OK, so the corners are soft, as some reviewers noted. Other than that, can anyone tell the difference from lenses costing multiples of this one? Maybe at the pixel level. My first choice was Sigma 10-20/ 3.5 in Alpha mount and Alpha/ E mount adapter. When I saw how that lens dwarfs the NEX body, I decided to give a chance to this fixed focal length pancake. If it did not meet my IQ expectations, I would have returned it. After dozens of test shot... Show More

Disappointing for a prime
I use NEX3 with 16/2.8 to supplement my primary Olympus E-3 with Zuiko 12-60. Mostly urban and landscape photos, documentary rather than pretty postcards. At least half of them made at the widest available angle. So far all my Sony experience, around 200 shots, was in broad daylight @ ISO 200. Both Sony 16/2.8 and Zuiko at 12 mm are equivalent to 24 mm, but owing to 3/2 frame format and different distortion pattern, real-world photos from Sony ar... Show More

A sized lens for the NEX body
The first thing that comes to my mind is that this lens isn't for every one, and surelly not for everything, the focal lenght corresponds to a wide angle so this should be observed. To have an idea, is like the focal length from a cell phone and sometimes is too wide. It has a f2.8 lens, so many would think this would help in low light, this is true but only by 2/3, and the same (or better) effect could be done by having a f3.5 and setting a high... Show More

Must have for NEX 5
It's perfect in all other aspects. AF is really fast. Almost weightless and the size is very well balanced on the Nex. The build is great, feels solid as it looks. Manual focusing ring (electronically coupled, not mechanical) is as smooth as the best manual focus lenses out there. From my experience: @f2.8, center sharpness is great, which all that is needed for blurring out backgrounds and/or available light shots. In real-world practice, I've n... Show More

This lens is o.k.
I purchased the Sony 16mm because I wanted to try boththe Sony fisheye attachment and extra wide angle adapter on my A6000. Decent stuff, not Leica, but o.k. for around the house. The small size, sharpness of the lens is definitely worth the price. The extra wide angle good for family shots, street scenes, a fun clicker. Fisheye attachment definitely worth its light weight. I paid 4 times more for the Lumix fisheye. I feel the Sony does just as w... Show More

Great lens, awesome delivery time!
I love the wide angel for weddings and I have a feeling from this experience I will absolutely love it for real estate! It seems to be very sharp. I have only used it a couple of times so still getting used to it, but I bought it because of the reviews I read about it being sharp and a great length. I did notice a tiny bit of distortion when I got really close to my subjects as opposed to being a good distance. It tends to be soft on the edges at... Show More

Sony 16mm Lens
I found this lens to be quite lovely. It's great for street, landscape, and travel photography. It's also wonderful to shoot indoors in tight spaces. If you like wide angle, you like this lens. Yes, it's got some barrel distortion, but this isn't a Leica lens! It's considered a kit lens. So, it's pretty nice for a fast kit lens. Also, there were tests done on sharpness and this lens came out with high reviews. It's not quite compact like a true p... Show More

Useful
I purchased this as a compact alternative to the 18-55mm lens that came packaged with my Sony NEXC3. My hope was that it could be a lens that took advantage of the compactness of the NEXC3's body frame. While the lens is limited mostly to landscapes as it is a fixed wide angle lens, it does perform that function admirably. What withholds a 5 rating is that the lens was a little thicker and heavier than I thought it would be based on the internet photo. The most comfortable way to shoot is still with one hand holding the lens and one on the body of the camera.

Awful lens
Sony usually is pretty dependable for quality, but this doesn't deserve the Sony name at all. Yes, it's tiny and it does autofocus and might be alright for video, but it's pretty terrible for photos. It's as soft as a newborn kitten. I'd recommend Sony redesign this lens and seek to replace these ones with a trade-in policy. For photos this is unacceptable in quality (and I am not that demanding on my resolution). I've never been so disappointed with a lens. I'd recommend something else. Sigma's 19mm comes to mind. Good luck.

Beautiful Wide Angle
As a Canon user, I purchased this lens as a gift for a friend and got the chance to use it on a walk on the High Line. It takes gorgeous photos, with limited distortion. Obviously, if you've got a Sony, your lens options for this new camera are limited, but this one is light and easy to use. Plus, it is beautiful. I can't speak as to how long it will last, but I know Sony has made strides in quality lenses. Of course, I've heard they also sell a mount to fit to Canon or Nikon lenses, which would maximize your lens options.

You may not take this lens off
This lens has changed the way I take photographs. I have a Sony Alpha APS-C DSLR and I use the NEX mostly for times when I need the space or alongside the Alpha to take advantage of situations the NEX handles more efficiently, like wide-angle shots with this lens or Panoramic mode. This lens is very good at f/2.8 and magnificent at f/22 if you can pull it off. The only con I can come up with is that it has a lot of little nooks and crannies that dust can get into, but it doesn't affect the pictures.

