I've owned this unit now for 2 1/2 years. Being Audio-Technica, I was expecting some very high quality headphones, but these continue to disappoint. The headphone quality is excellent, which I would expect nothing less from them. The level of comfort is very good. But the rest of the hardware is somewhat awful. The first thing I noticed after purchasing these was the very loud hinge creaking noise (in your hears) coming from the arms. The housing and arms are made of plastic, which results in constant creaking whenever your head moves or the cable tugs at the housing. The headband is okay, but could do with some more padding. The microphone gain wasn't the best for my quiet voice, but I've been able to deal with is with some additional gain. After two years of use, the outer coating of the earpads surprised me by crumbling away. Instead of using breathable leather or something else durable, these earpads are made of foam with a fabric weave casing and coated with a less than paper thin layer of plastic polymer. So now, when I use them I end up with black flakes of plastic on my neck and in my hair. Audio-Technica suggested buying new earpads from their parts department, but I'm sick enough of these headphones so I'm going to peal of the plastic layer of these earpads and deal until I can afford a better brand of headphones. ... I use these for location sound two-way com with the boom operator(s). On one channel I send a mix of program and talkback via triplex snake to a headset amp into which these are plugged in. The boom op's headset mic and the boom mic come back to the mixer on the other two channels. These things have been squished in gear bags, fallen off tables, and subjected to a variety of not-so-gentle treatment in the field. I have never had a failure. And the headset sound quality is excellent. The microphone is adequate for IFB use and casual commentary (sportscasting). I don't know if I would use it as the primary mic for doing voiceover work. I would opt for a large-diaphram mic for that purpose. Never had a feedback issue between the mic and the cans. You do however (as with any headphones) need to take measures to keep the sound coming through the cans from being picked up by a sensitive mic inside a sound booth. Refer to a textbook on audio postproduction 101 for that issue. All in all, an excellent mic headset for crew to communicate with mixer, director and each other, whether using a dedicated IFB system or simply mixing program with headset mics and using triplex cables, as I do. Great value too. ... More

This is my daily go-to headset for amateur radio. Excellent close talking, ambient sound rejecting microphone that matches well to the transceivers. Superlative earphone receivers, with good balance, flat response (I.e. not too much base or treble) and very comfortable, durable headband, earphone pads, and overall construction is solid, and substantial, but lightweight. I purchase replacement earphone pads now and then to keep it looking and feeling like new. Solid, durable replaceable cable. No regrets. Durable and stiff mic boom arm, so it beds to suit when I set it up, but it stays in place while working all day. The whole point is to have the mic in one place all the time - so it is just right - it stays put after you adjust it. I am very satisfied with this headset. ... More

Bought one of these for my mobile rig. The headphones are clean and clear, the mic is crisp and loud. and they are nice and sturdy built. After trying some cheaper headsets I finally bought these and they are worthy every penny. Like it even better than the Shure SM2. Only complaint would be that my ears get really warm after using them for about an hour, but I get that with any isolating headphones. I'll definitely be getting a second set to round out my mobile setup.

Our group broadcasts live eSports tournaments from an indoors location. Prior to these headsets, we used Samson Q8 microphones to pick up the commentary audio for a live PA mix that was sent to the web. With these headsets we didn't have to sacrifice quality. Quite the opposite, we actually gained it as we found they replicated the sound from the Q8's almost perfectly (you have to really push it past reasonable to start telling a difference, the mics are quite nice) but kept speaker distance much more consistent. The cord length was just fine, only thing that I had to change up was buying a microphone extension cable to take the XLR input to the mixer while allowing the stereo jack to make it to the headphone amplifier (I didn't want to rip the cord down the middle and split the sheathing into two cords). We're quite satisfied with the product, excellent quality at an excellent price. And man do they look professional! It really added new flair to the live stream to see people commenting on a game with broadcasting-style headsets as opposed to straight dynamic mics sitting in front of their faces. We considered using condenser mics since out setup allows for phantom power, but we ultimately elected for this model as it's much more flexible for the people using it and the environment we're in. We'll buy another pair if/when these ever go out. ... More

Use this headset for sports broadcasts (hockey, football, baseball, basketball). Good frequency range, comfortable, the flexible boom is good for less experienced broadcasters who have poorer mic position awareness (you can adjust it for them before the broadcast). Personally, I changed out the ear pads with Auray velour replacement pads, but that's just a personal preference - the ones it comes with are fine. Of the broadcast headsets I've used over the years, the signal to noise ratio is very good - very quiet without picking up too much ambient noise. Dynamic mic, so no phantom power required. Plenty of cord length, and having the terminators already installed is nice (assuming you're good with an XLR male mic and a 1/4 stereo headphone plugs). About the only drawback is that the flexible boom can be a little noisy if the person using it is inexperienced and fiddles with it during the broadcast. If they leave it alone, it's perfectly quiet and doesn't move, but if they keep trying to adjust it while their mic is live it will of course make noise. ... More

