Panasonic ZS100 pocket 10x zoom bests Sony RX100 for travel

Jun 2, 2016

In 2016, the most portable 10x zoom on a 1-inch-Type sensor is Panasonic LUMIX ZS100 camera (11 oz, 25-250mm equivalent, 21mp). ZS100 is now my favorite camera which can fit a large shirt pocket. Although rival Sony RX100 version III is admittedly sharper throughout 3x zoom, Panasonic ZS100 focuses closer at more zoom settings and enormously extends optical telephoto reach. Anywhere from 3x to 10x zoom (70-250mm equivalent), the ZS100 easily beat... Show More

NOT a Point and Shoot Travel Camera

Jul 29, 2019

Great pictures and many features. However a trusty point and shoot travel camera it is NOT. We purchased the ZS100 to take on a two-week trip to Europe. Set the camera on auto and took off. Soon discovered there was no way to handle the camera without inadvertently activating some feature on the very sensitive touch screen. This meant lost shots or several minutes trying to get things back to auto. So, I deactivated the touch screen. Then h... Show More

Both the best and worst in one camera!

Feb 22, 2017

The Lumix SZ-100 is probably the best camera on the market today to carry on a vacation. A 25-250 zoom with a 1 processor that fits in a small belt case is phenomenal, and no competitor competes, yet. It also is the most complex camera to control unless you use it every day or so. I print and bind the manuals and it is over 400 pages because of everything this camera can do. My Olympus OMD is just over 200 pages. But even with the manual, I have ... Show More

Not user friendly, poor WiFi connectivity

Jan 23, 2017

I bought this camera as an everyday use camera for my wife (not a professional photographer). The camera does take good pictures, but it is too complicated for simple point and shoot use. The camera is well built and is very compact, which leads to another problem - the buttons on the back are too small and can be easily inadvertently activated. On a recent trip to D.C., the camera was accidentally put into 4K photo mode via one of the function b... Show More

Great travel camera replacement

Dec 30, 2017

For Christmas, I finally replaced my 6MP Fuji f31FD travel point-and-shoot with the Panasonic ZS100. My... how camera tech has improved since 2007! Quite a learning curve lies ahead with this powerhouse, but its Intelligent Auto mode allowed me to start taking lovely high-res photos immediately. Two tips: First, change the diopter control beside the viewfinder to make your view as sharp as possible. I spent too much time squinting into it before ... Show More

Great little camera

Mar 7, 2018

I've only had this camera for a week so haven't had time to explore all the advanced features. My first impressions, however, are excellent. I love the compact form, light weight and 10x zoom. I like that the bezel around the lens sets the aperture or shutter speed in the A and S modes. Macro modes seem fine. There are many nifty features, most of which I haven't yet played with, but the post-focus mode is very handy for things like closeups of f... Show More

A lot to like

Apr 4, 2016

I have had a few days to play with this camera after returning a Sony RX100 IV. With the exception of lumix's 2.8 aperture, I definitely prefer this camera. I need more zoom than 3.2x optical and this one delivers 10x. I also strongly prefer the lumix's touch screen as well as the 4K video file formats over the Sony. Much easier integration with Mac, Final Cut, iPhone. The lumix's stabilized 4K video is good, even on the back of an ATV. I like th... Show More

Good But Some Frustrating Features

Oct 20, 2018

Overall, I'm pleased using this camera as my pop in the pocket travel-camera when I don't want to have to carry around heavier gear. I've had a couple of previous iterations of this line. The latest has several improvements and increased capabilities as other reviewers have pointed out. As with all of these cameras the instructions that come with the camera are minimal. I download and printed the manual which helps some. There are some capabiliti... Show More

Surprisingly well designed for its size.

Jan 12, 2018

As a carry around camera, one can hardly go wrong. It shows a lot of thought in the placement of controls and the menu is up to Panasonic standards. The lens moves in and out fast and the focus is sharp. It really surprised me at the video and audio recording for such a small unit. Seems that the battery life is better than many cameras. it takes the same one as the GH 2 and several other models. The little eye level finder is not great but it do... Show More

Excellent Travel Camera

Jan 8, 2018

I purchased this camera specifically to have a pocketable camera to take with me on my business trips to Asia. This was not meant to replace my Sony RX10 III (for vacations) or my Fujifilm X-T1 and lenses for more general photography. For the purpose intended, this camera is great. It feels good in the hand, is responsive and takes very good photos. For best sharpness, I think it works best when stopped down by one stop especially at around the 5... Show More

Abysmal Service

The zoom on this camera seized up on the second day of a European vacation and the camera could not be used for the rest of the trip. I sent it to Panasonic Service on June 27 and have still, October 27, not received it back. They initally ordered the wrong part, then finally they shipped it twice to the wrong address and now they've shipped it and it's disappeared into the USPS. Good features but disappointing viewfinder

Apr 16, 2017

I was seeking a good quality compact camera with a viewfinder - a very hard thing to find. I paid more for this camera in order to get that combination. While I find it is a good quality compact, I am very disappointed with the quality of the viewfinder. The image is very dark, and very small. In strong light conditions - the time a viewfinder is most needed - it is barely usable. Nobody seems to make optical viewfinders anymore; digital seems th... Show More

Fills a need

May 13, 2017

I've been looking for a small camera that I can always have with me without the weight and size of my Pen F + 12-100 lens. Either they were small enough without the zoom range I desired or they had the zoom but were too large. So the ZS100 looked good on paper. Pluses are the 1 sensor works well, I can print to 12 x 18 with no problems up to ISO 800 without touching the noise reduction in Lightroom when shooting raw. It's also a very customizable... Not as good as reviews lead me to believe - images are soft

Dec 18, 2019

6 years ago I bought a Lumix FZ200 which was surprisingly good. The image quality was beyond my expectations until I accidentally dropped it several years ago. It was never the same after that, even after servicing, so I recently decided to replace it with the ZS100 since I wanted a smaller travel camera. After a week of testing, I have sent it back due to the soft lens (lack of crisp focus) and poor color accuracy, especially with reds and blues... Show More

Tips for using the ZS100/TZ100 online manual on the road!

Jan 17, 2018

After my earlier review, I learned more about this excellent camera's 400-page online manual. Some reviewers have justifiably complained about how hard it is to search visually. But since it's a PDF, you can open it on your PC using the free Adobe Reader program, which has its own search field. This allows you to quickly scan the document for specific terms (as long as they match the terms used in the manual). But what about using it on-the-road... Show More

I have a Sony 'point and shoot' for which I have purchased an eyepiece to make it workable outside, but it allows so few adjustments, it is frustrating to use. Nice little pocket camera to cover everything in discrete

I have been using it for a couple of weeks, and I am loving it. In my pocket now I have a camera equipped with a Leica 25-250 mm (f2.8 - 5.9) zoom lens that can shoot RAW in silent mode. Great in sunshine - EXCELLENT 5MP quality

Jun 17, 2019

I thought I needed a compact travel camera to replace my Lumix GM5, something better than a smartphone. After spending one day shooting photos in overcast conditions the photos dissapointed, slow F numbers and high ISO = mushy photos. You must be prepared to compromise on these super zooms, but I wasn't. But when reducing resolution to 5 MP, the photos are quite good. Really 20 MP in a 1 sensor means pixel size is 2.4 m. The DMC-ZS100 was unique in having a large sensor, compact size and 10x zoom.
