A Great Camera!

Feb 14, 2015

Over the years, I have owned dozens of cameras, from simple point and shoots to expensive and heavy slr's and dslr's. In consideration of the foregoing, I can unequivocally say that the HX400V is a great multi-use camera. It is light weight, has a great zoom, and takes very sharp pictures from 24mm to 1200mm and 1200mm to 2400mm is good also. Now, of course, I am taking the photos in south Florida where the intense sun helps in the photo taking process, so I don't know how the camera will work in northern states. In south Florida, it is great!

Outstanding Bridge Camera

Oct 26, 2014

I purchased the HX400 as an alternate to carrying my DSLR when I want to go for a bicycle ride & shoot wildlife or flowers along the way. My pictures are sharp courtesy of the Zeiss lens & Sony's SteadyShot Image Stabilization. The only negative comment & the reason for only a 4 star rating is the write time. This is not a camera designed for sports or any other situation where you need to shoot multiple pictures quickly. I checked the travel & family photos boxes. The caveat being don't expect to shoot several pictures in quick succession.

Great portability for great pictures.

Super camera with great 50X optical telescopic range and excellent optics. The extreme detail shown on the high resolution LCD screen really aids in allowing you to tailor your results to satisfy your aims. Since I never use the digital addition to the telescopic range, having part of the viewfinder bar graph of the telescopic extent include it all the time is not appreciated. The 20 MP resolution combined with the excellent optics makes for great detail in my pictures. I could even count the hairs in my cat's ears when I took its picture.

Great Camera for my Wife, not an expert

Oct 14, 2014

This camera was primarily purchased to take pictures of our kids playing sports. We needed a high zoom camera without carrying 2 lens' everywhere. This camera fits the bill exactly not small but not huge by any means. Takes great photos and with enough education will be perfect for what we need. I only gave it 4 stars because the book to use it is non existant and there is very little online support for it. If you look hard enough you can find anything but had a very hard time finding setup info on this camera. Besides that it is great.

Update to earlier review

Mar 3, 2015

I have been using this camera quite a bit over the last few weeks. I have gotten good to great results in most shooting situations. Two areas where it fell a bit short: Shooting a stage performance. I was about 20-25 feet from the stage. Flash did not illuminate enough to capture sharp image without motion blur as performers moved about the stage. 2nd, as noted in another review, the write speed is slow for a camera in this price range so it can be a bit maddening waiting for the camera to be ready for a follow up shot.

Awesome camera for the non-professional

Nov 24, 2014

Optical zoom is terrific without having to carry a giant lens attachment. Clarity and resolution drops off when digitally zoomed. However, even with this minor disadvantage, this is a camera that goes with me everywhere. It is light, point and shoot makes it very easy to use, stabilization is great even when fully zoomed, manual overrides add the special touch pros look for in a camera, GPS and WiFi options are added conveniences, and the ability to run apps on the camera are a real plus when doing time lapse shoots.

Zooming out is a problem!

Oct 3, 2014

I love the feel & the image quality but my main reason for this was the video and the problem is when you zoom out od a distance scene and stop the video jumps forward just a bit. I was hoping that it was just a camera thing but it shows up on the video as well. You actually do not have to be in video mode to see this, just zoom out of a distance scene and watch the image jump forward just a bit. It's not a lot but noticeable when viewing a HD video! So in other words when you stop zooming out the video does not.

What a high quality bridge digital camera

Sep 24, 2015

I use this camera for nature walks. It out performs my Canon XTi rebel using a 55-200 canon lens as far as image clearity/quality. The zoom is awesome for capturing birds off some distance. There is a bit of learning curve when I want to do close-up macro shots but I finally achieved the results after two times out with camera. it's light to carry but feels robust in my hands. the only thing I don't like is I burn thru a battery in less then three hours out so I purchased a couple backups and now I'm good to go.

My experience with this camera

Mar 27, 2016

I bought this camera 16 months ago and up until 3/25 I was thrilled with it. On 3/25 it suddenly started an odd lens shift and wobbling every time I depressed the shutter button, eventually bringing up the dreaded E62:10 error flashing on the screen. Come to find out that I am not even close to the only person this has happened to shortly after the warranty has run out. I'm taking it in tomorrow to be looked at, but from what I have researched Sony will want $200 to fix it. Won't buy again.

BETTER THAN NIKON p900

Jun 16, 2018

I bought this camera first several years ago. the quality of the photos was equal to my DLSR cameras. When I broke it, I decided to get the megazoom p900 to replace it as I wanted the extra zoom to do wildlife photography. I did get the ability to zoom in more with the Nikon but at the cost of photo quality even in the optical zoom mode. I am so disappointed. Now, I must see if I can get my Sony fixed or either replace it as I am tired of poor photo quality. This is an incredible camera!

So far, so good.

