Favorite Lens of ALL TIME (but buyer beware)

Apr 17, 2016

This is the sharpest, lens with the most beautiful booked and the most three dimension gorgeous rendering I've ever used. It's my favorite focal length and I like to shoot wide open. After once owning the Leica Summilux 35 f/1.4 ASPH (which I sold when the prices went up and they were hard to come by- I couldn't justify it anymore) I sadly thought I would never own another lens I liked as much. Long story short, this lens exceeds that one, has fa... Show More

What a great lens!

Sep 23, 2018

I love this lens. Currently I use it on a Sony a6500. Because of the crop factor this acts approximately like a 50mm (which is my favorite size- especially for video.) I will be purchasing the a7s III (when it comes out to use with it.) I love that I can change the aperture directly from the lens (which you cannot do from the other less expensive 35mm e-mount that I almost bought.) I can tell you, it is worth the extra money. FYI- I am not agains... Show More

A must have lens for the a7 platform.

May 20, 2015

I was a fortunate recipient of an early release of this lens. In one word, fantastic! Spend the money and get this lens when it's available, you will not regret the decision. It's solid build and sharpness from edge to edge are amazing. Balance is good and the auto focus drive can only be heard by superman. In-lens OSS would have been nice, but it's not a deal killer. This lens paired with the a7II is magical. Low light performance is excellent a... Show More

Awesome lens if you don't mind the cost, size, and weight.

Apr 4, 2017

Awesome lens. Also very expensive, and also pretty big and heavy, but it feels pretty nice in my hands and I have no complaints about quality of the lens, no need to go into detail as there are plenty of more detailed, technical reviews available. It is, however, focus by wire like many other Sony E-mounts. If you can't stand the size/weight, there are other E-mount 35mm primes out there that are much smaller, as well as much more affordable. Great depth of field. Careful about use with Came Single!

Jan 20, 2016

The lens itself is wonderful and it's depth of field capabilities are great. I purchased as a main lens for taking videos with the A7S II. I'm not a professional, so I realize now that this lens is not as versatile in general as the Tessar. One word of warning. I bought the A7S II and a Came Single gimbal primarily to take videos of my kids. This lens is too heavy for that setup. I now have to get a Tessar lens (which is maybe what I should have done in the first place) so that it can work with the gimbal. This is obviously my own fault. Just wanted others to know, in case you were wondering.

Loses to Sigma...

Aug 13, 2015

READ! It's not bad overall, but in comparison this lens to another beast I have which is Sigma 35mm f1.4 art I say don't buy this and go for Sigma. I tested out both of them on my new A7R2 and results are very strange:Sigma:+ WAY MORE details and sharper image overall (attached examples bellow)+ Less chromatic aberrations- A little bit slower with AF, because I used it with LA-EA3Zeiss:+ Fast and precise AF- Resolution is poor on 42mpx- Really strong chromatic aberrations on f1.4- Cost higher than it's concurrent lens and that can't be justified considering everything I wrote.

Killer Optic

Apr 17, 2015

Beautiful image quality. The images have a very appealing quality- sharp and smooth. A little soft at f/1.4 but what optic short of the Otus line (3 times the price and no AF) delivers tack sharp images wide open? Very sharp images at f/2 which is great for environmental portraits. I find f/1.4 depth of field to shallow with 3/4 length images of people. AF is fast and accurate on my A7II body. Great build quality. I like the feel of the camera lens combo. This is a must have lens. The first reviewer probably got a bad copy or maybe the lens was damaged in transit.

The best FE lens from Sony/Zeiss so far!

May 22, 2015

I got this lens from my girlfriend as a gift. The lens might be big for others, but for me it balance well with the a7ii. I love the design of this lens esp the aperture ring. It feels good in your hand and I can't put this lens down the moment I got it from my mail. Its beautifully constructed with metal except for a plastic lens hood. I have FE 55 1.8 which is very sharp but this lens outshine the 55 1.8. Yes, this lens is expense but it compensates well with the design and the beautiful images produced by this lens. Good job Sony .

Best prime lens I ever bought, but

Jan 19, 2017

So i decided to buy a prime lens for Sony a7ii A real glass. So I end up with 35mm for the wise shots you know... I tested yesterday at photoshoot in cloudy condition. It wasn't killer !! The shots came out from that lens were incredible!!! So sharp at F 1.4 but the down side is the CA When you shoot at 1.4. The focusing so fast !! And smooth. A bit heavy but it's alright I shot for 5 hours never had an issue. I haven't tested it in low light but for sure it's gonna kill it. Highly recommended

Fantastic lens for Sony a7 series

Sep 11, 2015

I used this lens with the Sony a7r and I am very satisfied. For me, I use this lens for environmental portrait. At f1.4 this lens is perfectly sharp. Actually to my eyes the images it produces are even better looking than the legandary 55 1.8 ZA. The aperture ring is great. I don't have to turn the stupid dial forever to change the aperture. Just set and go. One con of this lens is definitely its size. It is certainly massive. I won't use this lens as my day to day lens because of this.

