Performs well above pay grade.

I went a little legacy/manual lens crazy (50mm and 135mm Minolta MDs and Mitakon 50mm f/0.95) after purchasing my Sony A7 body recently and decided I needed to settle down and get a respectable AF/zoom/IS lens and this had good reviews and was quite reasonably priced. Imagine my surprise when this lens immediately proved itself to be way more capable than I expected. Quick to focus, nice colors, and sharper than any kit zoom has business being. I... Show More

Surprisingly sharp, hard to believe kit lens

Jun 1, 2015

I am actually very impressed with this kit lens. its very sharp, surprisingly sharp. I would recommend buying the A7 with the kit lens because you get a good lens for little $$$ on top.

Quite a lens!

Apr 29, 2015

I felt the urge to give this lens 5 stars because mechanical and optical performance are quite good, and Sony spared no expense building it. It is sufficiently sharp; distortion and dispersion are well controlled. Contrast is excellent, and I do get three stops of image stabilization. Sharpness inherent in Zeiss doesn't mean much with digital rigs because we sharpen images in post-production. Large apertures are also less important because the ca... Show More

Good, Not Great

Apr 26, 2015

This is a good kit lens. Nothing more, nothing less. The OSS works pretty well, however I don't think the lens overall is extremely sharp.

Sony 28-70 wide-angle

Jan 5, 2015

While I use mostly a telephoto lens for nature photography, I needed a lens for in-house and wide angle photography. This lens is light, works well for my purpose in working with my new Sony A7 II camera.

More than a Kit Lens, for less than Z

Nov 21, 2014

We here the term, Kit Lens used often to dismiss the economical lenses that come bundled with cameras as lower quality, and ones that we might use until we buy a real lens. In the case of the Sony FE 28-70mm it has served me very well since the purchase of my A7 body (purchased both separately, used on a forum). In recent testing at DxOMark the numbers were very close between the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm and the 28-70. The Zeiss comes in at almost $ (w... Show More

Overall, excellent for the price

Oct 26, 2014

I tested this lens with the Sony a7S. Image quality was good. Not quite as sharp as the Zeiss FE Prime lenses, but above average for a zoom. I do have a slight gripe with the Sony E-Mount lens system as a whole, but that is not really the fault of this lens in particular. Sony uses the focus-by-wire motor inside their lenses while manual focusing, which is terrible for videography. The a7S is essentially made for video, so this is quite counterpr... Show More

Really good for the price!

Sep 29, 2014

I've used this lens in a wide range of settings since purchasing it with my A7 in February.I intended to trade it in on a Sony 24-70 f4 when that lens was released, but the first copies didn't compete very well with what I already owned. Therefore, I wasn't surprised when the well-known review site DxO reported only relatively small advantage of the more expensive (2.5-3x more) 24-70 over the kit 28-70 - and that on the Sony A7r 36mp model. This l... Decent kit lens

Sep 8, 2014

Have had my A7 with this lens for 6 months and though it is all I have to judge the A7 by, very decent kit lens. Overall I am impressed with Bokeh and limited distortion. Sharp enough for everyday use but definitely a kit zoom. Real question is which lens to buy next.