Sep 29, 2014

I've been using it every day for a week, outdoors, for nature, and especially for wildlife video. It's better than my Canon SX50 in almost every way except color. I do like Canon's color better than Sony's or Panasonic's. I like this Sony's 60p, its relatively quiet, smooth zoom mechanics, and the ability to use a dedicated mic on the hot shoe.I wish the Sony had a fully articulating screen (as the Canon SX50 does) and I find the hard rubber around the viewfinder not glasses-friendly.

Great camera...

Dec 23, 2014

It is a great camera with many many features. I really only have two complaints. 1. The location of the NFC is in a bad location next to the strap holder. I have a very difficult time getting my phone in the right place to connect. To bad they didn't switch it around where the WI-FI is. 2. The Sony phone support in my opinion is terrible. They do not know the product and several times gave me wrong information. The telephone lines wherever they are very bad also.

Superior camera

Oct 3, 2014

This latest Sony Cyber-shot camera is by far, the most technologically advanced and superior camera to other brands I've tried. The Carl Zeis lens lends itself to a professional photographic experience. I have no negatives to say about this camera. This is the fifth Sony camera I have purchased through the years and I have not been disappointed by any of them. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone that would like a fantastic photographic experience.

Good for video

The best of this camera is the controll ring on the barrel, that permit a good adjustment of the zoom or manual focus in video recording. The drawback of this camera is the autofocus, previus have a Lumix FZ-70 that have a more confident working. This is more notoriusly on video, when adjust the zoom the image go to out of focus until stop zooming. Another drawback is the batery life, that last after half day of triping (my previous fz-70 last over one day).

Handy Zoom Camera.

Aug 12, 2019

I love the camera. I bought it to replace my Panasonic Point & Shoot camera, which I am very fond of. But the camera is not as good as my Panasonic camera on some levels. I can't seem to focus on distant subjects that are small, like Dragonflies, which, are my favorite subjects, but otherwise i'm happy for the longer zoom, which is the reason that I bought this camera. I need to use it more for other pix taking to be to judge more.

Exactly what it says it is

Read a lot of reviews while looking for a point and shoot with great zoom and settled on this one. They call it a bridge camera but it's really a fancy point and shoot, and that's fine. I'm not a photography enthusiast, I'm a guy who likes to take good photos while traveling. I've figured out most of the settings, and the camera is user friendly. Connects to the phone easily but having trouble connecting it wirelessly to my laptop.

Best ever Bridge camera

Mar 13, 2019

This is my third DSC-HX400V. I Volunteer on whale watching boats. the X50 Optical Karl Zeiss Zoom is so easy to work from close up to far away shots. Love the GPS data feature to catalog each of the sightings. I also photograph airliners at LAX airport, same love for the ease to shoot at distance with great results. Best feature also is to take the camera where larger cameras with detachable zoom are not allowed ( concerts)

Purchased power zoom for SXSW 2015

Feb 26, 2015

I have been carrying the 'smaller' Sony point and shoot HD camera for a couple years now and have gotten some fantastice shots. I looking forward to a more 'powerful and responsive' camera this trip and already know the 'pics will be good'. Since what I love to do most is 'photography', you can never have too much. I spent many years with SLR cameras and love the ease of use of these 'point and shoot'. You can't go wrong.

2 more close up pics at full optic zoom

Jan 30, 2018

Was again really happy with picture results at maximum optical zoom. (these birds are Lapland Longspurs} Slight vignetteing was done on photo shop, not by camera as these photos will probably be entered in the Indiana State Fair. Have been hearing lots of complaints about picture quality of Canon and Nikon long zooms not giving good pictures at normal or wide angle. No such problem with the above Sony.

Great Camera

Sep 2, 2014

At first, I must apologize for an error on my previous review for this camera. I was actually commenting on the A6000 Sony camera. The HX400V is an excellent camera. It is the best non DSLR camera I've owned. I am impressed with the Zeiss lens and the 50X optical zoom. The camera yields crisp, true color realistic pictures. Although in most aspects it is very similar to the HX200 I have, I like it better.

An outstanding super zoom camera at an affordable price.

Oct 25, 2019

I own and use expensive camera gear, but I wanted to purchase a camera for my grown daughter that would have a good quality telephoto for wildlife. She is not one to use an interchangeable lens camera. I compared pictures from the Sony Cyber-shot with my own and was extremely impressed with the reach with which the camera could grab quality wildlife pictures. She is trilled with the camera and so am I.

Exceptional camera

Aug 10, 2016

I bought this camera after much research between different brands due in large part to the functions it offers over the others. I shoot mostly wildlife/nature and this camera has not disappointed. The only con so far is this camera offers so many features, it has been quite a learning curve. However, the ease of use, the superior quality of the camera and the photos that come from it override that.

Many nice features but...

Jun 19, 2017

I like the pano feature, the macro shots it takes, and the video. All good. But to be fair, the ultra-zoom shots are not very good. And isn't that why people want an ultra-zoom? I've tested several brands and they all come up short. So I've decided I will keep this one for the features I do like, and realize I will not get the zoom shots I want without attaching a big lens to my DSLR.
