Easter Choir Miking

Used this mic along with another one that I already owned to mic a 20 person choir on Easter morning. Our contemporary Praise and Worship band usually runs around 98 db on stage so I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get the choir above the music. I was wrong. The mics have a tight focused pattern that let me really zero in on the choir without picking up a lot of stage noise. My gain before feedback was great with hardly a squeak of feedback and I had to really push them to get that. Didn't use much eq at all. On of the best small diaphram mics I have ever used. The Shure SM137 is very clear and flat, and with a controllable proximity effect. The flat frequency response in particular makes this a superb performer as far as versatility goes, being well suited to most applications in a studio style setting. As far as small diaphragm condensers go, this is as accurate as any, and with the Shure brand it's most certainly hardy. Also an excellent price for a very professional microphone.

My favorite mic in the studio was always the Shure BG 4.0, but when it shot south, I knew that I could never be happy with anything less. If I could find one not-battery-operated, even better. The SM 137 exceeded my expectations. Noise-free, clear, natural sound. I expected to get the most advantage from my acoustic guitar, but this afternoon I used it in tandem with an SM 58 to record amplified electric. Wow. What I've been missing the last few years. It helps that I am finally recording in 24 bits, but still. I'm quite happy.

Shurely built and robustly, too. So far only used for some close-mic acoustic guitar recording but hope to use it also for 'live' sound reinforcement sooner than later. The windscreen may come in handy then. Compared to an SM-57 it's a little brighter without the mid-range boost which is to be expected from a condenser mic.

If you can't afford the SM81, this is a great substitute for it as a drum overhead or hi hat mic. Sounds great live or in the studio.
