Loving this camera and BH Photo & Video's Customer Service

I have researched cameras for sometime because I wanted something that fit within my budget and could allow me to photograph Sports (rally racing, in particular), birds / nature, as well as floral arrangements and events I professionally design for and plan. This camera's long zoom has the ability to capture cars coming from a distance in clear shots, and has a great bokeh for close-up shots. Only thing I wish is for the auto zoom in / out to be ... I've had Sony products before and didn't like Memory Stick as it was not universally accepted into a lot of other hardware. This Sony uses SD cards or Memory Stick - much better. We didn't want a DSLR and carry heaps of lenses.People think they'll become professionals - and it never happens.Shutter speed is super quick - very little delayThe Zoom is awesome - you could easily get great photos, even from the cheap seatsCamera is very lightNice to ho... Good, but...

Jun 3, 2014

Like many, I suppose, I bought this camera for it's reach and to use when I did not want to carry a DSLR and bag full of lenses. In almost all respects, I am happy with it's performance. The one area of disappointment is it's write time. The camera displays Processing after virtually every shot and does this regardless of camera setting or card used. In fact, i bought the most expensive card of my life to try to improve this issue. No luck. When ... Show More

Excellent Camera

May 9, 2014

I wanted a Mega Zoom bridge camera. I looked at Nikon P600, Canon SX50 and Panasonic FZ70. I decided to buy the Sony HX400V. This camera offers more features and the image quality is better than the other cameras. Image stabilization is also excellent. I can get great hand-held photos at full 50X. I use the PROGRAM mode because i can set sharpness, saturation, contrast and other features to my liking. Battery life is good, but i recommend an extr... Show More

Better than my DSC-HX200V

Aug 9, 2014

Comparing the 400V to my old 200V: PROs The lens cap stays on when I turn on the camera and doesn't pop off as easily - better designed. The menu button is at the bottom and the playback button is in the middle which works better for me. Leaves the movie button better positioned at the top. Menu redesign great. No scrolling. The choice I need stays selected, so I can quickly format the memory card each day without tiresome clicking of the 200V. A... Show More

Sony needs to fix E62:10 problem

Aug 3, 2016

I bought this camera twice. First time I went to East Africa, on the way back it started to show E62:10. Then I got busy forgot about it. When I had time to look at it, it was already out of warranty. Second time I thought maybe I had bad luck the first time. With all the extra batteries, charges, I ordered another one for my trip to UK. It arrived a day before my departure. Out of the box, when I turned on for the first time, it showed E62:10. L... Great Camera

May 10, 2015

Took this Camera to photograph Whooping Cranes on a boat tour out of Rockport, Texas, the 50X Zeiss lens had enough reach to get good photographs even hand held,,,yet the 24mm wide angle to 1200mm 50X gives this Camera incredible versatility from wide angle to extreme telephoto. Even though the sensor is small if you do not blow up large prints and mostly post on the computer and social media the camera works fine. I shoot mostly in Shutter or Ap... Show More

Great camera that meets or exceeds all expectations

Aug 6, 2015

I recently took this camera on a biking vacation to Prince Edward Island , Canada . This is a great travel camera: light weight with very versatile and sharp Zeiss lens with wide angle and phenomenal zoom capability. The panorama and video capability worked beautifully during vacation travel. The camera is intuitive to use but I would really appreciate a more complete printed owners manual: I guess I'm old school . I have also used the camera for... Show More

What a GREAT camera

Sep 11, 2016

This camera is so easy to use and is packed with so many tools! I purchased this to replace my aging Sony Cyber-shot. That one had a 12x zoom. This one has a 50x optical zoom. What a difference. The controls are easy to access and the pictures are outstanding! It is slightly larger, but so much better! It has built in Wifi so you can transfer images without a wire if you wish. The LCD screen is bright and you can pull it out from the camera so it... Show More

I do not understand how this camera got 1 good review. You can take about 10 pictures before battery dies. Trying to take pictures in low light is completely useless. Worst of all the camera cant focus. I bought it to take picture of my sons graduation. I missed shot of him slowly walking down isle because camera would not focus. All controls are very sluggish. Next I tried to take pictures of my daughters gymnastics championships. The sports mod... Show More

