I purchased my camera for video. I really wanted low-light performance so I opted for this lens. Since I'm new to DSLRs I may have a bit to learn about low light photography. This lens is definitely not as good as my eyesight, but with a nearby light source it looks really good. Love the depth of field for sure. So nice!

Nothing to add...

Feb 12, 2012

to previous reviews. Plastic mount is a concern but at 2 bills the overall IQ is outstanding. Got this to shoot pics and videos inside...which it does well. Motor not silent but with Final Cut Pro it is all but gone. This makes a great addition to my collection of lenses for my a65. I really don't think you can go wrong.

Good upgrade from kit lens

Feb 23, 2012

Very sharp on A100. Much better than 18-70 kit zoom. Construction is all plastic, but it feels solid. SAM focus motor is quieter than kit zoom with screw drive focus - probably not much faster though. Highly recommended, great value. Lens hood is nice, and I like that you can store it on the lens by reversing it.

You can't go wrong.

I am new to dslr photography and read more reviews than was necessary before I purchased this lens. I couldn't be more pleased and I was amazed by the sharpness of the photo and its versatility. Friends have commented that the photos look as if they were taken with a lens that costs hundreds or hundreds more.

Good for portrait or street photography Resolution-wise it delivers a very solid performance, nice Bokeh Max. aperture suitable for low-light situations The build quality of the lens is not the best The lens barrel is completely made of plastic including the lens mount Slightly wobbly For APS-C sized sensor

Great Prime Lens for the Money

Jun 22, 2011

This is a must have for a walk around prime lens. I have captured some amazing photos with this lens. The price is low enough it should make it into everyone's bag as an easy prime to shoot just about anything. Sure its not a Zeiss lens, but at under $200 its the perfect add on without breaking the bank.

Bought a new lens for my Sony a65

May 23, 2012

I had read good things about this inexpensive lens, so bought one a few weeks ago. It is not built like a tank, but it operates smoothly and the image quality is excellent. I will continue to use it as a normal lens when I want to travel light and inconspicuous. It is well worth the price in my opinion.

Great bang for my buck

Mar 3, 2011

I use this lens on my tow Alphas (a700 and a200). It's a great, lightweight lens with a nice 'normal' focal length, plus a fast f/1.8 aperture. The plastic mount and overall build dosen't look or feel too sturdy, but it's really compact and VERY lighweight, with very good image quality to boot.

Excellent for portraits in low light

Jul 24, 2011

This fast/bright lens lets you shoot nice indoor portraits with blurred background and handheld shooting in low light. Although externally its building quality is not superb, the lens itself seems to be of excellent quality. Autofocus runs fast and smoothly enough. Great value overall.

At last, I made a smart buy!

Apr 28, 2016

I recently bought this 35mm lens, which has a 35mm equivalent of about 52mm, for my Sony. I have not had a lens like this since my first camera, which was an Olympus OM-2. I am so glad I decided buy something besides a zoom lens. And I must say, B & H was a great business to deal with.

I used this lens for some walk around shots. The results are great. Very sharp in focus and a excellent bokeh. Will use this lens for concert fotography next week but I am already sure to get good results. Alltough its made of plastic its a really good product for a sensational price.

Awesome Lens

Nov 27, 2012

This is a wonderful lens for the money I mostly use it for night shots like night sky and other projects, like others have stated it is made out of plastic but I can't complain, it seems solid enough and the fast apeture is very useful and sharp across the range. CA can be a problem!

Excellent Value

May 24, 2015

Use this as a walk around lens on an A77II. Signifcantly sharper than my Tamron 28-75/2.8 at 35 mm. As most others have noted, the mount is plastic, but that hasn't been an issue as of yet. First copy had de-centered focus issues, but the replacement behaves exactly as expected.

Great Bang for the Buck!

Feb 16, 2011

Sharp, lightweight and compact. Just what I wanted. I won't comment directly about the level of sharpness, the quality of the bokeh etc as that is too subjective. The plastic mount doesn't bother me at all. It stands up to REGULAR usage and that is all that matters to me.

I use this lens on my A700 for about two weeks now and I love it. It very sharp lens wide open which I need since I don't like using flash on my newly born grandaugther. Yes the construction is plastic but so what, if you take care of it, it will take care of you.

I have a Sony a580 and have been shooting at a maximum f/3.5 for the past 2 years. Why haven't I purchased this lens sooner?!?!?! Gorgeous, sharp images with smooth, creamy bokeh. I am utterly in love with it and don't see it leaving my camera body any time soon!!

Great Value

Jan 23, 2012

I use this on (of course) a crop sensor body. It means I can stand at a more comfortable distance than with my old Minolta 50mm 1.7 Lens sharpness is good and due to the modern construction, the lens is nice and light. Great for a walkaround lens.

Very nice lens for the price

Jul 16, 2013

This lens is fantastic at this price point. Works great in low light and the 50mm equivalent (for standard SLR) works well for natural light portraits as well as landscapes. It is also light weight and compact. An all around great performer.

Cannot bet the price for what you get

Mar 7, 2012

I go to a lot of parties where a flash would be distracting. This lens filled the bill for candid shots of my friends. When used under good lighting is one of my sharpest lenses in the bag. For the price you just can't go wrong.

Glad I bought this lens

Jun 3, 2013

I wondered why I was having trouble getting the sharpness I want out of the kit zoom for my Sony a65. This lens is much more sharp and better exposures. Just have to adjust to no zoom, but that's why cropping was invented...

Adapted to my NEX-7

Mar 18, 2012

This seems to be a very sharp lens. Used with an adapter on my NEX-7 it is yielding very good pictures, albeit, focussed manually. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is I can't judge how well it focuses in automatic.
