Not great but a very solid performer

Dec 4, 2019

For around $1000 I'm pleased. A little soft around the edges and the Bokeh is a bit rough but 75% of the center is sharp, not incredibly sharp but it gets the job done for what I was looking for which was a longer lens for weddings during the ceremony when a low shutter speed makes up for the f/5.6 allowing the ISO to be low. I use it on a Sony A7iii. Have taken out for some fun wild life pictures and it didn't disappoint. Great for social media where I can crop in during post edit. The lens works flawless on the Sony A7iii with a solid auto focus performance.

Stepped up from kit lens

Nov 10, 2019

I was shooting pictures of small birds in tall trees with my Sony 55-210 mm kit lens. The pictures were OK, but I wanted better than OK. I didn't want a huge long and heavy lens, because I travel with it. So I bought the Sony 70 - 300 mm lens. I took it out for a test run and I was pleased. Good pictures ... I can crop to get the little bird in the tree. It is heaver that the old lens, but manageable. Looking forward to my next trip.

Great outdoors lens

Bought this lens to tour national parks with my family. It truly worked great for taking pictures of wildlife, family, and some landscape. Very please with the performance and price. P.S. I am an experienced amateur photographer.

I paired this with the 24-105mm Sony for a very nice kit. Not as sharp as the GM, but less expensive. Fits my needs.

It is Very Good to Excellent on APS-C cameras but not on FF

Jun 7, 2019

I had many 70-300mm lenses for various camera systems, the best I had was the Latest version of the Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm lens. Perfect on FF cameras tack sharp wide open from edge to edge and corner to corner. If you are going to use this lens on Sony FF camera you got an excellent 70-135m lens but 200-300 mm is sharp only at the major center area, towards the edges and corners are very soft. However if you want to use it on APS-C camera yo... Show More

Pro quality glass

Jun 4, 2019

I have had this lens two years, and I have found it to be an excellent piece of glass. I am a fulltime pro of 40+ yrs, and never sacrifice quality in my photos or the gear I use to take them. This lens is extremely well made and very sharp. I generally keep it mounted on a Sony A7 ll, which makes a well balanced combo. I highly reccomend this lens.

I Have No Regrets

May 17, 2019

My main photography is doing bird and bird in flight action shots. I have for years been using my Sony A77M2/4-5.6/70-400 G SSM II (from B&H) and have been very happy with the results. But this combo is very heavy and for best results I need to use a ball headed tripod. This 70-300mm lens on my Nex 6 is a hold new ball, it weights in 4.5 lbs less than the above. My field bag lightweight and compact (see image), now I can go deeper into the wilds ... Show More

Wonderful, but it is needed a Tripod Collar Ring

Apr 11, 2019

The lens is really good. For sure It is what I was looking for. Only comment is that it is needed as Tripod Collar Ring because it is impossible to use with a Tripod from the camera, it is very unstable. Only way to use it is on hands.

Big lens, good images

Feb 26, 2019

Just started using the lens with the Sony Alpha 6300. I am thus far pleased with the results. It is a bit heavy but easy to grip and I do not intend to use it as a do it all lens. Its use is mainly for close ups of birds and similar. The attached bird photos were taken at a full 300 mm.

Jan 24, 2019

My initial reaction to the Sony FE 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 OSS telephoto lens is positive. (B&H Photo has been excellent to do business with!) Focus is sharp. Focus time is fast. It is a bit beefy and heavy, but not so much that you cant hand-hold it. I think, however, that it will create too much front-load if the camera body is attached to the tripod. Im getting one of the ring-and-mount components to balance the load somewhere in the middle. Want t... Show More

Some compromises but excellent for non-professional

Jan 8, 2019

This is an great lens. However, if money were no object, I would get the 70-200 and the 100-400mm. However, money and weight and legitimate concern. I complement this lens with the 24-105 and provides me with an excellent range of focal lengths. I am glad I didnt get the 70-200. I love the added range and the lens is sharp even at 300mm. It is not the fastest lens but for outdoors it performs really well. I love landscape photography so I am usually on a tripod shooting at f8-f11. Nevertheless, I sometime shoot birds and wildlife. Those were taken at 300mm f5.6 1/1250s

