There are good deals, then there is this lens.
The performance of this lens for the price point makes me not even want to think about the 85mm GM f/1.4. Fast, efficient AF. Sharper images than the GM alternative. I'll take it any day at the trade off of the smallest bit of added distortion and chromatic aberration for the $1,200 it leaves in my pocket. This lens is in a class of its own at this price to performance ratio.

Exceeds our expectations, besides the cost.
What a fantastic lens. Silent, blazing fast and sharp as a tack. Is there anything more you could ask for from a lens? Well of course it needs to be beautiful, and is it ever. I've been so very pleased to work with this lens for the last few weeks. We have a full selection of G master and G lenses and still find that this is the lens we grab for a quick and always wonderful portrait.

Great Lens; Great Value!
Lens feels very solid; focus ring is wonderfully smooth; AF/MF slider is crisp and nicely tactile; practically silent autofocus. This lens has wonderful rendering with beautiful colors and bokeh. I have not used the G or Batis 85s, but this lens does an amazing job, especially for the price! If you are in the market for a fast 85mm prime, on the A series cameras, this is a must buy.

meets my high expectations
For an A7ii I wanted a sharp quick focusing lens in this focal range that is compact and "travel friendly". My 90mm macro tends to be too large to haul around, albeit a sensationally sharp lens. The 85mm gets me close enough to this focal length and is a great performer. Sharp and fast focusing with no noticeable CA. I use the 85mm on both an A7ii and A6300. Very pleased.

Best native FE lens for your A7iii
This lens has been touted as one of the best native lens you can buy for your A7iii: TRUE. Best portrait lens for A7iii: TRUE. Very fast AF: TRUE. Best cost vs benefit ratio: TRUE. Great in low light: TRUE, do you need to pay 3 x the price for the extra f1.2, and a strong arm to carry that extra weight? No. Great in low light: also TRUE! (It's a light sucker.)

Bokehlicious !
Sharp, great color, wide, amazing buttery bokeh, this lens is really good ! I'm not putting 5 cause there's no weather sealing, and it doesn't provide eye-AF (which is really bad considering it's a native FE lens from sony), but the image quality is outstanding I definitely recommend this lens. the focal range is great for portraits, but not only. I'm already in love !

excellent lens
This is a great lens that gives a beautiful light to portraits. I haven't had it for long nor am I a professional, but I have obtained some lovely portraits with it. It works particularly well in low light situations. The automatic focus is extremely precise and needs a little getting used to. Photos are sharp yet soft in their lighting. I am very satisfied with it.

Best lens I've ever owned!
Not much to say about this lens other than it is amazing. Superbly sharp, barely any distortion or vignetting, and lightweight. It rarely suffers from CA/ghosting. I read a review claiming that the 85 1.8 combined with Sony's Portrait Profile emulates film (more specifically Kodak Portra), and man is that true. Stop it down to around 3.5 or 4 for perfect sharpness.

Great lens for fast action indoor volleyball
Was on the fence as to whether or not to buy this, but the price is very reasonable, so I took the plunge. So happy I did. Shot over 1,000 photos with it on my A7III at a national collegiate volleyball tournament this weekend. The lens hunts fast and accurately, for the most part. Really some nice photos coming off this lens. For the price, Id highly recommend it.

Great Value
I watched a lot of YouTube reviews of this lens and they all said the same thing. "It's almost as good as the Zeiss Batis which is twice the price". I have not had a chance to explore all of the uses for this lens, but I can say that without a doubt I am very happy with this lens and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Good price / great value.

Worth twice the price!
Lets get the con out of the way first: theres definite green and purple fringing when shooting wide open (in situations where you might expect it) and you will have to correct for that in Lightroom etc. That aside, this is a tack sharp lens with smooth bokeh and a superb portrait lens on the A7III. At this price youd be crazy not to get it. -Jonathan

Great lens
Very satisfied with the purchase. The lens is very light, good optics with only minor CA, very fast focus. Quite sharp even at 1.8 but if sharpness is of prime concern, close it down at least 1 stop. Primary use for me are for portraits, but it saved my life when needing to shoot a sequence in a crowd with terrible lightening and no flash permitted.

