Great camera! A bit too much hype...

Jan 17, 2016

I use this camera professionally as a videographer. So far, I've used most of the film modes (4K, 1080p 120fps, 1080p 60fps). And I've tested the low-light functionalities. The 4K looks fantastic. No complaints at all. The 1080 looks great - the APS-C crop for 120fps is unfortunate - need a wider lens. The 1080p 60 is awesome. The low-light abilities - as far as max ISO is concerned - are statistically impressive. However, when it comes to actual... Show More

My first camera since my Canon 5DM2

May 30, 2016

As of this writing, I've been using my Canon 5DM2 since 2009, and Canon always seemed to underwhelm with their M3 and 7DM2. While I love the Canon colors, the ability for 4K, slomo, and great low light capabilities always seemed to elude Canon. I almost went with the first A7S, but the lack of 4K internal recording was a no-go. Only a year later, and they came out with the A7Sii with 4K internal and six axis stabilized sensor! I have no regrets i... Show More

Made the switch from Nikon

Apr 5, 2016

I bought this camera after having an allegiance to Nikon for a long time. I am a news video journalist looking to add some more creativity into my work with a new videography venture. This camera seems to be the perfect start to my new gear setup. I was originally a stills photographer and debated on getting the a7rii for the much larger 42MP. And I would recommend that camera for people looking to do stills. However I wanted to use this for prob... Show More

Remarkable camera

Dec 27, 2015

I've used my original a7s in many situations and thought I would not need to replace it. Once I shot with the a7s II, that all changed. The internal UHD recording is a huge plus, but the improved noise floor knocked me out. The imagery is smoother in low light situations and cannot wait to take it out during the day with a variable ND. The a7s line has incredible dynamic range and records so much detail in day exterior locations which feature a g... Show More

Very nice. Not perfect.

Mar 6, 2016

This camera is almost the perfect tool for those who shoot video in low light. For other uses, there are less expensive options. The sensor is awesome. Excellent IQ and it holds up very well at high ISO. Auto focus is mediocre compared to other CDAF cameras. Usability is less than stellar. For example, the front and rear dial placement requires reaching significantly outside the natural position of the fingers. For those who can afford multiple c... Show More

Crop Factor at 120fps

Nov 10, 2015

I am new to Sony cameras and like the camera and the quality from it. My only complaint is about filming at 120fps. Maybe this is ignorance on my part but when filming at 120fps using the Sony 24-70mm FE full frame lens there is a significant crop factor, probably 2X. I called B & H and the support person did not know anything about the issue but I later had a support chat with Sony and they said this is normal when filming at the high frame rate... Show More

Great DSLR for the price

Mar 13, 2016

Been shooting with this guy for about 3 months now. At first I was annoyed that my old metabones adapter wouldn't work i 4K video mode, and some of the buttons needed repositioning (not a big deal). All if all I spent $4300 on body, cage, warranty, and new metabones. The 4K at 100MBPS is really great, I just shot a piece on my FS700/7Q and its really hard to tell the difference. The SLog3 is great as long as your properly exposing for it. Low lig... Show More

Amazing video camera

Im a videographer first, photographer second. This camera takes outstanding video in low light situations, and the video is so clear that I am able to take stills from the video and pass them off to clients as photos. I have used this camera to take pictures of stars and I get great results. Lenses for this camera are expensive! I use this camera on a Ronin-M and it is a great combo for some exciting shots. Best Camera I own

Mar 30, 2016

This camera was my upgrade after Canon t2i. It is my first full frame camera upgrade. I do not regret my purchase at all. The shots are MUCH WIDER and If there is a shadow on my talent, it does not ruin the shot as my canon t2i. It feels almost as if it would take effort to ruin a shot. I feel like this camera is an instant cinematic shot. Negatives: -If your lens is an EF-S cannon lens, it will have shadows on the side of your screen. -Autofocus seems to take multiple tries to succeed. Those are my own concerns at the moment, I have loved everything else from a non technical point of view.

Great All Around Camera.. great stills and awesome video

Mar 16, 2018

I recently used this camera to shoot a quick last minute promotional video for my wifes first music single; S.Marlo - Aint Got Forever. We literally went out the other day with no real plan just really to go out around the neighborhood and take some video footage of her singing the lyrics... 1 1/2hrs hours total. My wife edited the footage the same day. So we spent max 12 hrs total using only the Sony A7Sii and 1 lens, using whatever footage we had on the short unplanned time-frame. Even with the limited time, the video turned out pretty good. Thanks Sony for an awesome all around camera...

Mar 6, 2018

I purchased the A7S to supplement my FS7 for pick-up shots. As a video camera, its a notch above other DSLRs, even the pseudo sacred 5D because it shoots slog and has more dynamic range. But its still a DSLR shooting video. As a still camera, i recently shot an event with the A7S. Maybe because Im so accustomed to my Nikons I found the menus and adjustments clunky. Images are sharp but dynamic range for raw stills seems to be lacking a bit. Im happy with this device for a second shooter pick-up shot video camera but I will go to my full frame Nikon bodies for stills going forward.

Great tool for 4K video

Jul 12, 2016

I am using the a7s ii for real estate and wedding videos. It's nice to know this camera can handle any lighting condition I film in with the addition of some ND filters for outdoors, it's low light performance is astounding. No previous experience with the original a7s but I was able to get comfortable using it very quickly. The e mount system is great because I can use just about any super 35mm or 35mm lens that exists. For video use the battery grip is a must if you don't want to be putting in a new battery about every hour. Overall it's a great value for what you pay.