Wont focus at long distance

Dec 7, 2018

I bought this 1.5 years ago and did not use it. Then I bought a a7III and tried to take moon shots. It would not focus on the moon at all. Then I tested the lens at other distances and it wont focus properly. It is out of warranty so I looked up the repair cost. Over $400. Now I wonder what I should do. This lens is not up to Sony or anybody quality. I have now found many complaints about the same thing, and did not see any recall from Sony. And this after selling all my Nikon gear and moving to Sony!

Great lens, highly recommend!

Oct 29, 2018

I like to carry a relatively long lightweight lens with me when I walk my dog in local parks and rural areas. This Sony 70-300mm fits the bill. I can photograph wildlife, landscapes, individual plants and even some insects and birds if they're fairly close to me. I think this lens is very sharp although I haven't done any formal testing--I prefer to read reviews by professional reviewers. I previously owned the Canon 70-300mm f/4 L IS lens and th... Disappointed with slow AF

Oct 10, 2018

I purchased this lens to pair with my a7RIII to take wildlife and youth sports photography. In both wildlife and youth photography, I'd like to shoot at f/10 or so. When doing so, the focus is so slow that I miss the shots that I want. When asking sony support about this issue, they came to the conclusion that I needed to shoot at f/8 or lower in order for the autofocus to be faster. This does not lend well to sports or moving wildlife photograph... Show More

Sometimes capable and sometimes flawed

Sep 28, 2018

I purchased this for use on an A6000 as a "poor man's wildlife" lens (with the plan to go full frame body in the future). It is capable of producing some nice images of stationary birds IF you have excellent lighting and can get relatively close. In lower light or at a distance the images quickly fall apart (A6000's high ISO handling is not great and AF tracking is underwhelming). For telephoto landscapes - I tested this a number of differen... Show More

Lens defect.

Aug 23, 2018

I have now just received this lens for the third time and after inspection just like the previous two there is some time of defect on the inside of the lens. It seems as though the coating on the inside of the lens attracted dust, or bubbled up during constriction. For a lens that costs $1100 (US dollars) I would expect to not have such an issue. specially since this can affect the quality of images taken. Was hoping the third time would be a charm, but most likely returning this lens do to this defect.

Does the job!

I am traveling to Kenya in October and want a lens for shooting animal photos. The "test" shots I've taken so far (deer in the front yard and my cat) are very nice. The images are crisp and the lens is easy to use. Only draw back is the added weight.

Not sure why people are having problems with this.

Jul 20, 2018

I'm not sure why people are having issues with sharpness or with anything else regarding this lens. The longer I have it, the more I like it. I don't normally do product reviews on my YT channel, but will at least be doing one covering why someone would invest in a lens within this focal range, and why this particular lens is a great choice.

My new lens

Jun 17, 2018

I am sorry, but I cannot make a "normal" review of the lens, because I do not have my camera yet. I ordered a Sony a7III at Henry's store and they told me that I have to wait at least a month, meantime I ordered one lens from you and 24-105 F/4 from Sony Canada which has the same waiting period... The last lens you just refused to send to Canada so I did not have another option. Your lens looks good but this is the only thing I can say now, sorry.

Has potential but have received two bad copies

Apr 16, 2018

The lens has a nice range for its size. Construction feels solid. However, I've now gone through two bad copies where it simply won't deliver a sharp image. Between 70-135mm it is bad and between 135 to 300mm is simply awful. I've taken pictures of static objects with 1/1000 sec ISO 100 with blurred images. I've tried manually focusing. I've tried turning stabilization on/off etc. Nothing is in focus. AF locks on quickly. I'm going to give one more copy a try and then look for an alternative.
