Really a Decent Little Kit Lens

Apr 17, 2015

This lens came bundled with my a6000, and I 100% agree with Mel S. This little lens does a fine job when shooting JPG's with in-camera processing. I have a few other Sony e-mount lenses, including the F1.8 50mm prime. Yes, that lens is better, but not astonishingly better when shooting JPG's. Images are a little sharper and color saturation is a little better, but the main advantage of the 1.8/50 is its low-light performance. However, this little kit lens is bit more versatile walk-around, courtesy of its motorized zoom, and it has the advantage of being much more compact.

Practical And Compact

Feb 28, 2014

I use this lens on an NEX C3. Barrel distortion and vignetting are gone by around 22mm focal length. I get that by touching the zoom control twice quickly. If you want to use 16mm, you can eliminate the distortion in post with an editing program such as Photoshop. I use this rig as an alternative to a bulky DSLR for casual pictures. It's reasonably sharp, especially in the center. Way out in the corners, there is some softening, but I accept the tradeoff. I use the standard flash (F7S) and also the external mic with the NEX, the latter to cut down on wind noise for video.

Small and usable, if well short of perfect

Mar 12, 2016

Got this with my brand new A6300. Very compact and lightweight (I'm used to a Nikon D800), and I like that I can turn the lens ring and get a very responsive zoom. Seems to take advantage of the extremely fast 6300 autofocus. It isn't as sharp as I would like, or as contrasty, but with software, I can crank up both, resulting in decent images. Sooner or later, I will try the 35mm or the 28mm Sony lenses (or perhaps one of the Sigma 30s) to see if they really are better. I've attached some photos that have been sharpened (and a couple have been cropped, as well)

Not Great, But a Workable Kit Lens

Dec 18, 2014

I bought this lens with the a6000 as a kit lens. While it's not the sharpest tool in the tool box it is workable. I will admit, wide open it's not good at all but it does seem to have a sweet spot in the f8 to f16 area and with a little sharpening in Lightroom or Photoshop it's actually pretty good. Take a look at the shots I uploaded. The first is a full frame shot with some sharpening in Lightroom and the second is a 100% crop of the same pic. Detail is better than I expected. So like I said, with a little post production sharpening it's not bad at all.

tiny lens good quality

Jan 18, 2018

Only have been using it for a week picked it up quick after my 16-70 shat the bed. I love how small it is, attached to a 6,xxx frame it's tiny and people don't realize your carrying such quality equipment allows for great candid opportunities. That being said I am hard on my equipment and this lens does not feel robust at all. I'm hoping it proves other wise. Already turned it on once and had it not focus correctly, turned it off and back on and focus came back, I hope this is not a issue that continues.

Not too bad

Mar 1, 2018

Honestly I'm surprised by how much I've been able to get out of this cheap little lens. It was the first Sony lens I ever purchased and it was old faithful for a solid couple of months. Perfect for gimbal use and a solid all around, just make sure you have enough light when you want to zoom in. Otherwise, I really can't complain for the price and convenience. The power zoom is pretty nice too & the manual focus ring isn't too much of a pain to use in situations when you can't rely on AF.

Light and collapsible

Oct 20, 2018

This E mount lens for SONY's 6000 class cameras (APS-C sensor) is convenient and flexible. While not the fastest of glass, nor the best contrast and sharpness, it is still very good -- enough for most travel and every day photos. The lens is small and collapsible, gives the 6000 series SONY the smallest body (with lens) with the biggest sensor ( APS-C ) you can get. With the lens collapsed, it fits into any jacket pocket. Pull it out to get a fully functional APS-C camera -- exceptional.

Surprisingly great!

Jul 22, 2013

This is a surprisingly good lens for the price. Very compact and flexible with a terrific stabilizer. It's not the sharpest lens and it does have some color issues especially in the wider focal lengths, but these are fair trade-offs considering it's price and size. Despite the quality issues, I've found that RAW images are very correctable and can produce excellent results. This is a surprisingly great one lens solution, especially for a light traveler.

Bought this with Sony a6000.Very disappointment after buying this kit lens..I am still not sure whether the camera is bad or kit lens..But seeing reviews from other..i can only suspect on kit lens for now.Yet to check with other lens and confirm the same..But very very disappointed after buying this..Neither can return it as B&H return policy days are also crossed, no option other keeping than keeping this and thinking to sell or buy another lens.

