Excellent walk-around and travel lens

Sep 19, 2014

The lens has performed admirably for street and travel photography with my Sony A7, but it is not perfect. It is very sharp for a zoom, particularly in the center. Image stabilization works extremely well. It is built like a tank, which makes it a bit heavy on the A7. I have used it in the Mahane Yehuda market in Jerusalem and in Prague, among other places, and I am very pleased with the results. That said, it cannot compare to the great Sony Zei... Show More

I love ... Love the lens!

Aug 7, 2014

After reading a lot of harsh review from other web site, I opted to buy this lens since I need a walk around lens for street photography. No regrets that I bought this coz the picture quality of this lens is amazing. I have this for over 3 weeks now and the shots I took has this zeiss color quality. Working as an assistance fashion photographer I describe this lens as constructed with quality and beauty. The lens screens expensive! I love the fee... Show More

This Zeiss 24-70 f:4.0 is fantastice.

Mar 20, 2014

I ordered the lens without much information being available. After using it for a week I am thrilled with the performance. The constant aperture works without any draw backs. I have several Sony and Minolta high end lenses and this is on par with the best. On a scale from 1-5, I rate it as a 4.7. I shoot mostly out of doors but was in a museum and shooting with available light and the results are just as amazing as those taken outside on a sunny ... Show More

Recent copy much improved!

Jun 30, 2018

Sony apparently stepped up their QC on this lens. I tried 2 copies from 2015-2016 that did not impress, but decided to give it another chance and glad I did!! This new copy is very sharp from 35-70mm across the frame wide open and gets slightly better stopping down. Only slight corner/edge softness at 24mm....and this is on an A7RIII. Well worth the sale price, but I wouldn't pay full retail. The 24-105mm is still better optically, but if you wan... Show More

A good all around lens

Jan 18, 2016

I'm a pro photographer who works on Film and TV productions. I purchased this lens to use with my Sony A7SII. The lens seems sharp and it is pretty quick in focusing but I'm not completely happy with the knurling on the focus ring when I'm using manual focus. The grooves aren't deep or textured enough for a good grip especially with gloves on, as I often shoot outside in all weather. I had to end up butting a rubber bracelet around the focusing r... Quality lens

Nov 20, 2014

I ordered this lens to use for landscape. It did not disappoint. I should say that Zeiss is not know for making zoom lens and this is a great challenge for a company known for making the best primes on the market. The agreement between Sony & Zeiss to produce quality lens for their A & E mount lens appears to be smoothing out. I sent the first 24-70 back because it was too soft along the edges. The second one image results is what I expected from... Show More

Truly great lens

Jan 31, 2016

The most important thing is of course the quality of the pictures taken with this lens. Well I'm pleased beyond my expectations and honestly bought the lens on trial with the thought I'd return it if not wowed... because of the rather steep price. In either portrait or interior shots or mid-range zoom (i.e. 70mm) this lens is dazzling. Size and weight were other considerations as I plan to use it for travel and my big zoom is just too heavy and b... Show More

The right weight for the camera

Dec 23, 2016

I needed a camera that I could carry with me at all times. I got tired of lugging my Canon 5d M3 around the city and/or when I traveled. I decided on a the mirrorless Sony A7r II for its sensor size and its weight. I originally got the larger G series FE 24-70. That lens weighed almost as much as the camera. It completely defeated the purpose. I exchanged it for this lens. The systems portability really works for me now. As for the quality of the... Show More

Center sharp, corners are not!

Sep 26, 2016

Tried this lens out as an alternative to the massive Sony 24-70 2.8. I wanted a good/sharp lens that was lighter and more compact on the Sony mirrorless bodies. This f4 lens is decent in the center at f4 but definitely soft in the corners from 4-5.6. From f8 and on it gets better, but in my opinion isn't a usable lens for anything other than web size images. I shoot professionally and the 2.8 is sharp all across from 2.8 and onward and renders beautiful images. I would recommend either using all prime lenses or the 24-70 2.8 which is fantastic (just heavy and cumbersome on an A7II).

Great Walkabout Lens

Nov 29, 2015

I use this lens on my Sony A7Rmk2 as a general walkabout lens for street photography and family shots. I think it is a great walkabout lens and good value for money now that it is cheaper than the launch price. I think some people expect it to be as sharp as a similar priced prime lens but that will never happen - you give up some sharpness in exchange for the flexibility of the zoom. 24mm is quite wide and very usefull. Sometmes I would like a bit more than 70mm on the long end but with so many pixels to play with on modern cameras you can just crop. I really like this lens.

Good lens

Jan 28, 2017

I looked very hard at this lens as I'd read some critical reviews. The results mentioned in these reviews I believe are mostly due to the combination of the lens with the big sensor of the AR7II. This sensor gives one a closer look at any lens deficiencies. In the end, I decided it was as good or better than its Canon L-series analog. I use this lens primarily for landscape and natural subjects. Used with the A7RII it focuses neither front nor back at both ends of its focal length. Construction feels solid for such a light lens and the controls work smoothly.

Must have for the e-mount Sony cameras.....

Apr 28, 2017

I am an enthusiast in the photography world who always likes to buy the best equipment I can afford even if it is beyond what are my abilities. I switched over to the Sony A7 series after reading so many fantastic reviews and am extraordinarily happy with this system. I like to keep lenses native to system and selected the Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens as my general all around lens. Wow! Fantastic image quality, nice compact size and good feel in the hand. I may upgrade camera bodies over the years as they are released but this lens is a keeper.

