Great buy for the money and works for me

Oct 27, 2016

My walk around lens when I travel is the Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens on an A7 and I wanted a lens that was significantly smaller, lighter and faster. First off, I read a lot of reviews that went from bad to great so I decided to give it a try, the worst case being a return. The lens is incredibly small and light when fitted to the A7. It is almost like there is no lens on the camera when compared to the Tessar Since most of my... Show More

Not a Bad lens actually

Sep 25, 2016

I got this lens from a friend as a package deal when i purchased from him Full Frame Sony A7 body to try out FF system without going Canikon as i prefer mirror less systems. Anyways i have purchased A7 MK2 since along with Sony/Zeiss 55mm f1.8 for 4 times the price of this one so i have something from a top shelf to compare this relatively cheap lens to. After recent firmware update to 0.2 it is quite a bit faster at AF and became not a bad lens ... Show More

Ok for the money

Aug 8, 2016

This lens feels like a toy. It is small and lite, made of cheap plastic. The image quality is good considering the low price. It's sharp and it produces a nice bokeh, but It suffers from heavy chromatic aberrations. Auto Focus is SUPER SLOW. It's annoying to shoot with. If you have a camera with an APS-C sensor, look at the 50mm f/1.8 OSS as it's just as sharp, has nice bokeh with much less CA, much faster AF, and it has optical stabilization- necessary since Sony APS-C cameras don't have in-body stabilization.

Slow Auto Focus a Deal Killer

Jul 18, 2016

Pros: lightweight, small, sharp, nice bokeh, decent price. Cons: super loud when autofocusing, hunts for focus everytime. (My experience on A7RM2 with latest firmware 7-17-2016) --I'm returning it as I shoot models and I'm missing poses as the lens takes too long.

The First Sony E-Mount Lens You Should Buy

Jun 9, 2016

For $248, this is stunning performance. Looks plastic but very good plastic for $248, noisily but not that bad. this is a huge bang for the buck and I feel every Sony user should own one. When I first held this lens I was surprised at how good is images. Compact, lightweight, easy to carry, F1.8 maximum aperture for low-light shots and it has aspherical element.

Worth the price... but I'm still sending it back

Jun 3, 2016

This lens has very good optics. Looks and feels good (better than the canon nifty fifty anyway). It's just, cheap. Sony seemed to do the best with what they had but it just isn't there enough to keep the lens in my bag. I moved from Canon to Sony and thought that this (and the 28mm f/2) would be a inexpensive way to start moving my prime lens collection over and finally kick the adapters. Wrong. Overpriced.

May 30, 2016

This lens has the feature set of a $150 AUD lens - except that it's $450 AUD. I wouldn't pay half that for it. Distracting bokeh at 2.8 or smaller (7 aperture blades), build quality like a lens a quarter of the price, loud focusing motor, and slow AF which only gets slower when stopping down as a result of the iris closing during acquisition. A disappointing release for something that is supposed to be a 'budget' lens.

IQ is good in most cases. Bokeh is excellent , but it is slow to focus and noisy ! I returned it to explore other options (Zeiss or Sigma).

Good lens but noisy

May 25, 2016

Good image quality and good price for FE lens. Extremely noisy, which could impact videomakers. Build quality is inferior to Sony SEL50F18 (APS-C), which has metal body, stabilization and is quitter.

Great value

May 23, 2016

The lens takes very clear pictures. I have taken about 200 with it, and it worked great. It performed well in low light and has a fairly fast focus. The only issue I have had is it seems to be a snug fit when threading the lens on the camera body (A7). It takes more force than my other lenses to snap into place. I'm hoping this works out over a few uses. The lens is very lightweight.

Slow autofocus

May 21, 2016

If you are expecting fast autofocus this is definitely not the lens to purchase. I'm hoping that a firmware update is on the way to correct the hunting even in AF-S mode. I don't shoot much in AF-C but I could not get the lens to focus in some situations. As a manual focus lens, the lens is very sharp, so if you shoot mostly in manual focus mode and only need occasional auto focus (like landscape photography) this might be a great value for money. I also found that the auto focus speed was better on my A6000 than my alpha7II, which surprised me.

