Roland OCTA-CAPTURE - High-Speed USB Audio Interface

I bought this interface to use for home recording projects. With my previous setup I was constantly moving cables and headphones. The OctaCapture allows me to keep everything plugged in, and my headphones in one place. The control panel is very flexible yet easy to use. Driver is top notch. Simple install, low latency, and very stable. I am getting lower latencies than I would have ever expected with my previous M-Audio setup. Integration with Windows into Sonar is seemless. If you use Sonar, this is the interface for you. I run a variety of inputs into this interface ranging from electronic drums, bass amp, guitar amp, bass direct, guitar direct, midi inputs, and mics. The autosense leveling makes switching between inputs seemless. Ability to send different monitoring signals to different outs is excellent. Also can make for interesting combinations when using as interface into Pod Farm or Guitar Rig. With the low latency driver I am able to run direct in guitar, mod guitar sound in software, and output straight back to amp. I have had this unit for a little over a month now and I would purchase this interface again. Great experience. Have not had to deal with Roland support, however active development continues as there are new patches out recently. One thing I would recommend is to ground the unit. There is a screw on the back of the chassis for running a grounding wire. I had a slight hum on my inputs, I attributed to a dirty electrical environment in my home office/studio. After running grounding wire, all interference from other equipment seems to have dissappeared. My friends and fellow musicians have a hard time believing how great it sounds for the price. Great bang for the buck. ... More

I bought this several months ago when I was putting my recording studio together. I hadn't looked into all the other things it could do such as being able to send mixes out to band members during a live show. I'm still learning the finer points of it but it was super easy to get it up and running with very little knowledge of what I was doing. There's a manual that's easy to understand but the basic functions are intuitive. I've had zero problems with it and am actually kind of impressed that I lucked into picking out a great AI when the selection was overwhelming. I went with the Roland because of the number of inputs and their name brand is trustworthy. Now I am not so wet behind the ears (unless I've been wearing headphones all day LOL) and would absolutely recommend this to anyone needing multiple inputs. I feel that this will probably last me a very long time. It's rack mounted and does not overheat. The software was easy to install on Windows 10 and fired right up. My computer hasn't had an issue with it either. The only thing I will say, and I'm not sure if this is a driver problem or a windows quirk, is if you have been, like, listening to music or watching YouTube and the computer falls asleep, you have to wake it up again before you can use the external synths or whatever is connected to the AI before it will play. Otherwise if the computer is turned off completely, it will still pass through sound to the speakers, so you can use it without having to boot up the computer. ... More

I bought the Octa-capture to record my acoustic nylon guitar. I use two microphones, and send the signals to my tube pre-amp, then to the Octa-capture. Octa-capture drivers installed easily on Windows 7(64). Reaper immediately recognized Octa-Capture. Octa-Capture has a clear, serviceable LCD. Octa-capture's knob-plus-LCD commands are easy for me to understand and perform. Instruction manual is written by a competent writer. It is clear and helpful. Octa-capture operates simply (really, this is my first interface, and within one hour, I unpacked the box, installed the software, selected Octa-capture as Reaper's output device, and recorded music). NO latency! Reaper recorded exactly what I heard. Sounds beautiful. The XLR/1/4 combination jacks give me many options. The eight OUTPUTS give me many options. I love having some inputs on Octa-capture's front, and some on Octa-capture's back. The included USB cable is about 7' long. The unit is small and light, yet seems well made. ... More

Haven't had a chance for any serious work with it yet. Hooked up to both Macs fine (black MacBook, Mac Pro); note that you're required to install the Roland driver for the Mac to recognize it. Successfully recorded 4 simultaneous tracks with both machines, with both GarageBand and Logic. The reverb is basic, but sounds good. Missed the fact that it doesn't have EQ- it acts like a mixer, with compression and efx, so you'd expect at least minimal EQ. The computer-based control panel is easy to use. The front panel... not so much. It's pretty good, but the button and knob functions and use are not immediately intuitive or obvious. ... More

I replaced a Edirol/Roland FA-101 (Firewire 10x10) with this box. Great decision! This box is built like a tank (all metal), and fairly easy to use. It's great having a volume knob for the monitor speakers *and* the phones, which was missing on most previous models. The digital patch bay and 4 mix profiles mean you can route the audio any way you like.