Really Clear Lens, need time to learn with camera

Mar 20, 2017

Really impressed with the clarity of this lens. Everything on it is electronic and works with the a6300 very well. But there is some use learning curve on it. Took me a bit of time to learn how to manual focus by pushing the button on the camera, same with the aperture control. I will have to go through the settings (probably the user manual as well) to figure out how to get it all working how I'd like and switch between automatic and manual functions faster. But once I get that cased I'm thinking this will be a solid investment for our organization.

Very nice little lens

Mar 7, 2014

Used in conjunction with an A7R Lens is sharp for a zoom but of course not as good as the Zeiss primes. I have done extensive resolution tests vs a Nikon 24-70 and it beats that lens everywhere except at the longest end. The lens is a bit plasticy for a Zeiss but way more solid than the Sony 28-70 FE lens. I do wish the filter ring was metal. Overall a very nice lens but if you are used to the Zeiss primes for Nikon or Canon, it isn't built like those. Manual focus is very smooth and much better than all other focus by wire lenses I've used.

Excellent versatile lens

May 26, 2016

This is an excellent combination with the A7RII body. It is well balanced and IQ is fantastic. Sure it is a little soft around the edges, but for wedding, travel and family pics it works wonderfully. The focusing is quick and accurate. I switched from multiple Canon L glass, which are fantastic lenses, this lens is comparable in most situations ... and much much more portable, which is important to me. I would recommend this as a great walk around lens due to its light weight (when compared to L glass) and its quick and accurate focusing.

Great for still... not so much for video

Dec 4, 2014

I'm using this with my A7s primarily for video. Picture quality is good, image is sharp... when it's in focus. Which brings me to my main gripe. Although the AF seems to be quick for stills, it is maddening trying to get focus manually with this electronic focus ring. I can't wait for the FE 28-135 video lens to come out for that reason. with that said, the image stabilization works well and the rings move very fluidly. I would recommend this for still photographers, but not for video unless you have plenty of time to hunt for focus.

It has failed to disappoint me!

Jun 14, 2017

If you are on a budget and could only get one Lens, GET THIS ONE!! The reason why I say this is because I shoot everything landscapes, portraits etc. along with video. So no matter what situation I'm thrown into I know that I am pretty safe with this lens in my bag. The focal range really helps contribute to that. Even though f/4 isn't really known for it's stellar bokeh performance, it provides some pretty decent bokeh if you're wide open at f/4 and at 70mm. This lens is also pretty dang sharp when paired with my a7r2!

Main Driver

Aug 21, 2014

I use this for all of my paid jobs, tests, and video shoots. The lens is sharp, light, and comes with stabilization. As someone who typically prefers prime lenses, I'm surprised by how much I prefer to use this lens. When working for clients it's great to not have to slow down the shoot by switching to different lenses for certain shots. The distortion is quite intense especially once zoomed all the way to 70mm. However, Lightroom's lens preset does an excellent job of correction the issue.

Excellent balance of performance, price, weight, etc.

Feb 8, 2017

This lens fits the bill for most of the landscape pictures I take while walking around, where a wide angle telephoto that doesn't require a tripod to use is the most common need. Yet, the f/4 aperture has worked well in relatively low light, the images are sharp, and the weight+size are reasonable for my desire to keep my gear light and manageable. So, for me, this lens is the best starter lens and worth the extra price compared to the usual kit lens option.

Excellent lens

Mar 2, 2016

The lens has very solid construction and a beautiful finish consistent with the Zeiss name. It is well-balanced with the Sony a7RII body. The sharpness is excellent so I am mystified by the few reviews that question the image quality. I am transitioning from a Canon system and have a number of L-series lenses. These have not functioned smoothly with an adaptor so it is wonderful to have the full functionality of a native Sony lens on this powerful camera.

Reasonably good normal zoom

Aug 31, 2014

I use the Vario-Tessar T* 24-70 for those shots that are difficult to cover with a 50mm macro, usually due to space limitations. It focuses quickly, and seems adequately sharp at a normal aperture. It's a reasonable size and weight for a full-frame lens. I do think that Zeiss and Sony are overcharging quite considerably, though. True, lens prices have gotten comparatively high, but these are among the pricier offerings relative to quality.

Very Good Lens

Feb 18, 2016

Ignore the negative reviews. This lens is very sharp in the center all the way to the edges from 24-70. Most versatile of all full frame native lenses. Excellent color rendition under all lighting conditions. Small in size, built like a tank, buttery smooth operation. It's a do everything very well lens and perfect for travel. Works on a600 as well as A7's. What this lens is not is a specialty lens, such as Macro or wide angle etc.

Don't pixel peep too much

Sep 10, 2017

A lot of reviews were criticizing the lens as soft, expensive, not sharp, stick with the kit lens and etc. I don't know, but my lens is actually sharp across the frame, expensive, yes, but omg the size and weight is almost similar to the 55mm f1.8. I tried the kit lens once and found it lacking the contrast that I see from this lens. Don't be discouraged by the other reviewers, buy this lens and you won't regret it.

sharp in the middle soft on the sides

This lens is super fast and silent focussing, very sharp in the center, but the edges are soft at 24mm and F4 and don't improve significantly at 24mm and any F stop. Quite a disappointment for landscape shots at 24mm.I bought this lens to replace a Minolta 28-70F2.8 G lens I was using on my A7R and found the Minolta lens soft overall, whereas this lens is soft at 24mm on the edges and improves as you zoom.
