Nearly worthless

Jun 16, 2019

I couldn't get a sharp image out of this lens at any aperture or any focal length. Maybe mine was a bad copy, maybe I expected too much. Maybe it's all the plastic. Shelled out for the Oly 12-40 f/2.8 Pro, which is so sharp you could hurt yourself.

Solid with one surprising strength

Mar 9, 2019

Like most users I got this as a kit lens and its fine in adequate light. But I played with the focus settings and found that in manual mode on my G7 you can use the touch-screen focus button or set the AF/AE button to autofocus and its remarkably quick to grab focus; Ive experimented a fair bit and it hasnt hunted once. Seems to be accurate when zoomed in. My other native lens, the Panny 20mm 1.7, is noticeably slower. No explanation but will look into this.

Good budget lens, but you will want to upgrade soon

Oct 12, 2018

If you are just getting started out this is a great cheap lens. But you will quickly want a better lens as this one is nothing special. It has a great range at 14-42mm which is close to the $900 12-35mm f2.8 Panasonic lens but at 1/3rd the cost. It's super small and light, but thats really where my positives end. Cons Worst part of this camera by far is the autofocus! Now I know the GH5 has "poor autofocus" but I cant get very useable... Show More

Super, compact lens for video and stills.

Jan 29, 2018

First of all, everyone should own this lens, but if you have a chance to pick it up for a bit extra as a kit *definitely* go for it. It is better than the version one as well as the 14-45. Small, compact, light, sharp, great color, great coatings, great microtextures. OK, my 42.5 prime is sharper, but not bu much. I use it for professional videography. I really didn't want to buy it, then I really didn't want to use it, but I threw it on during a... Show More

Nice but limited stabilization

Dec 30, 2017

Like others have said, it's a nice little walkaround or starter lens. I got it as a kit lens on a G7 and usually use the 1.7 20mm pancake instead, but the 14-42 is certainly nice and sharp and a good general performer. One caveat I'd offer is that the stabilization seems to be an older technology that certainly helps with hand shake but the combination of the G7 and this lens doesn't give you the dramatic near-Steadicam effect I've found with other options. So don't literally walk the lens around while you're shooting expecting the stabilizer to make it look smooth, and you'll be fine. : )

Surprisingly good for video.

Aug 18, 2017

I needed a decent low price zoom lens for a video project and this pretty much fit the bill. Incidentally, I also needed a decent lens for taking pictures. I'm a cinematographer by trade and normally prefer to use prime lenses. When I do use zoom lenses for video I normally prefer ones with constant aperture. Yet even so, this lens managed to deliver really good images. It's also really good for photos. It's a good starter lens and a good quick alternative for videos. Not my first choice but still a good one.

Nice Lens - I like it better than Olympus 14-42 II or IIR

Mar 7, 2017

Bought this as replacement for 6-year-old Olympus 14-42 II lens that broke. I hope the newer Oly 14-42 IIR may have fixed the point of failure on the Oly II (internal electronic cable that eventually breaks from repeated extension/rotation). That said about the Oly lenses, so far I love this Panasonic Lumix. Unlike the Oly, it has a metal mount. Unlike the Oly it doesn't have to be retracted for storage and extended for use and is no bigger than ... Show More

Great lens for the cost

Oct 5, 2016

This is a great starter lens when you don't want to shell out almost two thirds of your body cost on glass. it's light and versatile. at 14mm it's great for up and close interviews or capturing emotional reactions and even the 42mm that is somewhat limited with a 5.6 f stop still works in properly lit environments. not amazing for quick zooms.

Excellent for the price

Jun 16, 2016

If you're looking for standard shots on a micro four thirds camera this is an excellent lens to have on a budget. I am using it on a BMPCC as a general use lens, so it's size is very convenient. There are much better lenses out there; this one is of course missing a powered stabilizer, but for this price I am happy with the purchase for what I use.

Nice entry level lens

Feb 23, 2016

The GX 8 camera is superb, and the lens is a very cost effective way to get excellent photos. Obviously,at the low price it is not a fast lens.

not awful, not great

I have both this lens and the 14-45 zoom. This lens flares much too easily, even with the lens hood in place. You simply cannot shoot against the light with this lens. Otherwise it's a reasonable performer.

Good Standard Lens

Dec 30, 2015

If you get this lens with a kit purchase you will have a very good standard lens; the image quality is as good as the Pana. 14-45 (or very nearly). But the 14-45 is longer and heavier. This lens won't provide the IQ of the Oly 12-40 Pro (the best 4/3 lens I own), but this lens is one-third the price and about 1/3 the weight. For non-critical uses I like this small, light, good-enough lens. This lens outperforms the the tiny pancake standard zooms... Show More

OK but too much flare

Dec 11, 2015

This lens is reasonably sharp and a decent performer as long as bright light sources are well outside the frame. Even if the sun is fairly high overhead, bad flare can result if the sun is in front of the camera. OK for a cheap kit lens. The 14-45 is a considerably better performer (I have both).
