Good lens for video/auto focus slow
Really like the aesthetic this lens delivers. Love the aperture control. Auto focus is slow.

Even better than expected
A remarkable lens that has exceeded my expectations. I have several excellent canon & sony/zeiss lenses. This includes L's ( 85mm f1.2 , 135mm f.2 etc) fe's (sony zeiss 35mm f1.4, 55mm f1.8). The IQ on the Planar 50 is better than any IMO. Technically superb with character. Probably wont use use it to photo swing dancers but the images are delicious. Love it @ f1.7

Not for me...
Size wasn't really the concern for me as I have the FE 35mm f/1.4 and this lens is only a few grams heavier. My issues are with the performance and focussing noise. Wide open, both my FE 35mm at 1.4 and FE 55mm at 1.8 are sharper and the fall-off is very similar, even with the 55mm optic. The 50mm f/1.4 hunts for focus in low light far more than either of these lenses and growls like my dental hygienist's stomach when she doesn't have breakfast. ... Show More

Just Perfect
50mm is my favorite focal length and just like the 35mm, it's great for travel, street photography and portraits, but with better subject separation. The images I get from this lens is truly amazing with very good sharpness throughout the frame even when shot wide-open. CA is controlled well, distortion is almost non-existent and while there is obvious vignetting at f/1.4, it doesn't bother me at all and it's correctable in Lightroom. The build q... Show More

Solid Prime Lens
Currently using with Sony A7SII. Amazing sharp image and looks great in low light. The only reason for not giving a perfect score is the price and that the autofocus is high maintenance. I bet it would be a lot easier to focus with the A7RII. However, I would still buy again.

The best 50mm lens I have
Let me start out by saying that this lens is quite large and for that reason alone may not be the right fit for many people. But if you are looking to get the most out of your Sony a7rii, this lens has to be the definitive statement in that area. If there is a better option for this camera, it would be difficult for it to be better. I just couldn't imagine how my camera could give me more pleasure than I already had, but I have been shooting Leic... Show More

Excellent, I wouldn't consider the Sony ar7ii without it!
First let me say that this is a large lens. It's the biggest 50 mm lens I own. It's quick, responsive and incredibly sharp. I have used other zeiss lenses and I think this is likely the best I have ever used. I also have to say that this is also the first Sony labeled lens that I have used on the ar7ii, and it is probably something I should have done sooner. It helps for everything to be matching because there was an automatic improvement in the ... Show More

Highly recommended Top Quality Lens
This is the best prime lens that I own. Almost zero distortion, amazing falloff and lovely bokeh. I was attracted to this lens for it's 1.4 aperture and the need for an excellent 50mm focal length portrait lens. I also plan on using this lens for astrophotography for stitching photos. I hear a lot of concerns about the size and weight, but feel that it's sooo worth it for the image quality. Compare the weight with a Sigma 50mm Art lens and you'll realize that good glass will have some heft!

Best 50mm ever made
I want to give Sony and Zeiss a shout out here, because they deserve it. This is the most spectacular 50mm lens ever built. Period. If you need proof you can go look at the test results on Dxomark. I'm using this lens on an A7R II. Now, I've shot everything from a manual film 1972 Nikon Nikkormat, to medium format, to digital and everything in between. I've never seen a more astonishing combination than this lens on the A7R II. The contrast, colo... Show More

Sony FE 50MM 1.4 pairs prefectlywith the 85G Master 1.4
Ok! so I have most if not all the Sony glass for the E-Mountsystem. I bought this already having the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 which is a very good lens but it has some limitations comparingit to the Zeiss 50mm 1.4. The Zeiss 50mm is the best 50mm for the E-mount system hands down. This is a lens you'll pick up first if you like the 50mm focal length. It's a lens that will step above your expectations and allow you to create stunning images. Out of all the ... Show More

Outstanding Bokeh
Although I already own the outstanding Sonnnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA lens, I decided to go ahead and purchase this lens as well. I have had excellent results from the Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA and Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM, so even though this lens is big and heavy and only 1/3 of an f-stop faster than the 55mm, sometimes when you need that extra bit of aperture, you really need it. I was not disappointed. On my very first outing with this lens, whi... Show More

Excellent lens especially for portrait photography.
Excellent lens. Been using this lens for a few months now with excellent results. Couple of warnings though, it is a heavy lens due to the amount of glass in it so if you are looking for something lighter go with the 55mm Zeis lens you won't be disappointed. It will also block you autofocus assist light on the camera as well if you use it. It has been a non issue for me so far since I rarely if ever use it. I got this for the manual aperture ring... Worth every penny.
It's big, the biggest prime in my FE lineup (ok 90mm macro is longer...) It's heavy... I think it's the heaviest 50mm across any mirrorless system (though I suspect the Leica SL will be heavier), and I believe only lighter then the DSLR Sigma Art. Thought it's distributed well. Its AF is slow-er then the next best choice, the 55mm F1.8. $1,500 for a 50... ouch Yet, it's... Sharp. Amazingly sharp wide open. The mic has been dropped here, nothing m... Show More

Brilliant Lens
Very sharp at f1.4. I bought this lens because I love shooting in low light for portraits and street shots. It hunts sometimes using the A7 ii but I can live with that because the images are superb! Subject isolation and that awesome bokeh renders a 3D effect which I thought were just hype. Well, it's true. It's got that special something to the photos. It's expensive but worth saving up for. I use to shoot Canon with the f1.2 and I like this f1.4 ZA a little more.

This lens is better than the 55 F1.8 but not by much. If you have the money and desire the best in this focal range, this is it. If not, the 55 F1.8 is no slouch.

This is a pro level lens, I've walked around with it on my a7rII with a hand strap and taken hundreds of photos and the weight is not an issue for me. The lens hood does make the lens look like a freaking telephoto lens and it draws a bit more attention than the 55mm zeis 1.8 which is also a great lens. I own the 35mm Sony Zeiss Distagon 1.4 and was really torn about getting this lens. The 35mm is amazing, I love it and it serves very specific purposes. However, 50mm is my favorite focal length.