Great for the money!
I use the 85mm f/1.8 on my a6400. I use this lens for walk around people work. I gets me close without being invasive. I shoot the fun (not official) school portraits and recently took shots of a softball game from within the dugout. The results in the infield under the lights were fantastic. I am very pleased and do not envy the other $1400 rivals.

Very sharp light weight lens
Lens is just as sharp as a sigma art lens. No focusing issues at all. All photos from this light weight lens are all very nice and crisp. No need to purchase a high end g master. Only lens that stays on my a7riii. Lens was recommnded by fellow canon photog. Lens is always out of stock. Got lucky on a sale and got the filter for free. Thank you BH!

Great Lens !
This is a great lens for FF and crop Sony bodies. The background blur is really nice, the bokeh is round and smooth, the AF is fast and quiet. Lightweight and well built. Really, there is nothing bad i can say about this lens, especially considering how much more expensive (and heavy) the G-Master is that only gets you from f/1.8 to f/1.4 !

Wowzers
I love this lens. Unbelievable quality for $600. The focus is completely silent and super fast. Sharp? Oh yes. So sharp. Maybe TOO sharp. Really great build quality. Great bokeh. Not the absolute best color but pretty darn good. You probably dont need to spend the extra $1000 or so for the G 1.4 - This lens will do just fine I assure you.

Mostly excellent...
I love how fast it focuses and how sharp it is but I do find the colors rather muted. I bump up the contrast&color in post every time (when I use it,which isn't often)The price difference from the 1.4 G beast is not worth it but I do wonder how that one renders color right out of the camera. This lens is of course a great value.

At first it wouldn't work.
The lens wouldn't always mount on my A7ii. It would not read the aperture and sometimes it wouldn't even turn on with the lens attached. I was going to return it until I thought I might as well update my firmware first. My A7ii did not have the latest firmware and once I updated it the lens works perfectly every time.

Cost to Benefit
Most of us look at a lens as an investment. How much does it cost and how will it perform? This lens is tack sharp and the out of focus areas look great. If your motivation to go mirrorless revolved around size and weight. This lens fits right into the scheme. At under $600 dollars and a great lens, this works for me.

Amazing Lens
This lens is amazingly sharp on the A6300.around 128mm with the crop factor. The detail is razor sharp making the center subject almost 3D. The bokeh is beautiful @f1.8. Focus time is scary, even better than my Sony Carl Zeiss 24mm F1.8 ZA lens which I considered fast. In all a great lens at an almost bargain price

Great lens for the price
Its very sharp and focuses fast in decent light. It hunts a little in low light on my A7RII. It produces nice Bokeh and overall is a fine lens. I think my expectations were too high based on all the positive reviews but I would still recommend if your in the market for a budget friendly 85mm for the Sony A7 models.

Absolutely incredible and should be a staple in your lens line up
I recently switched my 90mm f2.8 to this. The focusing speed is insanely fast, even in low light (havent updated firmware yet). This Is pretty tack sharp, but the character it adds to my portraits has been greatly appreciated. The Bokeh is a little football looking but not to the point that it is distracting.

Can you be in love with a lens?
WOW! I didn't know a lens could be this sharp and this fast. It focuses instantly and is razor sharp. I used it on a senior photo shoot with my new A7iii and was amazed at the pictures it was producing. The bokeh quality was beautiful! If you want a great lens that doesn't break the bank look no further!

Simply Outstanding
Bought it as my first lens after switching from Canon to Sony A7Riii. This lens has performed far better than I expected. The reviews on this website helped alot for the purchase. The details are simply outstanding. 85mm is that perfect length for portraits that speak out. A must have in your bag.