I am using this interface for audio in and out for recording and home entertainment. The Octa-Capture was the easiest piece of audio hardware I have ever installed. The drivers seem very stable. I am playing software synths at very low latency and recording input from condenser and dynamic mics, plus a keyboard and guitar. I am routing the outputs to monitor speakers, headphones and amps. This was all very easy to setup in the hardware, on the included mixer program and in my DAW program. The preamps are clean and have plenty of gain, even for my SM-57 that usually needs an extra boost in my experience. ... More

I had one of these already and have been happily using it for months. I bought this one to slave to the other unit and give me 16 channels of input/output. Other than a still unresolved glitch somewhere that won't let me play back channels 1 and 2 on the 2nd unit, it's working well. The Octa-Capture just does what it's supposed to do with very low latency. Coupled with Cubase Elements It's the best multi-channel recording environment I've ever used. I wouldn't recommend using it with anything less than an i3 or i5 level quad core processor though. Most of the complaints I've seen on the internet are by people with older/slower dual core processors. ... More

Good multichannel input interface for acoustic measurement and sound system testing. Good multichannel output/playback interface for laboratory or presentation use. AISO drivers & control panel work very well and integrate with DAW software under Windows 7 64-bit. Direct mixer and virtual patch panel features are very powerful, but not well documented in the manual. Allow extra time to configure and test this device! Front-panel controls can adjust all parameters, but are typically cumbersome; use the software control panel instead.

With hardly cracking the manual I was able to do a 6 mic drum recording using the auto sense feature on the octa capture. Part of the setup I used two condenser mics which required phantom power. It was easy to get this going. It also shows on the display which mics are using phantom...any of the 8 inputs can be used for this. I did read that it's best to run the kick drum through channel 7 or 8 being able to handle it best with extra headroom. The sound capture is authentic to the source which is why I love this unit. I own a Roland edirol handheld recorder and know Roland products are rock solid. This device appears to be rock solid too. I was fortunate to find a used one in mint condition on Reverb so I got it at a great price. No regrets on this purchase whatsoever. ... More

I purchased the Octa-Capture back in 2013 and it is still my go to interface! What's not to love about this interface? Is pretty small and light! The auto input feature is pretty cool if you are a drummer and need to record yourself for example (like my case). It comes with a computer software that is pretty cool where you can control pretty much everything, the preamps, rout the inputs and outputs digitally, make sub mixes, add reverb, each channel has a digital compressor and gate, for the price this interface is a great great deal! I've travelled with it to several countries and this thing is rock solid! Highly recommended! ... More

Had a chance to compare Octa-Capture and Focusrite 18i8. Although, Roland's interface was more compact, had more features and looked fancier, I went with Focusrite. Comparing the two, Scarlett 18i8 had more gain (important in case of Shure SM7B mic) and was less noisy. It was rather disappointing to hear Octa-Capture's very pronounced noise though SM7B mic wasn't close to its normal level.

Outdated, but works well.

It's a bit outdated since there's better options available for the money. Roland should really lower their prices on this one, no one should buy it brand new. It works well, and has 8 inputs in a small footprint. The auto-gain feature is handy, and the display/menu-system is small but nice. Using it on a Windows 10 device, driver works well. If you find a used one for a great price, it's worth getting! Otherwise, there's other products with comparable features for quite less money.

If you're looking for a great, easy to use interface that actually sounds good, look no further. Eight Mic Preamps, EACH with selectable +48v and High Pass (most units in this price range make you do phantom power in banks of 4 preamps). It's portable, but it's also rack mountable. Super easy to get the gain set on the unit and the LCD makes visual inspection of levels great.
