An excellent buy for the price
I do a lot of low-light video with a Sony A57 (usually filming concerts at small bars and clubs) and this lens works really well for the price. I had read plenty of reviews criticizing the plastic body, but for a low-cost lens you can't expect much. This glass was way sharper than I expected, I had debated between getting this or saving up for the 1.4, and I am quite happy with this model. I'm sure there will be a few situations where I wish I had that extra F-stop but for now this does exactly what I want.

Bang for the buck!
This is a great multipurpose, fast, and light walkaround lens. Wide open produces very useful pictures and when you stop it down to 2-2.8 the shots sharpen up nicely. Gives you the option to not have to use a flash and the bokeh is pretty smooth. Although the construction is all light plastic, overall I found the build decent and no issues with the cosmetics. Would have given 4.5/5 stars but no option for that. Considering the high performance/low price point, this is a no brainer buy for the sony.

Great Photo Quality!
I use this lens mostly as a walk around lens,it also works great for portraits when you don't want to just have a photo of just a persons head, I dunno why everyone says it feels cheap, to me it feels built exactly the same as the standard 18-55mm kit lens you would usually get with your camera, don't expect it to be built like a carl zeiss or sony g lens, remember your only spending about 200 dollars for this and the picture quality you get for that price is great!

works well, no complaints
we purchased to take better indoor pictures (wider angle plus aperture). It works well and our primary lens to take indoor pictures. We are happy with this purchase and would recommend to others. I did consider the sigma 30mm/1.4 however, they were rolling out a new design and the outgoing models were known for some distortion at low apertures. Can't beat this value though someday I would like to compare the sony lenses with other manufacturers directly (like sigma)

Great value.
This was my first lens I bought to supplement my camera's kit lens. I chose to go for the 35mm f/1.8 instead of the usual 50mm f/1.8 because I wanted to be able to take low-light group photos such as at restaurants and parties. It's worked wonderful so far. Images are very sharp and the lens is very lightweight so great to carry around. The 35mm really gives you much more versatility than the more common 50mm, unless you're really only into single portrait shots.

Sharp and cheap but maybe too cheap.
This lens optically is a very good 50mm equivalent for Sony A-Mount, but in my opinion it's just built to cheaply. Sony gave us this amazing aps-c body in the A77II but just left it's buyers out in the cold for quality lenses. This lens is an all plastic body and mount. It just feels cheap. The focus ring spins when focusing and it has enough play in it that AFC focusing can't make fine adjustments accurately. Overall, I probably won't keep this or the A77II.

Great bang for the buck
Sony put in the stuff that counts (good optics and a fast aperture) and kept the cost down by using plastic construction and a not-silent SAM focus motor. The good optics provide very sharp photographs, the f1.8 aperture lets you blur the background (bokeh) which isolates your subject. Consider this lens if you're on a budget and looking for a fixed focal length lens for portraits. For the money you really can't go wrong with this lens.

Outstanding
Replacing the kit lens was the best decision I've made. With this 35mm f/1.8 lens, photos are crisp, colors are accurate, and bokeh is fabulous. The wide aperture allows me to take photos of my sleeping daughter with just the night light on. In normal light I'm getting amazing results. It is a very light lens made with lots of plastic, but the glass is what you pay for. This is a great little lens and I'm happy to have it.

35MM Magic
I could not be more pleased with the sharpness and quality of this lens- at a fraction of the cost for some of Sony's higher-end lenses, like Carl Zeiss. This lens, which I use with the Sony-SLT A77, will be a favorite for years to come. I love the look of the images I'm getting. It does a gorgeous job! The only con I would say is the mainly plastic body, but for the cost, handle it with care and it'll last a long time!

Awesome lense
Awesome lense very light, sharp even from f/1.8, focus is fast and accurate, colors just great, bokeh too... micro motor is not silent but is not too laud either, practically not even noticeable in normal work, not too expansive at all, it's all plastic but doesn't bother me because it definitely doesn't feel cheap like the kit lens 18-55, all in all, if you need a prime in this focal lenght I'd definitely recommend it.

Basic Fixed Focal Length Lens
I was looking for a light-weight fixed focal length lens that was the same as a typical 50mm on film cameras. I wanted this as an option to the zooms I have. And I didn't want to break the bank on another lens. This lens was just the one I was looking for. So far, it has performed admirably in general photography scenarios. I use it on my Sony Alpha a77ii and my older Sony A350. I haven't had any problems what-so-ever.

