zmusically honest and revealing headphones

Coming from the point of view of a professional symphony musician and ex-recording engineer (1960s), I find the Tascam TH-07 headphones to be a lot more musically honest (and revealing...in a good way) than all of the stupidly expensive other closed back headphones I own or have auditioned. No, they do not really reach the incredible accuracy and honesty of the new Neumann NDH-20 $500 headphones, which I have found to be far superior to any headphone or active nearfield monitor I have heard (other than the amazing Neumann 120 active nearfields)...but they come surprisingly close. Considering the rather (in comparison) low price of $99.99, if I had to pick another headphone to study scores, write recording reviews, and evaluate my own recorded performances, I could definitely trust what these cans reproduce. While they slightly sin in the same way as other prosumer mass marketed headphones by adding an unnatural zing to everything (to give a sonically hyped presentation that does not organically exist in live acoustical music), I can still rely on them to provide some of the very low level details I hear everyday in my work as a musician. What they do so well, is truthfully reproduce the harmonic colors of instruments and voices, and at the same time, reveal how much energy the performers at the recording session expended to play their instruments or sing. While audiophiles (I used to review high end gear for specialty audiophilemagazines) are looking for soundstage, bass slam, midrange clarity and high end air (whatever that means), they typically only focus on the sonic aspects of what the headphone, speaker or other component produces that makes the listening sonically exciting. But live music is really not sonically exciting...it is emotionally and musically exciting. Thats where the audio gurus go so terribly wrong. In my opinion, any truly honest audio component should not be spectacular or exciting on its own. It should serve as an impartial messenger of the musically exciting message. If you dont know what live music sounds like, then how will you know when it is accurately reproduced? (Hello Audiophiles!) Great mid-priced Studio Headphones

I have had some halfway decent, and some very decent studio headphones in my life, but these are by far the best when it comes to realistic sound quality. The most recent pair I had were sound-isolating, and had a decent sound, but the bass (which the company touted as one of its best features) was too overpowering to use when mixing down my DAW recordings. These however, while having a good amount of bass, are more balanced, and therefore, much more accurate for mixing. To me, having the ability to mix down with headphones is vital. And the two different types of cords that are included make these headphones worth the price alone. I purchased two pairs, one for listening to music and watching TV through my PC from my bed, using an extension cord connected to the already decent 8.5-foot straight cord, and the other connected to my audio interface with the shorter coiled cord while I am working in my DAW with my two keyboards & condenser mic. The only issue I have with these headphones, and it's a HUGE one, is the fact that while I admittedly have a small head, these headphones begin at a size that would only fit someone with a head the size of Herman Munster's. And like all other studio headphones, they can be extended even further. So, they are very difficult to keep on my head without falling off, and which also makes them a bit uncomfortable. And while the padding on the cups is fantastic, the padding on the headband could use a little more. But other than that, I couldn't be happier with these headphones. I have been paying in the $50 price range for the past few pairs I have purchased, but I definitely believe I got my money's worth paying a little more for these great-sounding Tascam's. ... More

Very good sound - this headphone seems accurate and open. (I am a professional musician and because I bought the headphones for recording work, this is a critical point.) I like the idea of the removable cable but it sticks down a bit more than I'd prefer because it bumps into one's shoulder at times. Plus, I am concerned that the cable will be a bother to replace if it ever becomes necessary to do given that is apparently specially designed for these headphones. (A standard plug probably won't fit or stay in. I have not attempted that yet.) They are a bit heavy, the head band is slightly longer than I think is necessary (I must wear them at an angle to fit my head), and the ear cups are rather large so I don't imagine wearing them for extended time periods will be a fun experience. But this could be a blessing since one ought not listen through headphones for long periods, anyway, for the sake of one's hearing! (smile) The construction seems quite solid but I hope the right ear's cable (which runs through the head band) will be up to long wear. I prefer the size / weight / shape of the Sony MDR-7506 phones which I own but the TH-07's sound seems a bit more open and the right ear cable on the Sony phones has broken on two pairs. Pretty much knocked over by these headphones. I cant believe the price! Mids and highs are clear and present, bass is accurate, tight, and without being hyped. The overall performance is so close to my Vienna K812s, and my Tokyo 7509s, and the California hardwood models, that it just left me wondering. (All of those in the $1500-$3000 range.) These are way more than just talent cans. I believe these can be used comfortably in any mix/mastering session and get great results. These arent just a good price deal, they are great headphones. Ordering more!

