns. Yes, it's expensive, and cheaper options do exist, but you can't go wrong. I found my new favorite lens, despite the mass collection of glass I already own.

what a fantastic lens!

Aug 1, 2016

I sold a mitakon 50 f0.95 and a handful of other lenses to help finance this. I was sold after a few test shots on my a7s. Great microcontrast, great color, this lens has no flaws. So what if its bigger than most 50's? go lift some weights. this thing isn't bad at all in terms of size and build. It really is a special kinda lens.
