It's not as bad as some say...
When I read online reviews on this lens I was a bit apprehensive about buying it due to the slow and noisy focusing. Well I tried one B&H at and I did not find any of these issues to be as glaring as others think. Is it a sports lens? Hell no! Is it noisy? Not to me. Is it sharp? Extremely. Does it focus quickly? More than quick enough for me. I shot many pictures in low light (1/125 @f1.8, ISO 8000) and I missed focus just once. Again, not sport... Show More

Nifty Fifty
I read the reviews and cons about the lens prior to purchasing. However, I haven't experience any of the negative reports on it. Great lens, tack sharp and very fast with the AF. Feather weight, so it a stay in my bag.

Good value for money. A sharp fast prime portrait lens.
We bought this lens for two reasons. I mainly shoot indoors, sometimes in the dark and I wanted a faster lens than the APS-C format 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 power zoom lens that came originally with our Sony NEX VG900 video camera. My partner also wanted a portrait lens. So after a bit of research we decided we'd give this full frame lens a try. So far we are happy with the lens but we do find it difficult to focus close-ups as it has quite a narrow de... Show More

Worth the Price
I read countless reviews and saw many YouTube videos on the negatives of this lens but after purchasing it I'm glad I did. I don't know if it's the camera I have which is a A7R2 but the focus is fast and sharp. I don't need to do a comprehensive review but I did a real life one and definitely recommend this lens as a good walk around portrait lens.

Really happy with the sharpness of this lens
I was looking for a wide aperture lens that i could afford and came upon this one with a 1.8 aperture. The 1.4 is almost double! So far i am very happy with it. It's sharp, feels solid in my hand and i like the quality of the colors. I would highly recommend.

Great cheap lense for manual focus
AF is loud and a bit slow, but I use only MF. It's great lense for such a low price. f/1.8 blurs background perfectly.

Great Lens for this price
Has aspherical element, sharp. Slow but it's not problem for nature or portrait shooting also good for studio.

Auto-focus not reliable
Bought it about 2 months ago and used it in a few pro situations. AF hunts in and out for stills and is uselessly slow for video. I updated firmware and found no difference. AF not reliable for pro shoot. Was gonna return it, I got lazy and the 30 days were up. I'll use it as manual lens. Pics are very clean in manual and lens is feather light. But this should not be called an auto-focus lens.

Unacceptable for the price.
The autofocus is so slow it's laughable. I'm serious...I didn't know what else to do but laugh about how horrible it is. This lens shouldn't even be available, it's almost unusable.

A very nice modern fast 50
This is a nice, sharp, light, fast 50 with quick, native FE mount, autofocus. It's cheap and VERY good. This is NOT the ultimate bokeh smoothie; bokeh are smooth enough, but show onion rings. It also has a rather huge hood and the build involves a lot of plastic. So what? The bang for the buck is excellent. In sum, this is the fully modern version of the cheapie kit normal lens from the days of film SLRs. It isn't the best, but it is darn good, pretty versatile, and cheap enough that everybody should have one. This is really the lens that should come bundled with all the A7 series cameras.

This lens shouldn't have ever been released
I dont know why Sony released this lens. The image quality is fine but the AF is HORRIBLE. So slow and noisy. It reminds me of the original Canon 50mm 1.8 which I never complained about because when i bought that it was only $75. This is way over priced and should only be purchased if you are on a super tight budget

An excellent, not perfect, fast 50 at a great price
Let's start with the good. This is a fairly compact, shockingly lightweight, fast 50mm lens that can cover full frame and resolves well enough for 24MP APS-C pixel density even wide open. Color, microcontrast, and flare resistance (even without the excellent hood) are all very good, and it focuses fast on the Sony E bodies that have PDAF such as my A6000 and A7RII. Image quality is well above its very modest price, as is handling -- the build see... Show More

This lens is a must have for your bag tack sharp from 2.8 up compact, well built, and great bokah. More than what you would expect from a 200.00 lens

Good but not as fast as I thought
This lens has a really good bokeh but the focus is not as fast as I would like for taking pictures of the kids but for others purposes, it is really good.

Great lens for the price
For the price this product is unmatched. Obviously Zeiss is the better choice but this lens does the trick.

Nifty Fifty!
Slapped this on my Sony a7sii and it is great. Such an awesome little nifty fifty! Great Fstop at 1.8, crisp and sharp at higher fstops, really impressed.

Be sure to update the firmware...Good lens afterwards...
Camera: Sony a6500 I knew prior to purchasing that the latest firmware significantly improved performance. I can validate this claim as the received lens (date: 02/03/17) had firmware version 01 and its out-of-the-box autofocus was downright atrocious in low light situations especially when using smaller apertures. The following comments and overall rating are based on firmware 02 (which installed effortlessly): Autofocus significantly improved p... Show More

I would definitely buy again.
My A7 is currently my backup system. I rely on old high quality Hexanon MF lenses for landscape pix. I added the Sony 50mm f1.8 lens after reading the reviews. IQ of the Sony lens is excellent, but the lens is a little noisy. There is actually a slight clunking sensation as the lens stops in AF mode. Nonetheless, considering the low price, the AF and the nice image quality, I am quite pleased. I also plan to upgrade the firmware.

Cheap prime option
I have the sel50f18. It is a fabulous lens and great to even do manual focus. Compared to the build quality is cheaper and I guess that explains the price difference. I bought this as a gift for someone. There is definitely a Motor noise as it tries to focus. The speed is better with the new firmware. It is a cheap option and worth it's price. The pictures are great but the sharpness, I find gets better around 2.8. Wide open it is not as good.

Pretty great for the sale price of $198.99.
For the price the lens is fairly sharp. It compares to it's higher end much more expense 50mm zeiss counterpart to a point. For the price you have to deal with a much slower auto focus and tiny bit of chromatic aberration. As a side note this is my first electronic controlled focus ring on a DSLR. After reading reviews on many similar lens I was worried this lens would not be as responsive as needed however after using this lens those worries hav... Show More

Firmware Version 02 Addresses Focusing Woes; Good Optics
The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 gives the first-time, full-frame mirrorless user a clearer picture (no pun intended) of what his a7-series camera can achieve. The lens allows astounding light transmission (T-stop) of T1.8, matching its advertised F-stop; rival lenses like the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G has a transmission rating of T2.0. Additionally, sharpness is superior to comparable Canon and Nikon nifty fifties; many details are retained in the images even at... Show More
