Amazing focus performance for e-mount
Pros: good build quality, custom buttons are nice to have, focusing is extremely quick and completely silent. You don't even feel the motors (I've read there's 2) torque like other sports lenses. Cons: I tested 3 samples of this lens and all 3 had less resolvable detail than the Canon 100-400 f/5.6L IS II on the A7RIII @ 300-400 mm range and notably more vignetting. Also the IS does not float near as much as the Canon and seems to have more motion blur than the canon at the same shutter.

Terrific lens!
I purchased this lens, hoping I would like it. I have arthritis in my hands & wrists and find it painful to handle many of the long lenses on the market. This one is sharp, well balanced and over all the perfect partner to my Sony Ar iii.. the 2x converter makes this a perfect package. I cant wait to take it on my next safari!

Waiting for my extensive field work over next two months.
The equipment loaded fine out of the box. No problems with quick tests. Pro raters havent given the 2x teleconverter great reviews, not bad, not great. Hope to give the teleconverter a workout in the next 2 months.

Very sharp but not ideal for photographing small animals
This a is a great lens. Sharp, Sharp all over. However coupled with a 1.4 extender photographing birds is really hard. The new AI on the 3.0 Firmware seems to struggle with an 8 f-stop caused by the extender. This is a specially true for small birds at 30-50 yards. Also having some focus freezing issues that require camera restart from time to time with this lens.

Love this lens!
I do love this lens. I wish that I could afford the 400mm 2.8 but this one hasnt disappointed me. When the settings on the camera are right you get great shots!!

Great lens!!
I was skeptical on this lens but have fell in love with it. I take sports and wildlife as well as portraits. This lens has not disappointed me. We are going to Alaska soon and I cant wait to see what wildlife pictures this lens will give me.

Fantastic
This lens and 1.4 adapter are obscenely expensive but also yield outstanding quality images and focus for nature, moon shots and sports. Nice feature set. Moderately heavy on a Sony A7-3

Very Sharp!
Have only had it for awhile, but this lens is amazingly sharp. The OSS snaps in and puts the lens on rails. Very impressive. Looking forward to taking it on vacation in a month

Excellent Lens
Although I just received the lens and have used it on several occasions, I will say that I have validated the purchase and some-what justified the price. I was torn between the Sigma 150-600 and this lens. The Sigma lens (for Canon EF mount) needs a Sony E-mount adaptor and is one pound heavier. The Sigma costs $1,200 compared to the Sony $2,500 price unless you add the 1.4 (or 2.0) extender bringing the Sony to $3,100 and nearly the same focal r... Show More

Sharp
This lens is for nature and birds. We have only had it for two weeks. But based on quick week end walks around nature parks, excellent fast autofocus and very sharp pictures. No complaint whatsoever. Also very good close focus on flowers and insects. Very versatile throughout. Not too heavy but you start feeling it when walking long hikes. Would highly recommend it.

Incredible lens!!
My new favorite lens. Sharpest images Ive seen. Coupled with the a7R3 the detail is phenomenal. Worth every penny. While the weight is significant, the load is less than being frustrated with a lesser piece of glass.

Buy it...you wont regret it!
I debated for months over buying this lens, so I finally rented it to photograph my daughter running a marathon. After spending a few hours with the lens and realizing the kind of reach that I could get with it, I ordered it from B&H a few days later. The lens is pin sharp and allows you to capture shots from far away, like I couldnt get with my 70-200 GM. Id highly recommend buying this to anyone thats on the fence; you wont regret it.

Good working glass
I have had this lens for several months and came from lots of years shooting with Canon. I loved my Canon 100-400. This lens does everything the Canon did and is easier to shoot. I like the balance, the tripod shoe is 100% better. The color and sharpness is perfect. I am a corporate photographer with 40 plus years of shooting around the planet. The Sony system is growing on me more and more each day. I also shoot soccer for my sons team on occasion, this lens does it extremely well. See the attached image.

Great lens
Great lens. Super fast autofocus, a little heavy but bearable for a long day of shooting.

Lens is superb, perfectly sharp but 1.4 Teleconverter is not
I took some pictures or a car registration plate on a sunny day as a test (F 8/1/1000s iso 200 from 100 yards). Pictures at 400 mm with the lens itself were superbly sharp! I added the teleconverter and did the same. This time pictures were clearly somewhat blurry! I used a tripod and a remote shutter release. I used Photoshop to do a smart enlargement of a photo taken with the lens itself to the same size as the photo with Teleconverter. The enlarged photo was of much higher quality that the photo taken with a Teleconverter! Lens 5 starts Teleconverter 2 stars

Fast and sharp! Great Lens...
As soon as this lens arrived, I popped in on my A9 and took a few bird shots in the backyard.....I was shocked at how fast and sharp this lens is. I wish it had an aperture of f/2 or f2.8, but this didnt seem to matter much when I started using it. Great Lens and worth every penny!

Excellent Choice
For the price, I have found this to be the best E-mount lens for Sony cameras. For me it was the best 100-400mm long lens to mate with a6300 camera. I have used it strictly for wildlife and it has performed well. The only thing that I have seen that is sharper is the Canon system which is much more expensive. If I was shooting professionally then I would go Canon but for me the Sony worked fine. Focusing was quick and quiet. The only problems I h... Show More

Light and sharp
Ive been using this lens for over a week and find it incredibly easy to handhold and use. Its very sharp and focus is quick and smooth. Im a photojournalist and used it last night at the Lakers-Pistons game during the second half. I shot with it on a Sony a7iii at 10,000 ISO at 1/1250 at f/5.6. I was able to shoot downcourt as well as on the action at the basket in front of me. So far, so good.

I no longer have lens envy
This is the lens that Ive wanted for a long time. I have several Sony lenses, but the longest one was out to 200mm. I have a Canon 400 I used with my Sony thru an adaptor, but was never happy with the sharpness. Now I have a very useful zoom range in a lens that can be carried in my arms (if no tripod is involved) and capture tack sharp images at the full 400mm zoom. My first use of it was walking a zoo. Very sharp lens
I have used this lens now for about a week and can say on the Sony A9 it is extremely sharp. I took pics of surfers at all zoom ranges and was really pleased with the quality and detail. I also bought the 2x teleconverter and do not recommend it. On the A9 the minimum f stop is f11 and this reduces its usage dramatically. Still get sharp images but the reduction in light limits the pictures I can take.

Got it ? Get it !!!
On a6500: Very sharp, fast focus, bokeh, bokeh, bokeh; is one reason why I bought this lens. OSS helps big time because it's a bit heavy. First shot with lens, really loving it.

When the light is good this lens is THE lens for getting great intimate moments at a wedding . Sharp and great bokeh at longer focal lengths. Coupled with a 24-105 there one photographer with two bodies can produce just about any perspective.
