It Saved my NEX 6 from the Waste Bin

Aug 26, 2015

I have had the NEX 6 for a few years now. I got rid of my Canon SLR based on all the great reviews and how portable it would be. But, I was never happy with it. I thought maybe I lost my eye for taking pictures because of the mirrorless viewfinder. Or maybe the little 16-50 kit lens wasn't so good. I was just about to ditch the NEX and go back to an SLR when I bought this 10-105 f4 G lens. It has made all the difference. My pictures are rich agai... Show More

Great Everyday Lens!!

Jan 12, 2016

This lens was purchased for used with a A6000. First off distortion....uncorrected, yes, the lens has tremendous barrel and pincushion, this how it is small and compact for the zoom range and fixed aperture. HOWEVER, when used with the A6000 or Lightroom, either the camera electronically compensates for this or the Lightroom profile can be used to compensate. End result is a great sharp image free of distortion. Zoom is quiet and has variable spe... Show More

Nice lens but not for video with a7s

Mar 10, 2015

I shoot primarily video with a Sony a7s and FS-100. I'd been looking for a nice zoom and this one appeared to meet all my criteria: parfocal, constant f/4 aperture, image stabilization and smooth power-zoom. So much to like about his lens on paper. It's very nicely built too. But it doesn't work properly with the Sony FS-100 (or FS-700 I believe) due to the fact that the optical system for this lens is augmented by in-camera lens correction which... Show More

Great all-in-one lens

Dec 17, 2015

I was tired of carying and changing 16-50 kit lens, 35/1.8, 50/1.8 and 55-210. So I bought this lens and it is fantastic. I compared it to all other lenses. It has better contrast than 16-50 plus constatnt f/4 aperture. Focusing and zoom rings are more smooth and precise. This lens also compare very good to 35 and 50 primes. Needs a bit more sharpening in postprocess and then ressults are so close that I coulnd't say which is which. Also I have t... Show More

Poor optical performance.

Jul 29, 2017

I bougt this lens two months ago with the Sony fs5. It seemed to be a solid lens. The build quality is good for a lens in this price range. To begin with, the the zoom and focus rings are smooth, but working by wire which reduces the speed and accuracy of both functions. That means that focus has a slight delay. On the other hand, the power zoom works perfectly fine. It's very smooth and consistent throughout the zoom range. Sadly, the optical qu... Show More

Big lens

Apr 9, 2018

This lens is quite big and had me questioning why I bought it to go with a small camera. The purpose of the smaller camera was something that is lightweight and easy to carry around for travel. This lens makes the combo of the camera and lens very big but I think still manageable for travel. The image is much brighter and seems to have more contrast than the kit lens that came with the camera. It seems to be an ideal size as an everyday lens beca... Show More

Fatally Flawed for Video

Nov 30, 2015

I am only reviewing this lens as it relates to video shooting on the PXW_FS7 The zoom is very smooth and useable for video. 18-105 is an excellent zoom range for B-roll and cinema verite shooting. Optics are good. Manual focus FOR VIDEO is unusable. The manual focus ring reacts unpredictably to your touch. Often I tried, in an interview situation, to roll the focus forward an inch because the subject had leaned forward a bit only to have it not r... Show More

"Meh" to the point that, I kinda hate it.

Jan 18, 2018

We bought this lens to use on our Sony A6500 at my work (professional use), and I have to admit the range is useful but I don't care for the way it fires up on start up. Refocusing and re-centering the zoom after each time you start it up. You loose where you were at the last time you shot and the zoom/focus by wire is extremely weird. Been using this lens for about 6 months and I sorely wish we had gotten something else. It's a little soft wide ... Show More

Well-worth the money

Feb 5, 2017

I got this lens after looking at tons of reviews online. Considering I don't have access to a lot of Sony lenses in my area. This one does it all. Sharper and cleaner images than my PZ kit. Covers a large focal range, although I did struggle with the pin-cushion distortion the first time I used it but haven't noticed it since. Probably I connected the camera to the internet where it might have activated the correction..not sure, but I'm happier. ... Show More

Not what I was expecting, where's the quality?

Aug 31, 2017

This bulky lens is very nice for 4K video on A6300 but for photographs it's a disappointment. The chromatic Aberrations color fringing are extreme, especially on any enlargement around 20 and the clarity is lacking. I get better image quality with old 35mm film lenses. I will check to see if I can post edit to correct it but I don't think I should have to. Sony knows what they're producing and just compromises. The first 18-105 lens I bought was ... Show More

it's a compromise

Nov 18, 2014

I want to like this lens more than I do but it has its compromises. The size is very manageable with the A6000, it's not heavy at all, but with it, you can't use the flash for fear of shadows. That's a big drawback. The pics have been very clear and sharp, but there is noticeable vignetting at the corners. It being a power zoom, there's no scale to tell you what focal length you're at, just a little zoom gauge in the viewfinder. No for me. I know... Show More

Very Good Zoom!

May 3, 2014

Purchased for two reasons. To improve the quality I was getting from the kit zoom and to have a single go-to lens. The SELP18105G did not disappoint. *AF is quick *The lens is very sharp with some softening towards the edge. Those that want even sharper images should look at primes. There will always be trade off for the convenience of carrying one lens. *Though it is large, it is light and since zooming is internal, it never becomes unwieldy. Ma... Show More

A terrific all-purpose lens for sony aps-c cameras.

Jan 30, 2017

I have a Sony a6300 and bought the lens specifically for that camera. The 18-105 range fits most uses, the image quality seems to be excellent, even at the extremes, and it's a bonus to have an actual power zoom as I use the camera mostly for videography. It's a bit long and a bit heavy - for a gimbal - but can still be balanced and used. It feels better in the hand, with the camera. Extra bonus - I'm also using it on my old FS100 and getting sup... Shadows the on camera flash

Dec 30, 2013

I normally use a full frame Nikon DSLR with f/2.8 lenses. However it gets very heavy and bulky to travel with for extended trips. I purchased the Sony NEX 7 with 3 lenses (10-18mm, 18-55mm and 55-200mm) to serve as a light weight camera system. For a walk around lens, I found the 18-55mm lens a little short; so I often was changing to the 55-200mm lens. I thought the 18-105mm would be a good replacement and a quality upgrade since it was an f/4. ... Show More

Actual PXW-FS7 Use

Aug 30, 2016

I wanted to love this lens. Picked it up on a fellow DP's recommendation. Much lighter than Sony's proposed FS7 kit zoom 28-135 f4 G OSS lens but still has a power-zoom function. However, its not really 4K sharp and has major pin-cushioning issues when used with the PXW-FS7 in real world shooting environments. Maybe it plays well with the the 6300 and the A7 series (?). However, if you are attempting to use it with the FS7 and trying to cut cost ... Show More

Sony 18-105 mm F4 OSS Lens

I am a former professional photographer. I am now an avid amatuer. I bought the Sony Nex 6 camera a couple of months ago and the Sony 18-105mm to use as my standard lens. While the lens is agreat piece of glass, for me it defeated the purpose of having a mirrorless system. The lens is long and heavy and makes the camera very unwieldly to carry around your neck. Not good on the FS5

Jul 25, 2016

Hamid and Old Pro are right. Manual focus control is terrible, when trying to make minute adjustments the lens is liable to jump way out of focus when on the long end of the lens. Even worse, if you zoom in, focus and zoom out quickly the focus may jump out of focus, sometimes way out of focus. If you start to zoom back in it will grab focus. Quick zooms out cause unpredictable loss of focus, zooms in do not have the same problem. Try it yourself... Show More