Bought this for a field camera at work. We need to take photos of large areas from on the ground as well as aerial photos, so this camera is great since it has both panorama and zoom. we haven't tested the built in GPS yet, but we're hoping it will be a great asset. the photos this camera takes are excellent quality and it's pretty quick. the burst mode is a little hard to work with, but i was also trying it at extreme zoom without a tripod, so i... Geared up for the wildebeest migration in Masi Mara and gorilla stalking in Rwanda. Excellent choice for easy to carry camera that still get great shots. The nits that Sony could/should fix: (1) no way to connect the lens cap -it'll be lost in ten minutes! (2) need better how to use manual. The downloaded version contains lots of lists and tech specs -- but no where does it really explain how to use all the wonderful settings. I am certain that I... Show More

Great Travel Camera

Jun 30, 2014

Most superzooms are small with poor image quality, not so with the Sony. This camera exceeds the others in image quality and produces clear shots from corner to corner. The camera is SLR sized and feels great in your hands. Zoom range is incredible and you always have the right focal length. Sony sensors produce great results and this 20mp sensor looks better than the 12-16 mp of the competition. If you want a vast range of focal lengths, this is... Show More

I am amazed with this camera after 60 years as a shutterbug

I have been shooting with this camera exclusively for the past 2 weeks. I am amazed by the quality of my photos. The DSC-HX400V is a bridge unit very versatile, pleasant to use, the zoom is very nice for animal or nature photos at great distance, the LCD repositionable is a plus. Unfortunately after less than 3 years of use the stabilizer breaks down, making it impossible to take sharp pictures. Amazing piece of technology!

Jan 15, 2015

I am used to using a dslr and was concerned with how fast the shutter worked to focus and take a photo. It is fast and mostly accurate. At the longest zoom it is a little harder to focus sometimes, but mostly really good. There is a bit of a lag between photos on which apparently the speed of the SD card doesn't seem to help, but this is something I will have to get used to. The photos are quite amazing, even at long zooms, shooting birds through grubby windows. I am thrilled and looking forward to using this camera on my travels and everyday life so that I don't have to carry then heavy dslr.

Definitely not a full boat DSLR

Aug 20, 2019

I bought this to replace a Nikon D5400 with an 18-300 lens. Just too much to haul around at my age. The camera is very light weight and seems flimsy as compared to my older Nikon. The lens zoom range is fantastic and the test pictures seems clear for casual shots. I cannot get the camera to work properly in the macro mode, possible user error? Getting ready for a 9 week trip and the light weight will certainly come in handy but the plastic used in the camera is very thin so I hope it holds up well. I did a lot of research and this seems to be the best buy in the $400.00 range.

Use the DSC -400V instead of binoculars for birding

Aug 7, 2015

I often ride a bicycle on the many rails to trails available in our area. As a long time birder I can identify many by call and sight. Binoculars and a field guide are a big help for a good deal of in field sightings. This operation takes time to use and moreover are cumbersome to carry. With this camera on a belt one reaches in the case removes the 400V zooms in and takes a picture. You can check it out the details later and continue on your way . Unique photos of opportunity on many occasions are available to you in this one high quality and very versatile camera.

It is surprising how maany of the same features of my a77II are included in this compact little body. The autofocus is blazing fast and the zoom range is incredible. It is also nice to have actual 55mm filter threads on the front of the lans The only shortcoming I have found is there is no way to turn the LCD around facing the body to protect the screen when not in use.

The pictures demonstrate like no other picture I've ever taken the incredible close up ability of the camera to create SNAP, DAZZEL and BRILLIANCE with razor sharp edges. The lens did not cost $10,000 and the camera did not cost $3,0000! The camera weight is vary light so you can take it with you and not damage your neck from a heavy camera and long lens hanging around it. When pictures like this come up you have your camera around your neck.

very good camera

Aug 23, 2016

Bought this to have in the car in case I saw something notable. I run across widelife frequently and didn't want to drag the slr and all the gear. Camera takes very good pics, not as good as the slr but very suitable for the purpose. Pros: inexpensive, has viewfinder to help framing picture especially in very bright sunlight and helps hold steady during long zooms, has good zoom range, acepts filters. Cons: slow picture processing-have to wait between shots, electronic viewfinder not good for manual focusing. Overall I'm satisfied considering the value.
