Much too slow; also a bit too heavy
The picture quality was great (tried with our A7 III). But, f/4.5-5.6 is too slow for this kind of price. I would rather sacrifice on zoom range (e.g., 200-400) than aperture. At least one stop quicker and it could be a reasonable deal, but at 5.6 with 400mm, you're just not getting a quick enough shutter speed for hand-holding in most occasions, meaning you will need to pick one of A) tripod (during day), B) risk hard-to-notice-u... Great Lens, nice reach
I did not do an extensive testing , just put it on my A7R3 and went by a lake to shoot swam and landscape. I like the detail I got on the photo ( in the Feathers of the black swam) and the stability built in . It is heavy compared to my 70-200 F4 Looking forward to test with my A6500

Nice lens
Very happy with this lens. Sharp throughout a the range. Turns out to be more versatile than I expected.

Tripod collar-locking knob broken after 3 outings
I won't comment on the optical qualities of this lens - many others have already done so, here and elsewhere. But I do want to comment on the build quality. After three outings, the "tripod collar-locking knob" has broken and will no longer loosen the tripod collar. It just turns and turns and turns and does nothing. So I can't rotate the lens back to the upright position on a tripod-it's stuck. I think I only used this knob twice and I seri... Show More

Excellent Lens
It is an excellent lens - IQ is crisp, AF is fast, It feels lighter than Canon 100-400 mm and about the same weight as Fujifilm 100-400. IS is good. I don't use zone or wide mode AF so I cannot comment about that. I also used it as a macro lens and it felt a bit inferior to Canon 100-400 (meaning real closeups of flowers and insects) . I wish it was a bit cheaper.

Fantastic Lens
I wanted a longer lens for wildlife and grandsons sports events. This lens is tac start. I was a little worried about the weight but am happy to say I can hand hold it just fine. It was be 74th birthday present to myself. Thanks Sony for finally coming up with a 100-400 lens!!

Great Gigantic Lens
Swapping from an APS-C camera outfit to a full frame outfit, I had to buy a new set of lenses and one of them being this model which the max focal length is close to the kit Nikon 55-300. That lens was light compared to this behemoth 3 lb'er. Other than that the performance is to be expected by most Sony products which is outstanding. The clarity is unmatched and the features it has built in , for example the OSS along with the camera's built in ... Show More

Has met my expectations
I've only had it for couple of weeks only done few tests. I was primarily concerned about the sharpness and the reach. Fstop and weight are not really that big of a factor for me as I anticipate using a tripod for the majority of my work. I also bought the 2x for this, so total reach is 800mm at f11. I was not disappointed looking at my first tests. Looking forward to using this more extensively.

Great lens
Not only is the lens great on a tripod, it is surprisingly good in handheld situations. The automatic focus works well when you take the time to ensure that you are set on your subject and not a limb or flower in the vicinity.

Wow!! Love this lens
This lens gives great color, background separation and Bokeh. Combined with my A7rIII it's amazing. I was looking for a super telephoto lens and have used the Tamron 150-600 with my Nikon d810, so when this came out I was afraid of not having the 600mm reach. But when I unboxed it and took it out for a shoot, I knew I made the right choice. This lens is so sharp that I can crop if needed and don't miss the 150-600mm at all. I takes some decent macros too!

Great for covering a wide range of telephoto shots
This is a wider lens than the Sony FE 70-200 f/2.8 that I also have, but it is roughly the same length. Despite the slower speed, it is the telephoto lens I now carry most often. Took photos of a graduation, pairing this lens with the A7RIII, and they were even better than I expected. Still love the 70-200 - the big benefit being speed - but if I had to choose between the 100-400 and the 70-200, I would choose the 100-400. Thought seriously about... Show More

Fast focus and sharp lens
I purchased this lens for photographing track and field. I have it on my a6300 and it works great. It acquires focus and locks onto the subject very fast. Highly recommend. It works great on the a6300, would love to try it on an a9.

Great lens performs as expected for a top of the line Sony lens
One potential problem. Your shipping instructions required a signature however UPS left the package on my front steps. This could have turned into a bad situation for you and me.

Excellent lens. Caution with the mounting foot.
I've been shooting birds with this lens plus the 1.4 x tele for about 5 months on an a6500. After going thru the process of fine tuning my technique and settings, I am very happy with the results I'm getting. I am a big fan of this lens. I am specifically posting this review to mention a minor issue that if not monitored, could cause a rather serious failure in the field. After five months of use I started to notice a little wiggle in the tripod... Show More

Great Zoom Lens for Wildlife!
Perfect match with a7III. Super fast and accurate focusing. Great sharpness. Not as heavy and big as an constant F4 aperture and with todays low light sensitiv Sensors (except Canons) there is no problem in lower light. Price ,but worth the money.

Great sharpness
Using this on an alpha 6000. Tends to occasionally search for focus and even lock up out of focus, requiring shutdown and restart. Otherwise, sharp photos.

Great lens for sports and wildlife
I am a long time Nikon shooter and do most of my professional sports photographer with a 200-400mm F4 lens. I just recently purchased the Sony Alpha 9 camera and needed this lens to go with it as it is the only longer telephoto lens available for this camera. It's focus is lightning quick on the Sony A9 and the range is wonderful. It had become my go to lens for shooting professional baseball. The bokeh is very good even though at 400mm you are s... Exactly the lens I need
I have recently switched from the Canon system to the Sony system, mainly due to weight. My favorite lens was my EF 100-400 IS USM II lens. I was so happy to find this lens, and it is just as great, (probably better), and lighter! I have only used it a week, but so far I love it and am able to capture great bird and bird in flight photos. As I get better with practice, I am sure this will be my favorite lens. Love it!

Awesome for sports
I already had the 70--200mm with the 2x converter for use on my A9 and thought this would be a redundant lens, but the ability to have the full range of 100-400 as opposed to 140-400mm makes a big difference. Much more than I would have guessed. For soccer at least, there are many occasions where the action gets up close and personal, and the ability to get down to a portrait length helps a great deal. In addition, the lens is sharp, has great detail, and quick focus. Color seems to be vivid as well.

Lots of options with this lens...
I am enjoying this new lens very much. As others have stated, it is sharp and the OSS makes handheld shots easy. What I've enjoyed the most is the variety of focal lengths that can be achieved using the crop-mode with the A7RIII in combination with the 1.4x teleconverter. Basically you can go from 100mm to 840mm -- plus even longer if you use ClearImage Zoom.

Excellent
With this on an a6500 and set to max zoom, I got an infocus (manually) and completely jitterless shot of a rocket launch from about 70 miles, hand-held. All parts of the craft are clearly visible. I was amazed. The image stabilization in the lens and in the camera must be working in concert. I measured it because I was shopping for a case. With the zoom barrel fully retracted, the distance from the lens surface that rests on the outside of the c... Show More

Sharp lens - good for perching birds
I use this lens with the Sony A7RII and it works great for perching birds - including small birds. I find that the lens is too slow to focus for capturing birds in flight. I use this lens with the 1.4x extender which does not impact the image quality. I find that I use automatic focus instead of manual focus on this distance.

Extremely sharp images without a tripod!
I rented this lens for a ten day period and shot hundreds of photos with it using my Sony a6300. With the lenses Steady Shot switch set to "Mode 1" I found it difficult to get tack sharp images without a tripod. However, with the switch set to "Mode 2" I was able to get incredibly sharp images at all apertures without a tripod. This lens is expensive but worth the price. This lens produces amazing detail.
