Very happy with this lens

May 20, 2016

I bought this and the Tamron 150-600 w/ LAEA3 for my A7Rii and A6000. Long story short, I'm returning the Tamron 150-600 w/ LAEA3 because this 70-300 out-performs it in just about every situation. It's sharp at 70 all the say through 300, where the Tamron falls dramatically off at 450 or so. I knew this before buying, but the 70-300 works perfectly on the A6000, where the Tamron will only work on the A6300, and reviews indicate it doesn't perform... Show More

Wow, so far

May 18, 2016

This rating would be a five star if it had a tripod collar. That said, thus far this lens has simply performed beyond my desires. Sharp, fast focus, really good color and OSS that enables surprising results with hand held shots. Still want to do more, but off to a really good start used with my Sony A6000.

Sharp lens with fast focusing

May 17, 2016

I use this lens on the A-6000. Went to the local zoo and took photos in challenging situations, through wire fences and dirty tinted glass. Despite these challenges, the lens quickly and accurately focused on the animals. Settings were on continuous focusing, shutter priority (1/800), face detection off, center focus, and continuous drive low. I found the manual zoom to be quite smooth. I had previously used the sony e-mount 55-210 mm. The SEL70-300g is a big step up in quality, especially at 100mm and longer.

Not a sharp lens from Sony

May 17, 2016

I use lots of Zeiss and G lenses for Sony a6300, a6000 and a7II. Most lenses from Zeiss and Sony are very sharp and details are excellent, almost all photos are sharp and when taking photos, I have confident that I will have lots of excellent photos. But with this 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens from Sony, almost all the photos are fuzzy and not even accepted. I have tried all different aperture and some are just OK if shoot at f/11. There is NO WAY to u... Show More

Pretty dang decent lens

May 17, 2016

Its very usable wide open throughout its range. Sharpness at 300mm f/5.6 is reliant more on your steadiness and the shutter speed. Shooting sports at 1/3200sec yields very good images wide open. I'd say they're at least equal in sharpness to the Canon 70-200 2.8 mkI at 2.8. Focus speed on both A7r2 and A6000 is about as fast as any other FE lens. Its a little unbalanced on the A6000 but getting 450mm equivalent length is sweet. Weight is good for the lens specs. I wish it had a tripod collar.

Excellent results in low light

May 17, 2016

I'm using this with an A7Rii. The low light capability of this camera is exceptional, making this 'slower' lens perfectly suitable in low light situation. See the articles about 'ISO Invariance' in dpReview about this property of the Sony A7 and other cameras as well but not Canon.

Surprisingly sharp at all distances

May 17, 2016

I put this on my sony A7RII and shot the same image at 70mm, 200mm and 300mm. All 3 images were sharp. In fact, I shot the same subject with the sony 70 - 200 at both 70mm and 200mm. I then compared these with those shot with the 70 - 300 lens and was surprised to see that if anything, the 70-300 might have been a little sharper. The subject was outdoors on a bright sunlight day. But I was still pleasantly surprised with the results.

Just what I've been waiting for...

Great reach, sharp from 70 all the way to 300, manageable weight that pairs well with my A7r2 and more invisible than a big white lens.

Very soft and unpredictable shrapness

May 16, 2016

I switched from Canon to Sony and I enjoy every moment with Sony and all Weiss lenses and I love the 70-200mm f/4 lens. With this new FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens, I am very disappointed because the quality is very soft and unpredictable sharpness and there is NO Comparison to the 70-200mm f/4 lens. I would not recommend this lens to people who shoot action and wildlife.

As good as you'd expect

May 13, 2016

I'm in the process of switching from Nikon to the Sony mirrorless system and really wanted a 300mm zoom for my Sony A6000 to match what I had with Nikon. I bought the Sony 70-200 G F 4.0 and while it is a great lens didn't have enough reach for me. I pre-ordered this hoping it would be of the same quality and a better all round fit. It is great on all counts. I think the IQ is better (close though) and the size and weight feel in better proportio... Show More

Better than expected

May 12, 2016

Short Background on me. I just got into Photography a year ago. I used an A6000. I live on a farm in the woods and the 55-210 just didnt have the reach I wanted for Piliated woodpeckers, Turkeys, Deer, Etc. That brings me to the 450mm equivalent SEL70300G. Thisbis my first lens with a AF/MF Switch at my thumb. What a great feature. The focus limiter is very handy. The Zooom (?) ring is a bit stiff but loosens up after a bit. The focusing can be a... Preliminary Testing Shows a Very Fine Lens

May 7, 2016

I received this lens last Thursday (May 5, 2016) and tested it against my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L. The testing was for resolution. I photographed an antique decorative exterior light fixture attached to a building about 125 feet away (Sony test attached). The results showed that the Sony is a match for the Canon. Both are excellent lenses. The Sony is almost 8 ounces lighter and the lens barrel diameter a little less than the Canon.
