Moving from Nikon

Jan 11, 2017

I jumped from a Nikon 5300 for shooting YouTube and Facebook commercials. The biggest barrier was learning the new menus and functions compared to what I was used to using with Nikon. I use a power zoom lens for videography and a Zeiss lens for photography. Both work extremely well in low light situations. The camera is much smaller and more portable than even the smaller Nikon 5300. The Autofocus is a huge step up and the touch screen incorporat... Show More

Great for video

Jun 15, 2017

I was using an A6300 for video interviews but found the overheating issue problematic. I upgraded to the A6500 for this one reason and I'm happy I did. I have just finished a large project where I recorded long interviews at 4K and had none of the shutdown due to overheating I had with the A6300. The clips are limited to 30 minutes, but I was able to just re-start record and continue on for another 30 minutes and then again for another 20 minutes... Show More

Great Camera

Jan 22, 2018

I just bought this but so far I like it a lot. It has amazing focus and picture profiles. The 4k is really sharp. I'm coming from using the Canon 6D and 70D. I like the color on the Canons well enough but the flexibility in editing 4k is just too good to continue shooting in 1080 only. Besides the color from the Sony is also really good. I was able to buy a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 prime and a Sony 50mm 1.8 prime. Using these two primes with the camera's... Show More

Great camera but STILL overheats when shooting 4k!

Jun 11, 2017

I did a test today indoors (in an A/C-filled cool room) and the camera still overheated! And it's brand new! The entire body got hot. I even had the menu properly set so the camera keeps running if it overheats, gand it did for a while, but after an hour and a half, it still shut down. And that is with me replacing the battery with a fresh one midway through the test shoot. So, if you don't need to shoot continuous video on this bad boy, then I r... Show More

So far so good!

Jan 3, 2017

I've made the switch from the Canon world to the mirrorless land of Sony. It is vastly different and there is definitely a learning curve, but this camera is so much more powerful and I'm in awe at what it can do! Slowly but surely I'm learning my way around the menus and figuring out the back buttons. The images I'm getting so far are so much sharper and have far more depth that I was getting from my Rebel. I'm very happy that after making the s... Show More

Easy Conversion

Jan 5, 2018

I am a Canon guy - always was. Shooting with full-frame DSLR and it still will be remaining my main camera - all my lenses are Canon's, including long telephoto for wildlife. But I decide to try mirrorless for walkabouts in Paris. Alas Canon's mirorrless are not up to par so I ordered Sony a6500 with 18-105/F4 lenses. Great choice - the camera has at least as many functions as my 5D Mk IV, if not more...fast autofocus, quite good in low-light. Th... Show More

A lot of camera in a small package.

Aug 2, 2017

I have been showing with Sony cameras for a number of years. I have the a7r and a a6000. Both cameras have served me well for different reasons. Why did I buy the a6500? Not in any particular order, 1. the more advanced auto focus, 2. the size of the buffer, 3. in camera image stabilization, 4. eye autofocus, 5. 4K video, 6. touch screen focus, and 7. silent shutter. As with the a6000 the smaller form factor. With the form factor and silent shutt... Show More

Sony A6500 for action shots.

Mar 20, 2017

I was hesitant about trading in my newly purchased A6300 for the A6500 but I really wanted the upgraded camera with the built in image stabilization. After using the A6500 for a few weeks with my 70-200 f4 lens, I still can't believe how much sharper my photos are taking photos of my daughter's soccer games. I wasn't sure if there would be much of an improvement in my shots since my lens has OSS but my photos are much crisper now! If you want to ... Show More

Get's warm but willing to look past it! Amazing Video!

Dec 12, 2016

I'm using this camera primarily for video. The low light performance, continuous autofocus, and stabilization were the three things important to me and this camera exceeds my expectations in all 3 areas. There were however speculations about over heating problems that I was worried about. I ran it for 2 29 minute clips. The temp icon came on around 27 minutes in the first clip and stayed on the for the whole 2nd clip. I switched to 1080 for a 3rd... Show More

This is an amazing camera

I have used the NEX-7, and now own the A7rII, the RX-100 IV, the RX-1 and love them all. The A6500 has the perfect file size for me, and starts up faster than the A7rII and also seems to have faster auto-focus than the A7rII. I also like the crop sensor format which works great with some of my Full Frame lenses like the 500 F8 mirror lens (with adapter), the 70-200 F2.8 GM. Terrible rolling shutter

A friend suggested I get this camera to be able to shoot 4K videos for our YouTube channel. I used it to take a few pictures and found it good. I'm not a photographer, but the images were nice and sharp. I started trying to use it for video and spent 3 hours messing around with all the settings to attempt to get usable video. In 1080p and in 4k, I could not get usable video if the camera was panning at all. Even movement of onscreen talent looked... Show More

To cut to the chase , I compared images taken with this camera and Sony 10-18 led to my Nikon D810 with Tamron 15-30. The image quality is very close with very slight advantage of Nikon in micro details only visible at 100% magnification on very good monitor. When downscaled to typical for Web format -no difference. The difference in weight of equipment is drastic. I would not hesitate taking Sony and that lens on Amy hiking trip , it?s so light.... Show More

A Nice Step Up from my A6000

Jan 23, 2017

The A6000 is a terrific camera, and it will be a nice backup for my new A6500. Primarily, the thing I like best about the A6500 is the new image stabilization, which allows me to use lenses that don't have it. I've just had the camera for a few days, and it is taking me a while to get used to the new menu, but the cloud is gradually lifting, and I think I'll like it better once I'm used to it. I have had a Sony a 6000 for 2 years (still working great) and decided to get a second and better camera. Since I jumped from 6000 to 6500, I find most changes great, in particular: the mic input jack; the silent shooting mode; the fact that you can now shoot video from your phone with the remote control app (the 6000 could only take pictures); the better grip; the 4K video mode (which means you can crop post-facto and still get HD quality); the ... Great little camera Sony a6500

I also like the fast buffer with reading the card. I've only had the cammera a little over a week now and am really enjoying it. I picked this up on a deal with an included 16-55 and 50-200. I really put it to the test last week doing a pro shoot with a 5 year old kid playing with his mother. Very much improved from earlier e-mount Sony cameras I have been using. The in-body image stabilization finally lets me use my collection of early Nikon lenses.
