Sharp and versatile

Sep 12, 2019

Three speeds power zoom, zooms smoothly in manual, with just the right amount of resistance, but you must first turn off servo for manual or you might damage the gear. Zoom rocker is variable. Stabilzation is great. Uses battery power off the camera body. A little heavier than the the non-power version. Housing is very sturdy.

Great optics

Apr 28, 2019

Excellent optics; used on a Sony A6500. I have used it primarily for stills, but the zoom servo (3 speeds) is smooth and quiet. Great travel all purpose lens. BUT, it is quite heavy, especially for a light APC, mirrorless camera, and, inexplicably, Sony put the servo on the bottom of the lens so tripod support of the lens is difficult and the camera cannot sit on a flat surface.Pictures below from a motoring sailboat.

Good zoom lens with two great design flaws

Dec 1, 2018

This is probably the next best super zoom to the Sony 24-240mm lens, plus it has servo zoom. At 18mm there is noticeable fisheye but not a deal breaker. This is not a power zoom lens like the f/4 ones. This is simply a smaller version of the 24-240mm (the front element extends when zooming, and the lens tube is split into two parts to make the length of the physical casing shorter) with a servo motor attached. Thats a step down from the power zo... Show More

Great, versatile, good AF

Sep 20, 2018

Works with the rocker on the VG30, or use the lens rocker with VG20 or Sony DSLR such as A6300. AF is not too fast, not too slow and there is a nice resistance on the zoom ring when set to manual. Does have some weight to it, though. 18-200 is an impressive range and makes for a great video lens, especially when shooting a stage with good light. This is not a full-frame lens.

Waste of money

Sep 6, 2018

I initially bought this lens along with the Sony Nex VG 900 camera body. Both items worked really good together until...Pretty soon after the warranty expired the lens broke (something with the motor inside). I sent it to Sony service to be fixed and they told me it's not worth fixing it since it will cost a lot. I liked the combo (camera+lens) so I bought a second one. The second one I have is still running but not perfectly. The lens mechanism ... Show More

You get what you pay for.

Trade offs. Nice price, and good zoom range, but a SLOW lens (exposure wise). At f/3.5-6.3 max appeture you're going to find you're having to push the camera gain farther and more often than you like. Also, the power zoom does not engage smoothly and is not continuously variable (I find myself often disengaging the gear and turning the zoom ring by hand). Then again, you're not paying $3,700 for a Fujinon T2.9 or nearly $10K for a Zeiss T2.9... So, as my Grandad used to say, "You pays yer nickle and takes yer choice!"

Extremely versatile!

After about six months of use in a wide variety of situations, this lens has proven to live up well to its all-in-one intent. This is the one that lives most of the time on the front of my a6000 camera. My uses are typical family events, travel, and kids' sports. Nobody pays me to take photos, so my perspective is that of an enthusiastic hobby photographer. One good super-zoom has proven to be a good choice over buying and carrying multiple othe... Show More

Jumps when engaging zoom

Aug 30, 2017

Had hi hopes for this lens because of the focal range at a good price. The focus was just OK. I felt the power zoom was unusable. Because the motor has to externally extend the lens it sticks when it starts. This causes a noticeable verticle jump at the beginning.

Mostly Great, so far

Feb 20, 2017

So far I have done only one shoot - at a education function in a gymnasium. When unboxing the lens, it appeared so large compared to the two kit lenses that came with the Sony A6000 that I thought I had picked the wrong lens. It is relatively big and heavy. The supplied rectangular sun hood makes it seem even larger. However, it fit the camera body and seemed to work in my few test shots. So take it to the gym. It has a powered zoom, with three z... Awesome lens.

Nov 13, 2016

This lens is really amazing. I got it to replace my Sony 18 to 105 because I wanted to have control over the speed of the zoom. The zoom speed on the 18 to 105 is Really fast and is 2 to 3 times faster than the zoom speed on the 18-200. I honestly wish the fastest zoom setting was a little bit faster. But the lens is sharp and the image stabilization is amazing. You can hand hold at 200. The auto focus is slightly slower than the 18 to 105 but still works really well.

Great multi-purpose lens

Oct 27, 2016

Large diameter collects more light making this a good lens for low light shooting. I have used it both on my full frame A7 as well as my APS VG30. Nice focal range, smooth operation and virtually silent motor makes it ideal for videographers as well as still shooters. Good solid feel but that big servo motor means it's not the lightest lens in the bag. As good as many primes in its price range.

I will buy it again.

I just used with my Sony A7, in my daughter high school ceremony graduation, its excellent to shoot photos and video.

I've been using this lens with my FS-100 (and more recently FS7) for a while. It's my go-to for handheld don't know what's going to happen next shots because it can roll with just about any situation. It has so many things going for it. Image stabilization is strong, AF is decent, the zoom range is huge, and the image is consistently sharp. It's also par focal, except while zooming, when it will go soft momentarily before settling. The zoom servo... Show More

Easy to mount, quiet motor, sharp images - a quality lens, but oh so slow to zoom. What was Sony thinking? Still, overall, it's a keeper.

Quality lens with smooth motorized zoom

May 23, 2014

I purchased this lens to extend the focal range of my Sony NEX-6 that I originally purchased with an 11-18 mm ultrawide angle lens. I tried out the lens under some of the worst conditions in an interior museum gallery with no windows and no supplemental lighting and no tripod. The lens was still able to autofocus even with an ISO setting of 12,800. The motorized zoom was virtually silent although a bit slower than I expected. My other issue with ... Show More

Use for commercials, documentary and interviews on my Sony FS-700. Sharp and great focal length range. Not very fast but great all in one. For low light situations I use an Metabones speed booster adapter with Nikon prime lens. All together a perfect kit that covers all my needs in terms of lens. Sharper and better color and geometrical corrected than expected.

Zoom for NEX videos

Jul 10, 2013

I have used this lens both for still and video NEX cameras. The most recent use was for July 4th fireworks photography. This is a high resolution lens, although the Sony manual zoom lens of the same focal length appears to have at least as high a resolution, and is less expensive. The lens appears to be made solidly. However, it is heavy compared to the NEX video camera bodies. It takes some practice to learn balancing the video camera in hand, b... Show More

I got the NEX-7 plus the Zeiss 24mm in Jan 2012, and have been using both a lot since as a supplement my Canon DSLR gear. I have been very pleased with both for both stills and video - low light performance is especially impressive. At family/sporting events, however, an NEX with a superzoom is much more practical than a DSLR and/or juggling primes, which means you will capture moments (in remarkably sharp detail) that you would otherwise miss, w... Serious AF issues pass 150mm

May 20, 2013

Well over all it is good lens, but with FS100 once you pass 150mm zoom then AF can easily be fooled specially if have brighter background, so can't really rely on AF, otherwise its a good lens.

Very Pleasantly Surprised!

May 16, 2013

I wanted a GOOD tele zoom. I have a third party tele zoom lens that I had hoped would work well. It was a disappointment. This lens is more than I was hoping for. Great color, exceptionally sharp photos and more. On 24MP files digital zooming in Lightroom means I doubt I'll ever need a longer zoom. And it covers wide angle exceptionally well too! Other than the lens hood being a little funky (I believe its made more for movies than still shots), I have no complaints and I'm VERY HAPPY I spent a few extra bucks to get this lens!