Nice lightweight prime
This is great if you're looking for the lightest weight option. Photos are just like others have said, best if you stop the lens down to f8 or so. Although using it wide open for most people is fine. I use this lens mainly with the wide converter, which adds size and weight. But this was a much cheaper option than the 10-18 sony or 12 zeiss. It's good enough for me, and I typically blow the photos up pretty large, 20x30 or 36x48. Quality is plenty good for that.

let's be honest here
Let's be honest here. it's a piece of junk. At 2.8 this lens is absolutely useless. I got a chance to spend some time walking around and snap some shots and was nothing but disappointment. At 5.6 the edges / corners are getting better but they're smeared anyway. It's not good even considering price / value factor. Sony Nex5N is a decent camera and in IMHO deserves some better lens. Come on Sony! You can do it! (At least I hope so)

Very handy and compact wide angle for Sony A6000
I get some really good use out of this lens, and combine it with the ultra-wide converter when needed. I am happy with the results, but the more I use it the more I notice the loss of sharp detail around the edges of the photo. I'm not sure if that is something to be expected out of a wide angle lens. In general I've been very happy with all of my Sony products (a6000, 50mm F1.8, 16mm F2.8, and ultra wide converter).

Great Little lens
I have the 18-55 kit lens, and it is really quite good. Bought this one for travel to switch on my NEX-7 in the evenings. Great for dim street scenes and photographing meals in dim restaurants. Slightly wider than the kit lens and a bit faster at the widest zoom on the kit lens. ALos bought the wide angle accessory lens and this creates a really nice ultra wide, but not distorted fisheye field of view. Very pleased!

A Match made in Heaven!
Image quality and performance of my specific 16mm SEL16F28 f/2.8 lens exceeded my expectations. Fon Indoor, Outdoor, architectural, portrait, large-subject photography and video- this lens is a match made in heaven for the NEX-5N camera/camcorder! Image quality is comparable to that of more expensive, major brand lenses I own within the 16mm range. I'm super pleased with my copy of the 16mm, Sony SEL16F28 lens! VM

Awesome camera
I am an amateur photo enthusiast and this is a great step up from a point and shoot. Takes great pictures in all modes, very easy to navigate the menues, and the sensor is awesome. the only draw back is that the HDR isn't available in all modes and RAW isn't available in some modes as well. Other than that this is a great little camera. Solid construction and the 16mm is great for capturing landscape images.

Does the job
For the NEX series, this lens is a must-have for any shoot. The distortion level and glass quality is about what you'd expect in a $300 lens. Nothing outstanding, but nothing horrible either. A go-to lens when available light is too low for the included tele lens. Works better than adapted Alpha-series with NEX automatic features, but I understand that will change with the next NEX firmware upgrade.

Small Form Factor A Big Plus
Put this on my A6500 and I am very pleased so far. Fast, sharp and AF has worked pretty well so far. Does not seem to want to sync up with the touch screen focus....but that may just be my set up. I will need to look into that more. The whole set up is almost pocket size and is very unassuming. This is definitely my go-to lens for my next vacation and family stuff. (On the 6500 the 16mm = 24mm

Best Digital Camera System Ever
I'm a die hard film user and have looked for years for a compact digital camera system. Finally, the search is over. The NEX is here. This lens gives you just that extra bit of coverage that an 18mm lens does not cover. Sturdy, lightweight, compact and so sharp. The photo quality is A+. I assure that if you are willing to make the investment, you will not be disappointed.

This is only ok
I was looking for a fast wide angle, so I bought the 16mm+ultra wide converter for my a6000. Image quality is only ok. I was hoping for something much sharper. I wish the sharpness was closer to that of the sony sel 35mm f/1.8 prime (which I love). Also, to my eyes, the silver lens looks a little strange on the black body, but would be a non-issue if the IQ were better.

As compact as they come.
A decent effort on Sony's part to make their NEX as pocketable as possible. There's a slight pin cushion effect, which is opposite what you usually get with wide angles, and makes for a rather different feel to the shots. Your opinion my vary, but I like it. There's no image stabilization in the lens, however, so you have to be careful to be steady.

Only pancake lens for NEX
I bought this lens because at the moment this is the only pancake lens for the NEX and I wanted to have the option to make my kit as small as possible for my bike rides. The optical quality is average and not up to the NEX-5N's sensor but the lens is cheap and also, the Sony fisheye and wide angle converters are only compatible with this lens.

simple optics laws...
If the amount of glass on the lens rivals what you find on a cellphone camera then the resulting pictures are going to look like what you can get on a cellphone. Simple as that. This is definitely going to kill your APS-C capabilities. If all you can carry around is this on your a6000 then you are probably much better off with an RX100III.
