Very reliable
When I first purchased my laptop, I was worried about what kind of external driver I needed to purchase along with it; for the simple fact that I did not want to carry extra weight. Very loud and really slow; Spend the extra $
I bought the ASUS SDRW-08D2S when I had to replace the CD writer in my computer after I knocked the loader off track which caused it to be inoperable. I don't use the CD/DVR a lot so I went for this inexpensive option. Sadly it has common characteristics with my old car. That is to say it is very loud and really slow. Sure it gets the job done, but I shouldn't have been as cheap as I was and spent the extra $20.00 for a better option.

Won't use it with my Mac products
This product I could not use with my Macbook. Downloaded the software and tried to play movies and it was skipping and freezing the entire time. But my primary use was for burning CDs of pictures to give to clients and it was a fail. Ended up going with the Mac version! So much simplier and smooth. I am sure it would work great with a PC but this, in my experiene, was not easy to use and did not work properly on my Mac.

it works, ok, but...
but...not too good for wav audio... compared to western digital models, pioneer models, etc.. it works, but the Sound Quality is quite harsh, and very digital ...like the 1980s cds... so i dont recommend for those wanting to make music wav disks on cd-r on this thing... get a better sounding cd writer... they are NOT all the same as u know by now. hopefully.... thanks

Not for a everyone
I bought this product mainly for making music CD's to play in my car. This product is really lightweight and requires two hands to use. Was difficult to use the first time. No instructions for use included.Requires two slots of USB usage, caused the system to disable the slots on the monitor. I should not have expected a lot for such a little price.

decent , gets the job done
While it does what it is supposed to, it's loud and it did not come with the stand. So I have to place it flat and the vibration is enough while working to make my mouse move on its own. So basically it works but no stand,bit disappointed as I would have gotta something else if I knew it would be flat and not vertical. Shipping was fast ..

The CD/DVR player/burner in my husband's laptop suddenly quit. Not wanting to pay for either a replacement within the laptop or a new laptop, we opted for this very inexpensive and easy to use external DVD optical drive. It was a good purchase, works well, requires basically no installation, and is convenient to use. Recommended !

Well-Built And Easy To Use
This product looks slim, was easy to set up, and looks very nice with my new gaming rig. I needed an external drive because my case does not use one, meaning that it looks a lot sleeker on the front. This drive and my case.compliment each other very well. I have a good feeling that it will cause me very little problems if at all.

simple, easy to connect, works great
The reason I did not rate it five stars is some times on high end videos it gets a little noisy. For the price it is a great drive audio is excellent and data not a problem. I thought I could live without a disc drive on my netbook but I was wrong. This item is a great add on plus it is the same make as my computer.

Easy t use
Needed to have access to a CD for training modules at work, but did not want the bulk for day-to-day operations. Simple to install, simple to use. The unit comes with a pigtail adaptor that says if the unit will not run use two USB ports to power the unit. With the ASUS, it works great with only one USB port. .....

Attractive, well built, and cheap.
Purchased this external drive for a new Asus Ultrabook. It requires 2 USB connections (one for data and one for additional power) and it doesn't require a power supply brick, which is great. It's nice looking, but thicker and heavier than I expected. Plug and play with Windows 7 was painless. An excellent drive.

It works fine!
My Esternal DVD Writer (read/write) works fine. I just wish that the manufacturers of these external devices would create a more solid structure to the drawer, so that they would feel more like the 'on board' DVD RW devices. Kinda concerned that I might break off the drawer if not entirely flat on a desk.

Good DVD writer bad software
I did not check DVD writer thoroughly, but the software I loaded in windows 8.0 asus ultra book UX-32VD-DH71, casuses windows crash. Although I could recover my data. But unable to rectify my ultra book. So I will not recommend it for ultra book, please do not load software in windows 8.0 ultrabook.

Does its Job As Expected
I've used it a few times, and traveled with it once. It's very light, seems to be well built and is sturdy. It easily plugs and plays into my Asus laptop via its 2 USB 3.0 plus. It's been incredibly simple and trouble-free to use. If you're considering the purchase of this product I recommend it.

Nice looking, compact, functional
Used as an external/portable CD/DVD player/burner for several machines. Is instantly recognized by Windows 7 and is available for use in a matter of a few seconds after being plugged in. It needs two USB ports but no other external power source.

PC or Mac - works for me
Cheap and works, right out of the box. I needed a CD/DVD player for my Macbook Air and my Acer laptop. This worked fine on the first try on both. Have not tried to burn anything yet. Plastic seems frail, might not be good for heavy duty travels.

On my laptop my d: drive doesn't work anymore. So This is a nice, cheap alternative to taking it in to getting it repaired. Like the external hard drive that I use, I just use this instead. Does need to use 2 usb ports.

Flimsy, requires 2 usb ports, pop-out tray.
I guess for $$bucks I shouldn't complain; it does the job well. But it feels flimsy, takes up 2 USB ports and has a pop-out tray which is not sturdy at all. For iMac spend the extra$and get the Super Drive.

Works as Promised
I removed the DVD burner from the package, plugged in the USB cable, downloaded the set-up disc and within 15 minutes it was operating as advertised. Simple to use and economical to buy. I'm a happy guy!

works nicely but doesn't seem to be the sturdiest and once in a while becomes a bit slow or freezes shortly for no apparent reason. other than that no complaints. haven't tried burning with it yet...

Perfect accessory for an ultrabook
Perfect for installing software from our existing CD-ROMs, burning CD's, and uploading music from our CD collection. Kinda nice for watching DVD's, though not Blu-Ray.