Useful Prime
This is a great lens for the price. I bought mine about a year ago, and this is the lens I use most often. It's fast enough and wide enough for indoor low-light shooting, and is a great focal length for group shots. Results are plenty usable at F2, and by F4 is perfectly sharp. The build is plastic, but has proved durable. The focus ring feels cheap, and has too much give to be useful for manually focusing with video.

Great lens!
I read many reviews before purchasing this lens and most of them were 4 and 5 stars....they were right. This is a great lens and very inexpensive. Im so impressed with how well the lens functions in low light situations. I recently purchased the Alpha A65 and I shoot mostly outdoor portraits, the pictures I have taken with this lens are unbelievably sharp and the color is excellent. I highly recommend this lens.

THE prime to go with the A55
I use this lens for portraiture and indoor lower light shooting. It is sharp in the center wide open, sharpens up the corners nicely where across the frame is crisp by f5.6. Darned good contrast and no noted CA Well after all it is plastic, but not badly manufactured. A bit better manufacture quality than the kit lens in fact. Very light indeed with pretty instant focus and next to no focus noise.

EconoClass
I purchased this lens to provide a faster lens for my a55 and the 18-250. For less than $this lens is a real bargain. Shots at f/2 are very sharp and this lens produces spectacular in camera HDR jpegs. It's very light, a bit larger than I expected, but the combination makes for an excellent walk-around camera you can carry all day. I took away one star because the mount is real plastic.

A no-brainer.
This lens is my top pick for my speedy little A55, hands-down. For less than 15% of the price, you get optical performance rivaling that of Sony's excellent 35mm f/1.4 G lens (minus the tank-like construction or full-frame support). It may be plastic, but what do you want for this kind of performance for under $200?Don't take my word for it, see this review:@

Best Prime for Cropped Sensor A-mount
The lens is very sharp starting from f2.0. Bokeh is smooth with round highlights. The lens does have a few drawbacks, which include a noisy and wobbling autofocus motor and the plastic lens mount. Overall as far as image quality is concerned this is one of the sharpest lenses for the Sony cropped sensor A-mount cameras and produces excellent bokeh.

Not A Keeper
Wanted this lens for awhile and was disappointed . Very erratic auto focus on my A77. i could see some images would really pop the way everyone raves about this lens. The killer for me was the very loose focus ring. No dampening made it really difficult to manual focus. Returned it . Too cheaply made. May spring for the Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art

Great lenses for Sports!!!
Great results for the price!!! I photographed Badminton games with it, and also made some short movies, and the f1.8 has great advantages indoors, the close alternative is a 1.4 35mm for a lot more money!!! This is s must have in your bag of lenses, and you will not ever regret buying it. Good combination with the Alpha 65 or Alpha 77.

Great little prime lens
I bought this lens used from B&H two months ago. It was in great condition. Have been using it exclusively since then on my Sony Alpha 200. I have no need to use any other lens. The lens takes great pictures, and I am very happy with it. Yes, it is made of plastic but I don't take it on and off so the material does not matter to me.

A Sharp Prime at a Great Price
What it lacks in build quality, it makes up in photo quality. Images are sharp and colors are vibrant. Chromatic aberrations can appear from time to time in bright photos, but images are generally fantastic. Bokeh is fantastic, but the lens is slow to focus and loud when focusing. That being said, for $, this lens is tough to beat.

Great Lens!
I have shot 750+ shots with this little guy and I love it! It is currently mounted on my wonderful Sony a55. It is perfect or a little light carry, do all indoor lens. I love the price and the build quality is not horrible. It is a plastic mount but seems to be holding up well to my abuse. Buy it, for the price you can't go wrong!

Produces great shots but poorly built
This is a cheap, fast lens that produces some great photos. My only complaint is that it feels so fragile. Great lens for the money but I would be very hesitant to take it any place where it might get bumped around. Sony needs to give their Alpha lenses the build quality of their NEX lenses. The build is why knocked off one star.

Fast and very sharp lens
This lens takes very sharp pictures. I am using it on Sony's first DSLR A100 and it gives amazing results. Camera now focuses much faster in low light.I was thinking of upgrading my camera which is 5 years old but after buying this lens I think I will keep it for some more time.Lens is very light which makes shooting easier.