I LOVE THIS CAMERA SO MUCH

Sep 9, 2016

I needed a camera that could handle low light. I wanted a full frame, I wanted 4K Capability, and LOG shooting style. I needed something that worked all the time. You will need lots of batteries, and SDXC Cards, 64 GB's of higher (I got 2 for $150 each, and 1 for $50) They have plenty of plugins, that I use when I need to. My only dislike is, it's not a cinema camera, like an FS7 or FS5. Getting the necessary attachments (Rod Support, Shoulder pad, handles, Monitor, Matte Box, batteries, media, etc. If may be cheaper to purchase an FS5 instead. I still recommend it.

Worth every penny.

Aug 25, 2016

Coming from a D800 that I barely used, I wanted a camera I can carry around with me with ease and quickly pull out and shoot. My needs changed and I realized I wanted a camera where I can get great pictures and video, light weighted, easy editing on the RAW files, and most of all low light. I hate flash. And Sony delivered. Just Wow. I've taken more pics in the last week of owning this thing than the last year with my D800. Ridiculously sharp, great dynamic range, color, ease of use. Love it. Don't be uncertain like I was with its still capability, it shoots great!

Must've moved to Sony long ago

Feb 9, 2016

I moved from a Canon EOS T3i. Couldn't take this Camera out of my hand. It needs a lot of practice to get used to it, so I spend couple of hours a day to be able to use it efficiently. The level of professionalism in this camera is spectacular, the control of small detail in video production is unimaginable. S-Log3 is something all cinematographers need indeed. Low light capability is just... amazing!!! I took an image in really low light environment, with 12,800 ISO, and the noise in the pic was much less that with the Canon at 400 ISO in a well lit environment.

THE best option for filmmakers

Jan 26, 2016

I started out with the Sony a7S as well as the Atomos Shogun external 4k recorder, but found the setup a hassle, and as a result, never used the 4k feature much. But THIS camera - I've had it for two weeks now and can't believe the performance. To critique, I had initially expected to use the new S-Log3 feature predominately, but found the Cine3 profile to be exactly what I need in most situations. Again, the in-camera color without a picture profile is substantially lacking from canon DSLR's, but if you're able to use DaVinci Color in post you won't be sorry!

Get it while you still can!

Jul 17, 2019

Having a lot of experience with more than 20 types of the video/digital film cameras in my career I got to admit that this little sucker was definitely one of the most remarkable milestones! Unbelievable low-light performance and pleasant image definitely made this camera a cinematography workhorse. Unfortunately S series might be a bit obsolete at the moment, so if you ever though about having this camera in your creative arsenal I would buy it while it is still available. And using it for almost for 4 years I never had a single problem with it.

Good upgrades inside - steep decline outside

Nov 23, 2015

It has what everyone wanted as far as features go - but the build quality is a couple notches down from the a7s: plastic cheap body, dials that feel like the delicate plastic they are. The HDMI ports now have cheapo plastic covers which get in the way when you hook up your external 4K recorder. Annoying that you can't shoot internal 4K on APSC crop lens - which is pretty much most cine lenses. Yes the camera is even more light sensitive with lower noise - but it would be nice if the professionally priced camera was professionally built.

Perfect for Pro and Amateur Video/Photo

Dec 27, 2018

If you use this camera with an external recorder, it becomes a true powerhouse in the video department. S-log grades quite well. Low light is truly astonishing. Dont compare it to an Alexa, it isnt an Alexa and nor should you compare them. I will never buy a camera because it is small, I would buy it for what it can do. And this one does a lot. Taking photos is also pleasurable. Full frame. Focus is quick with native lenses. Resolution is (obviously) nothing spectacular. So it performs as youd expect, it being a video camera first.

My favorite dslr for film making

Dec 29, 2015

I paired this with the Rokinon 35mm and I can practically shoot in the dark. The AVCHD files are a fantastic upgrade in quality over the simple mp4's from my old canon. This will be my primary camera for shooting music videos and live concert videos, and it is more than capable for the job. It IS a bit of a battery hog, so have a few spares hanging around if plan on shooting for more than 30-35 minutes. Overall, this is my favorite dslr I've ever owned. I would rather shoot with this than a Canon c300.

I love my Sony cameras!

Dec 16, 2016

I bought this camera as an upgrade to my A7S. Cosmetically, I like this build better than the glossy previous version because the scratches are less noticeable. This one is also bigger and heavier which is better for most people because the A7S feels a bit too small and light for grip. I wish the menu is a little easier to navigate around but nothing the firmware can change. This is my primary camera for my projects with wedding and I never have the overheating issue like most people complained about.

Amazing Low Light Performance

May 30, 2016

I am very pleased with this camera. It is powerful and discrete when being used at events. I have used it with a steadicam and a 16-35mm Sony lens so far, and am very impressed with the results. I still need to master the feel of the focus as I had previously used only Canon. But the low light performance made the decision to go Sony an easy transition. The batteries will go fast, so stock up a few. The camera comes with two. Shooting at HD at 50 mb/s, I could drain a battery within 75 minutes.

Noisy video - bad batch?

Nov 16, 2015

I wanted to love this camera, but you are taking risk buying this. The video coming out of the a7sii I received is unusably nosey at all setting and picture profiles. I have seen fantastic videos across the web from this camera, but there is a defect in many that cause the noise. I upgraded from an old 7d and incredibly get better pictures out of the 7d. I have a gig this week and will be using my 4 year old 7d instead of the a7sii (that says alot). I will be returning the camera ASAP.