Better than I expected

May 20, 2016

I bought it because I wanted a fast lens and for a Sony full-frame e-mount lens it was very affordable and no big loss if it didn't turn out. I have been so used to heavy zoom lenses that this very lightweight lens was a very nice change. The camera feels really nice in the hand and is very easy to carry. It feels great to carry the camera around with this lens. I tested it for night photography and it delivered great handheld shots at night and lights didn't flare out.

Good but not great

May 18, 2016

Received the Sony with excitement. Once I got to use it was surprised how it hunts for focus and the noise. That was quite a disappointment. Other than that I found the build solid, the focus ring and overall feel. The images were surprisingly sharp so can get over the bad focus.

Good, but not great

I've owned the Zeiss 55 1.8 and considering the prices I'd say this Sony 50 1.8 is more than a fair deal. Good looking bokeh and image quality. Very light.

nice lens but for what it does is too expensive.

May 18, 2016

its a nice lens very light because is made of plastic , fast lens 1.8 nice aperture but too slow for focusing , i purchased this lens because the price , i do not recommend this lens for people likes to have prime lenses , this lens makes noise too much noise when is focusing . this lens its real cost should be $150 or $175 this lens should be a kit lens not prime lens , but after all you can take good picture is sharp and it does it job very slow and noisy but works . this lens is for common people not for PROs.

AF Slow AF - hoping for a firmware update

May 17, 2016

The biggest complaint about this lens in its short time since its release has been autofocus - speed and sound. I'm using it on an A7II, and the focus speed is really, REALLY slow. In this way, I'm surprised (and skeptical) that I read so many pre-release reviews claiming quick AF. It's not. Not even close. I've been using older Minolta AF lenses (50mm f1.4 and f1.8) via the LA-EA4 adapter, and they are notably faster. I'm holding out for a firmw... Show More

Great lens for the money

May 17, 2016

I am very happy with this lens. The image quality is outstanding. I am sure if you did some close scrutiny of images comparing it to more expensive lens there will be a difference but it will probably be minor. I can't emphasize enough how happy I am with the image quality. The only downside I have seen with the lens is that it can hunter for focus in autofocus. It is also slower then more expensive lens in autofocus. So if you are doing photogra... Show More

Sharp but slow focus

May 17, 2016

This lens is a great value for the money. It focuses slower than my FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA lens and I expect that with a lens that costs $500 less. But the focus is sharp - especially at F4 or higher. The lens is mostly plastic and it feels that way. But for $250 I wouldn't expect anything else. If you're in the market for a f1.8 prime this is a good deal.

Nice inexpensive alternative

May 17, 2016

Focus motor noise was a killer for me. The noise and the slow search made it somewhat unusable for me. If I were using it for more composed shots the noise or speed wouldn't matter. As far as the image quality.... I didn't own it long enough to test. I am told it's quite good.

Ok lens with some drawbacks...

May 17, 2016

For the price, it's pretty nice little compact prime.. Nice bokah at 1.8-2.0, nice color rendition, light and compact... The major drawback is very slow autofocus as everyone already mentioned, and that is due to mechanical geared focusing mechanism, so unfortunately I doubt the firmware update will fix this... If you can live with slow autofocus, it's not a bad lens overall...

TERRIBLE

May 11, 2016

What makes me extremely upset is when companies try to get as much as possible out of their customers in such a painfully obvious way. Sony does it with its poor batteries that require you to buy 5-6 and a grip. That is what sony is doing with this lens. The image quality is good, but the autofocus is TERRIBLE... So terrible that it doesn't even work while in video mode. This lens causes the camera to go to manual focus when in video. WHY???? Cau... Show More

May 11, 2016

I have a Sony A7, focuses quick and is accurate. It's more than usable at 1.8, didn't notice any bad fringing or softness. In low light it does slow down, but my copy never hunts. Also more importantly it doesn't backfocus. Many of my previous FE lenses would always backfocus. Only thing I don't like about the lens is the noise, it's almost as loud as the Canon 50mm 1.8 II. I was hoping it would be quiet like the STM one. If it was, it would have... Show More