I have used the AudioTechnica BPHS1 headset with solid success in multiple applications, including, but not limited to, computer and digital recording, amateur radio communications, and computer speech recognition. Microphone output is rich, clear, and full, with no distortion. Just the right output volume - unlike the weak, punk output I found on two other leading brand headsets. The earphone receivers are clear, rich, balanced, and full, and do not adversely color the sound. Lightweight, comfortable, and plenty durable. The removable, replaceable cable is sufficiently robust. The microphone boom is sturdy and stays in place, but can easily be swung up or down out of the way. Place the mic element just to the side of the mouth, lest you breath on it. The set has held up well over several years with moderate handling stress and strain (I take care of my toys, so it does not get tossed about or dropped, yet the set is plenty robust for professional studio work.) I routinely receive spontaneous, unsolicited compliments on my transmit audio. This set is a definite keeper. Aside from amateur radio, this set would be an excellent choice for live sports announcers. Just MY take... your mileage may vary. JHR ... More

I have a side gig as PA announcer for a local university and they decided to employ a DJ for their basketball games this year. He plays so loud it adversely affects my hearing and my equilibrium during and after the games. I have used a Shure WH20XLR headset for 20 years but it has no earpads for passive noise reduction. The A-T BPHS-1 has changed my announcing experience. I don't use the 1/4" plug since I don't need to hear my own voice so I just plug the XLR cable into my switch box and talk away. It greatly reduces the DJ music but I can still converse with the officials and fellow workers at the scorers table. The best part is being able to remove the headset after the game and not feel fatigued from battling all of the noise. The A-T also has a better frequency response than my Shure in addition to being more sensitive so I don't have to shout to be heard and my voice comes across deeper as well. It is extremely well made and I have not experienced any of the creaking issues mentioned in other reviews. The boom mike stays where you put it and you don't have to have the windscreen right up against your mouth. ... More

I have been really happy with these. I use them to record announcer audio for professional wrestling matches in an extremely loud environment. They do an excellent job of blocking out the ambient noise, which is substantial. I have used Sennheiser units for many years, but this project did not have the budget for them. I took a chance on these and they have been excellent. I do prefer the sound quality of the Sennheisers, but for value, these are excellent and my clients have been very happy with the results. I would definitely purchase these again.

This is a great, affordable headset. The mic can rotate so it can be on either side of the talent's head. They are also very comfortable, our shoots regularly run two hours or more and the talent doesn't complain about them (unlike our old headsets). The one negative I've found about these so far is that the two connectors at the end of the cable are wired so that they're very close to each other. The cable that comes off the headset is very long and there's a little rubber block that holds the two connectors so that they each only have a foot or two of slack at the end. It keeps the cable looking nice but it's inconvenient for me because I'm running the headphones to an amp on a desk and now the microphone cable has to be plugged in up there too. It would be nice if there was enough slack to do it elsewhere. That's the one rub that keeps these from being perfect for me. ... More

This is a solidly built headset. The mic sounds great and the headphones have reasonable audio quality but are disappointingly uncomfortable. My daily driver is an Audio-Technica ATH-m40x, and I can wear those headphones all day with no issues whatsoever. I was expecting the BPHS1's to have similar comfort, but they are clearly not. The over-the-ear section of the BPHS1 is just slightly smaller than the m40x's, and this makes it press uncomfortably on my ears. In addition, the padding of the BPHS1's is much softer, meaning that it ends up pressing plastic instead of a firmer foam that would have a less sharp feel to it. I still use these daily for videoconferencing. I was hoping they could also replace my m40x's for audio listening, but they do not and cannot, due to their lacking comfort. ... More

I had a radio host return this item. After testing the complaint, it indeed creates a lot of noise when the user turns their head. It's not only distracting to the speaker, but I even see it showing up on the level. I've taken the cord apart and plugged in, but it still makes a ton of noise. If you plan on being completely still when speaking and recording, you should be ok. It's not ideal however since the speaker has to be very conscious of not moving.

Very annoying. Had to wrap it around the boom mic to try and stop it touching me and tried to remain totally motionless which wasnt easy to do. Just be aware of that.
