Quality vs Price
For the price of this camera it is a solid value. The image quality is average at best and becomes noisy very fast. The monitor is absolutely terrible and a disgrace. The top handle is a blessing and the two balanced XLR inputs are fantastic. You will get some fan noise but it should be fairly easy to remove with the right audio denoising software.

do not buy this camcorder
I previously own a jvc gy 150u and I really like it, it was my first pro camera, I bought the hm170 thinking I'll get the same results, but unfortunately the image is a disaster, I wasn't expecting good image on low light situations but at least better than the five year old camera, under dj lights can't handle purples or reds, the sound specially in the mixer is good but destroy by a terrible image, returning this camera

Very nice camera
This is my main camera for a client for whom I do white board videos. It's part of a traveling package I can carry in a backpack anywhere in the world. Used it on a trip this week. Very VERY happy.

Total bust
We were very unhappy with this camera, and we returned it. First of all, it has a light, plastic feeling. More crucially, though, the sound and color balance were incredibly off when using the auto settings. The color was a strange blueish, sallow tint (as soon as you took it off the auto setting it popped to a deep, warm reddish tint--too far in the other direction). Of course that can be changed through manual settings, but having the auto sett... Show More

So far, I like it.
For concert recording in a concert hall - I have to record from 49 feet away, and the lower lighting images are OK, not great, I stepped up 3DB of gain without any problems and I thought the image I have was amazing, from first impressions and being 49 feet away. I bought an IKAN VL-35 to monitor with - as the monitor on this camera is not the most accurate, but it is what it is, for a camcorder...

Good Camera for price
Verything about this camera is great except the slow focusing when on automatic. I have owned many cameras and this camera (I have also owned the HM200 from JVC) and the HM200 both have a very slow focusing mechanism and slow tracking of fast moving objects. For instance, when following a fast car in autop focus mode, the car, once in a while, will go out of focus. This has ruined 20-30 shots for me... I film extreme sports so I film fast action ... Impressive for the price, but with some problems
This is an amazing camcorder with many professional option for shooting. Especially for the price, it has many features that twenty years ago only $20k to $60k camcorders had and then some technology like HD and 4k which you just couldn't get unless you were extremely rich or in the military. With all that said, I'm still not feeling the wow factor of someone who had worked with 35mm in the past and am still looking for that kind of look. So the ... Show More

After Filling a Few 64 GB Cards My Thoughts as a Shooter
Cons: -Headphone Jack is not its own port. One plastic cover for three ports isn't good. -The audio controls are not easy to adjust on the fly. -The camera feels cheap, compared to say a canon xa-35 -The menu access list is very basic and takes a few times to remember there they hide settings you want to change. -Doesn't feel like a good camera for run-and-gun shoots, mostly because of how it;s all a light plastic. You can hear lots of noise thro... Show More

Amazing on paper! But...
I purchased this lovely little 4K JVC camera with high hopes.. I mean how can you go wrong? Tons of manual controls.. all the pro connections you could want.. Great codecs and records to SD cards.. and just under $1,300!! on paper that looks amazing! I thought so too! so I bought it! It didn't take me long to find out how unimpressive this little camera is.. first off.. it looks great! way better than it's competitors in this price bracket.. and ... Show More

Low priced 4K for a reason
I bought two of these cameras for an upcoming shoot because they were on sale during Black Friday. I was pretty excited and figured that maybe the low light problem was just folks overly complaining... They were not. This camera is just unusable in low light conditions due to its very small chip sensor. I've never seen so much grain in my work and this is after messing with several of the setting, including shutter speed and gain levels. I really... Show More

The best camcorder in its price range, barring a few caveats
I come from an ENG/EFP background, and have long preferred the camcorder form factor over that of still cameras such as DSLRs and DSLMs. Despite the shallow depth of field fad, I was in the market for a new camcorder, and when I stumbled upon the JVC GY-HM170UA, I knew I had found the one. For the price, JVC simply gives you so much camera here. This is a global camera by the way, as you have both NTSC and PAL recording options on MOST recording ... Show More

Really wanted to like this camera
I really wanted to like this camera. The size, design, & price were exactly what I were looking for. Unfortunately it does not produce great image quality in sub par lighting. Combined with the worse then average light drop off when zooming, the pictures it produces are unusable. If your using this camera in a studio environment or well lit one its a great little camera. Unfortunately for me I do not so it will be returned.

Very capable camera
This is a really nice little camcorder. The thing is, you have to really know what you're doing. If you just shoot with it right out of box on full auto the picture is sort of family snapshot quality. But I found a video on YouTube where someone tweaked the color settings of their jvc 600 to be more cinematic. I used these settings on the hm170. Wow, big difference. Still need to practice shooting all manual. With every video session, I noticed t... Show More

Terrible low light, poor LCD, poor quality switches
I've been shooting video for 30+ years using Canon and Sony equipment. I saw this on sale and tried it. I tested this over the weekend on 4 different events and was not happy with the performance on any of them! First was a night indoor shoot. The room was well lit but even with the iris fully opened the video was too dark and adding any gain produced unusable video because of noise. Second was an outdoor high school event. No Battery Charger?
I am a still photographer by trade but have a regular client that needs both stills and b-roll video with voice over audio. I had been shooting video with my DSLR but thought it was time to invest in an entry level video camera, primarily for the zoom and follow focus functions. This camera has worked well in that regard, and the image quality is comparable to my DSLR's (Nikon D810 and D800). I was unable to import 4K files into the latest versio... Show More

Great quality for a better value
We've been using this prosumer camera for streaming and recording our church services. Our church is not that big, seats a little over 200 and the camera is in the back of the room, about 40-50 feet away from the stage. It's not the sharpest image, but it works good enough for us, especially at the sale price we purchased it at (under $1300). Good Buy
I have been using this JVC cam for 3 months now. It took a little getting use to, but I like it. I do wedding videography and legal depositions with it. It is good for both. I dropped it once at a wedding and it held up without a problem. It's not great in low-light, but I can add 6dbs and 9dbs gain and it doesn't hurt the footage at 50mbs/QT .Mov. The fact is you have to use a fill light regardless if you are a pro, so be ready for it. I've even gotten use to the tiny-audio controls on the handle after a few months. The audio with the free mic is very good. For the price you can't beat this.

Good for the price
When you have enough light and a fixed subject the camera is great. However in low light it struggles a bit, and if your subject is moving the focus system is not able to keep up. The XLR inputs are a nice upgrade and it's a nice and light so it's easy to cary around for a while.

Lightweight with Big Strength
This camera is very light weight and produces some nice 4K images. I would look at purchasing the upgraded version of this camera (GY-HM200U) if you are going to be using this as your primary camera. Overall, the camera feels cheap due to its weight, but produces the quality you expect of 4K video.

Works great for my Broadcast news students.
I have 4 of these and 2 HM-150's to teach video production in a high school. They have great audio quality and very simple controls. Not as rugged as the Canon Gl-1's that we used to have, but good camera for the money. I liked the built-in lens cap that the HM-150's had so the caps don't get lost. And I love that they record .mov for editing in Final Cut.