Good kit lens.

Jul 2, 2017

This lens is an is what it is. It's not as sharp as it could be but it's really acceptable for everyday shooting. Depending on what you're using the photos for, you might not even notice. I find the power zoom feature really weird and kind of pointless, but it's there so I'm using it. I got this as part of a kt and will continue using it but I'm not sure I would buy it on it's own. You're not going to get the best out of your a6000-series with it.

Worse than the kit lens!

Mar 18, 2013

A clever idea that fails completely. Coke bottle lens would be apt, but Coke is a registered trademark of a soft drink company so Sony cannot use it. The lens is supposed to come with a petal lens shade, but it is not included and there is no provision to mount one anyway. Just turn the zoom ring and feel the gears grind to get a feel for the lack of quality in this product. The regular kit lens is a better and less costly alternative.

Terrific, unique little lens.

May 13, 2017

This lens is regularly trashed on forums by pixel-peepers and those who don't understand that it needs to be corrected in PP or in-camera. It was designed that way. It is comparable in resolution to the $1000 16-70 in it's focal range, and yet is incredibly light and compac, will actually fit in a pocket with a6xxx camera. . A unique lens - there is nothing quite like it, and when bundled with a 6xxx camera, an incredible bargain.

Very convenient lens, fast and simple

Oct 2, 2013

I like using this lens for everyday shooting, is compact, light and easy to use. Autofocus works well and without a problem. The cons that I have found is the zoom function: is oversensitive, in a quarter of a turn goes from 16 to 50mm. Hard to have a fine adjustment. I don't know why Sony only sells it in Black in the US while it sells it in Silver in other parts of the world. Additionally, I find it a bit expensive.

Good for gimbal use

Oct 4, 2018

Bought this lens for my Sony a6500 specifically for gimbal use (Feiyu g6 plus). It's light and picture quality seems decent, and the electronic zoom is surprisingly smooth. The autofocus seems to search a bit more than my more expensive Sony lenses, but honestly that could be as much the fault of the camera. All in all if you need a lightweight lens for use on a gimbal this seems like the best option.

So poor !!

Jun 6, 2018

I bought this one with the Sony a6500 kit... I wasn't expected much but the quality is so poor... Can be used up to 30mm but after it's not sharp not even closed. if you buy it with the kit why not because for the money it still can be useful but if you buy it alone choose the sigma 30mm 1,4 which is excellent and not expensive. I choose the sigma 30mm to be my everyday lens rather than the 16-50.

A Good Start

Jan 23, 2017

I've had a solid run with this lens for some time now. Being one of the two lenses that came stock with my Sony a6000, the 16-50mm focal length range makes the lens a great multipurpose choice for any photographer. The zoom is whisper quiet, as the focus ring. I personally haven't had any issues with vignetting, though some softness can be discerned on around the edges of the frame.

It is as many have reviewed before me...

Oct 13, 2016

I'm not sure its even worth the low price not even remotely sharp at the edges. I bought it after I bought the a6300 (instead of as part of a kit) I needed a lens that take advantage of all the Auto features since I normally shoot video with manual prime Cine lenses. I'd say it's not impressive and a poor match to an amazing camera body. It works...

Not what I expected.

May 22, 2013

I was looking forward to using the lens when traveling. It turns out the lens is not as compact as expected. SONY did not match the competition in terms of a short length that would help the NEX line be easier to fit in a smaller space. It also seemed that the amount of distortion at the widest angle was more than I thought there would be.

Good for the price

Dec 12, 2016

I was baffled by the bad review that people gave to this lens. I believe most people just do not know how to focus correctly with this lens. Therefore, their pictures are not sharp. I tried this lens and focus carefully, it is good for the price. Of course, you cannot expect this lens to be as sharp as $2K lens. It is not even $200.

I've used the lens for a long trek in Nepal, and for many family occasions. It's not as sharp as other lenses I've tried (Zeiss Touit, mostly), but the useful focal length, compactness, and overall OK picture quality made this lens stay attached to My A6000 for a long time. Very fast auto-focus.
