Great cinema camera

Jan 19, 2016

Sony hit a home run when they designed this camera. The controls are well laid out , picture quality is great. And the build other than the viewfinder is rock solid. It is flexible enough to handle just about any video cinema needs, and the fact that you can go directly to cards with 4:2:2 4K video is superb. The downside to this camera is the menu system which takes a awhile to go thru using the controls on the side of the camera. It might have ... Show More

Better lens than reviewed...

Jan 13, 2016

I think this is a better lens than the 3 star average it has gotten. Having said that, it does have it's issues. I'm basing this review off using the lens now for about a year on a FS700 paired with an Odyssey 7q.Cons: It is big, bulky and heavy. It is not very wide on the short end of the lens, so working in tight places can be problematic as can the focus distance which is also not great. There is no speed adjustment on the servo and it's not t... Show More

Powerfull tool for Cinematography

Jan 5, 2016

I have been using this camera for the last 5 months for the educational filming and short films. Despite it is somewhat slow and servo zoom and auto focus works funny, I like the camera. Last summer I was working with red camera and do not feel much downgrade working with Sony FS-7 for the quarter of the red's price. Camera works ok in low light, provides sufficient gamma of colors and has good dynamic range. I am glad that using adaptors, I can ... Show More

Almost awesome

Dec 28, 2015

The FS7 is a very customizable camera. You can create settings very specific to your needs. This is a blessing and a curse. It's nice to have the flexibility, but it also makes things more of a pain to set up. The options can be quite confusing for someone like me who isn't as experienced with Log color grading. There are many similarly named options that require research to fully understand. The FS7 lets you program custom buttons, but there aren... Show More

Great camera for cinematography first steps

Dec 27, 2015

I purchased this camera to have a tool able to film both corporate and short film productions. For the corporate needs, this is an amazing camera to work with. Looks professional, is professional. For the short film production at first I was a bit concerned about how it performs with low light. But then, customizing the gamma and camera's noise reduction I was able to reach very satisfying result. Outstanding results, considering the price range.

Holds up well on the big screen

Dec 21, 2015

I reviewed this product a year ago, this is an update. While I use the camera for daily jobs, I also used the FS7 to shoot a feature film (Providence). I shot in 4K CINE-EI SLOG3 exclusively, with a 4 person crew. We screened it in a state of the art theater and I was 100% happy with the color and resolution of the image. On a whim we submitted the film to AMC Independent, were accepted and it is slated for a Valentines day weekend release in theaters around the country. If that isn't an endorsement of what the camera is capable of even in my semi talented hands, I don't know what is!

Fantastic.

Dec 17, 2015

I waited until a year after this camera was released to purchase it. I really wanted to see if it would live up to the hype. I can safely say, it does. This is the most excellent video camera I have ever used. The image is gorgeous, the specs are amazing, and overall performance is top notch. There is a very steep learning curve if you're planning on shooting in Custom mode, and I highly recommend renting Doug Jensen's FS7 Masterclass. It's the m... Show More

Versatile and utilitarian for video

Dec 4, 2015

This lens is sharp across the frame, manual zoom is quick enough for crash zoom effects, and stabilization when attached to an 7S or S II body is rock solid. Coming from the other E mount lenses, I found the size and weight intimidating at first but soon I learned to appreciate the added stability, controls, even fly by the wire focus, which is slightly delayed, and the end effect is worth it. Bokeh is not harsh, although not buttery smooth eithe... Show More

Fantastic camera with some limitations

Nov 13, 2015

I use the camera for mostly doc and television shooting, and occasional narrative work. The strong points: -Ergonomics: excellent, brilliant right-side handgrip allows many controls including iris control on many lenses, focus mag and other functions. Good selection of user-definable buttons on the grip and body. Camera balances great on shoulder with some modifications (3rd party baseplate, XDCA unit with gold mount battery adapter). -Recording:... Show More

Best camera for the money

Nov 1, 2015

Slomotion features are amazing, slog3 offers huge dynamic range and with sony's codec you get a 10 bit file that uses very little card/drive space. The ergonomics are amazing. You are able to use custom LUTs and use LUTS you download online (MLUTS). The one thing I dislike from this camera is the complexity of it's features and how you take very long navigating the menus to turn on certain aspects of codec/framrate and colorspace in order to be able to use certain features (like 180 fps slomo, Slog3 and LUTS), It's time-consuming.

It's great!

Oct 29, 2015

It's a great camera whatever the design or image quality. I could say it's the best camera in this price range. qualityless 60fps 4K recording. It allows user switch the mode between Cine and Custom, u get a small F5 when you turn it to Cine mode. However, the firmware is the main issue. Always having problem of displaying histogram and wave. Hope it will be fixed via future upgrade.

The most affordable 'cinematic' Sony Camera

Oct 7, 2015

I'm not going to explain what the camera does, I'm sure you know that by now. I'm just going to talk about my experience with the camera over the last few months. I'm a cinematographer that can't stand your regular Video look, I'm much more into cinematic, filmic looks. I've owned all sorts of cameras including the RED epic, and I have to say that the FS7's image quality is up there. The internal codec is so good that I don't even use the 7Q reco... Show More

Superb imagery

Oct 2, 2015

The FS7 is by far the best camera I have owned and I have owned a lot. Great images, easy to use especially in cineEI mode. On the down side, the ergonomics are a little awkward, the XQD cards and Sony batteries are over priced and the menu system needs some work. Overall though a great camera for all occasions.

Drifting zoom, lanc and ergonomic issues

Sep 12, 2015

I use this lens with an FS700 and a7s. Mostly bought it to give my FS700 a live ENG ability with a servo zoom. The glass is great, no complaints there. My issues are mostly ergonomic. The zoom slider (wouldn't call it a rocker) is at a strange location on the left side of the lens. I'm accustomed to focussing and irising simultaneously with my left hand and zooming with my right. Just odd, will take a great bit of muscle memory rememorying. The z... Show More

Fragile mount...

Sep 9, 2015

We have two of these lenses mounted on our FS7's, and both broke off from the camera body during transit. The mount is secured to the barrel with 4 tiny thin plastic columns, and knowing the weight of the entire lens, the amount of stress the mount goes through by simple transport will not adequately hold the weight. I am baffled to see that this entire barrel is only supported by four thin plastic columns - You would think that Sony would be sma... Show More

For the money I don't think it is worth it, what bothers me the most is the lens hood You cannot turn it around for storage and the hood cap keeps falling off. I use a rubber band to secure it. Slow to focus and zoom.

Great camera, but Sony needs figure out ergonomics

Aug 25, 2015

I recently purchased the camera and overall I am very happy with it. The lens is a bit of an oddity, but works ok for what I'll be using if for - basic run and gun on corporate shoots. I use my old PL lenses on it for interviews etc. The electronics and imaging so far are what I expected and was hoping for, although I have not really tested it hard. The menu is a little clunky, but I think I can get used to that. But I must really say something a... Show More

Aug 4, 2015

First off, the important stuff. As far as a professional video camera goes, this thing is beast. 4k internally with a strong codec. 10-bit, 422. Boom. Image quality is astounding and low light is almost completely noise-free. The internal codec XAVC-I performs extremely well in post, maybe even better than ProRes. At first I thought that this might be the camera I have been waiting for. On further inspection I was disappointed to see that they abandoned the time tested pro power zoom lenses in B4 or PH mounts. SLR type lens mounts that are spring held are fine for short slr lenses but will not support big power zoom lenses. These need a breech locking mount common on all the old ENG style cameras.Smaller sensors on those cameras also gave them considerable... Show More