In a word: WOW.

Mar 5, 2018

Easily one of the best lenses I've owned in my 18 years of photography. Works amazingly well in low-light, renders beautiful bokeh and colors. This is my go-to walk-around lens for my Sony A7RIII. The smooth aperture ring is such a great feature to have and the focus ring's dampening is so smooth, with just enough resistance. The only thing not so great about it is the size and weight. But, if you want absolutely breath-taking photos, sometimes concessions have to be made.

If you only need one lens, want one lens, feel all magnum inspired, buy one. It's fabulous. Sharp (who cares, most lenses are sharp at this sort of money, if not then why would you be looking?) fast ( like an oiled 80's temptress in a leotard) Heavy? (the only lens ive ever thought of heavy, was a Zenit zoom I dropped on my brothers head. The only heavy thing there was my dads hand). Go buy it, its way better than you probaly are.

I love this lens. With my a7rii, I've been able to capture some simply beautiful images. It is incredibly sharp wide open, and gives images a beautiful film-like character. It is lighter than both my 50mm 1.4 Planar and the 85mm 1.4 G Master but still feels extremely substantial. Build quality is exceptional. Not a cheap lens and there are a good amount of great options at this focal length but for me it is well worth the money.

Follow up for "Great, not amazing..."

Oct 16, 2018

Took three tries to get a good copy of this lens. This most recent copy is absolutely amazing. Literally, nothing bad to say. I'm in love. If you order this lens, just be aware that there is high variation from copy to copy and it "might" take a few tries to get a good one. But it's absolutely worth it when you do. This thing is a complete beast, and makes absolutely beautiful images.

This lens is awsome

Jan 18, 2017

If you are A7R II shooter, this is the lens to die for or put it another way, this a lens makes want to purchase the A7R II. The quality and performance is truely exceptional. It is heavier and larger than the Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA but it feels right when shooting. I suspect it will also be a great lens for the A7S II as the manual focus is so smooth and easily managed while shooting.

Hard lens for Sony FS7

Feb 16, 2016

I bought this lens to use as with the Sony FS7, which is the equivalent to a 52mm with the APS-C sensor. Specially, I bought it to shoot interviews at F1.4 with gives a nice bokeh. Because the lens is so fast, I have to the set the FS7's internal ND filters to 1/64 or there is too much light. It works great on interior interviews with studio lighting. I'm excited to try it outside.

Very solid lens with amazing build quality

Mar 9, 2017

Amazing, fast lens. You get what you pay for. Build quality is excellent. Feels very solid in hand and love the click/declick aperture ring. Feels very satisfying to use. Image quality is also excellent. Super super sharp images even at wide open (shot on my a7s) Note that lens is fairly large and heavy so defeats the purpose of small form factor of a mirrorless body a little bit.

Never been so inspired by a lens

Jun 28, 2017

On my Sony Alpha a7r II this lens is astonishingly good. It's so good it inspires me to shoot. Of all my Canon L lenses and of all my Leica M lenses, I've never felt more inspired by a lens. It balances well on the a7r II and it's much easier to shoot than my 24-70mm GM f/2.8 zoom - because it's lighter and smaller. Sharpness wide open at f/1.4 is ridiculously good.

big, not cheap and way too much CA for my taster wide open, maybe i had a bad copy, returned it right away....compared this to 16-35 and 28-135 (at f4) and honestly did not find the difference worth the extra weight, size and money....will look at the 2.8 as a walk around lens, this is definitely not it.....really surprised this gets so many rave reviews

One lens to rule them all

Sep 21, 2015

I sold my 35mm f/2.8 for this beast and it is in a league of its own. Yes it's big and expensive but if you don't want to compromise then there is no better 35mm for the A7 series of cameras. The 'pop' is there straight out of the camera and wide open it is simply stunning. It's even better that the 55mm f/1.8 and that is saying something!

Lovely but really Large

Mar 17, 2016

So...low light photo and video are sharp. Colors and contrast are wonderful. Here is the thing...the lens is the size and weight of a decent medium-tele zoom. Just be prepared that this isn't a great lens for walking around. I'm hoping that we get a Batis 35. I like this lens, but it rarely ever finds its way in my camera bag.

This lens is amazing. Great IQ, and build quality. The only thing that hinders me from absolutely loving this lens is its size. It would've been the perfect walk-around lens for me if not for its size and weight. For that, I'm not completely satisfied, but I'm still keeping it coz of the stunning image quality!