I bought this pair of Tascam TH-07 headphones to use for a recent digital piano purchase. The piano sounds great in a room using the built-in speakers, but was really lacking when it came to using headphones. I had grand hopes for the TH-07s, and MAN have they come through!! The sound is indescribable, other than to say, gorgeous, rich, full piano sound, and that doesn't seem to do it justice. I am extremely pleased and recommend TH-07 headphones wholeheartedly. I have not listened to other music with them, but I expect good things there too. My MAIN reason for purchasing this set was the coiled cable that comes with them. There are two cable options and both were included in the box. The coiled cable has a little too much straight cable between the headphones and the beginning of the coil (for my purposes, which is to keep kitty cat from chewing on the cord), but it is hardly a concern. It seems that the cables have a kind of a push and turn lock to hold the cable in at the headphone end, so be aware and careful of that. If they aren't in properly, the sound quality is reduced. Overall I am extremely pleased with this purchase and recommend the TH-07 Headphones to anyone who is a budget-minded headphone buyer. Great price, great sound. ... More

I read reviews saying these are very good, just below great. They are not. They're not bad at all, I'm going to keep them (bought a pair). If I was using headphones as a primary listening source, these wouldn't do. But as an occasional check-in or tracking in my home studio, they are a great value. What's best about these is the lack of coloration thru the whole mid-range area. This not only means an accurate reproduction of the music, but no obnoxious hot spots that become fatiguing after awhile. Where they disappoint is 1) a closed-in boxy sound 2) bass frequencies weak 3) very exaggerated upper freq area (9-10K) Overall, these are worth the money I paid (on sale @ $75) and I rate them a C+ or B- ... I bought these on a dealzone deal as they were double normally what I got them for. First off they are too large for my head. I didn't think I had a small head as all other headphones have been fine but I can't get them tight enough to stay on my head without moving around. The sound compared to other brands I have is not as clear and sharp. It is noticeable. If I didn't have those already I might think these were fine. It has a little more bass than my others. I comes with two cords which are nice. The padding for the ears is good, better than most stock padding. I usually have to buy upgrades for my others and probably wouldn't for these. I want to send them back but don't want to waste ten bucks on shipping them back so I guess they are a back up pair now. ... More

I love these headphones. I use them on my computer for gaming and for music. Using a creative labs dedicated sound card to power them they really have a good clean sound. The bass is there with some thump and the mids and highs are there without being blown out or over shadowed. I have a pair of Audio-technnica ATH-A550z and I think the Tascam have a better sound. The fit is not quite as sealing as I would like but everyone has a different head shape so I know one size fits all usually fits none. For the price I definitely recommend them. ... More

I got these after reading some great reviews, and those reviews were right. Clarity, definition, response . . . these Tascams have it all--except, that is, a high price tag. I retired my early A-T M50s after listening through the TH-07s (though I'm keeping my M30s for field work). These Tascams will be great for not only listening and tracking, but for mastering as well. Excellent AND inexpensive!

These seem great so far. I've owned a lot of headphones over the years as well as a lot of TASCAM products, and I am totally satisfied with the accuracy and clarity of these headphones. The price was great as well.

These headphones are well constructed and I've been using them for a little over a week. The sound is very good. My disappointment is that they are not very comfortable for me and cannot use them beyond 60 minutes at a time. I'm not sure if its the cushion, size & shape or some combination.
