Not sharp at all.

Dec 21, 2019

This lens is useless. Not a single shot comes up sharp, no matter what you do to revive in light room and nothing. Have to buy a Tamron 28-75 asap, or else my A7iii is useless with this lens.

Tooooo expensive for a kit level lens.

Aug 2, 2019

First of all, this is a kit level lens, nothing more, but extremely overpriced fo the final image quality. This lens relies heavily in software post processing. It has a HUGE pincushion distortion at the 70mm end and a moderate barrel distortion at the 28mm end. If you're not shooting jpeg and if your raw development software don't have the correct lens profile for distortion and CA correction you'll be in trouble. The lens borders are very... Show More

Works with NEX-VG900

May 13, 2019

I bought a used VG900 and paired it with this lens. AF works, iris can be controlled from the body. Manual zoom, unless you use VG900 digital 2x. But a good match. Its 3.5, so you need light, but good for shooting stage or outdoors.

Nice paper weight

Oct 25, 2018

I use it mostly to stop the breeze from my AC shuffling the papers on my desk. Save yourself the extra $$ on the 'A7 whatever body combo' and use it for a nice steak or a massage.

Poor Focus

Jun 11, 2018

Not a fan of this lens one bit. Sony really seems to skimp out on the slightly cheaper lenses . Not one solid photo at the start of shoot and switched to a 35mm and tack sharp . Don't waste time folks. Very Unfortunate,

The kit lens

May 28, 2018

Ordered with a7 iii for $2198. It is not sharp. Autofocus is fine. It can work for fun. If you pursue better result, get G master 24-70mm f2.8. I think Sony can do a better job for kit lens. Maybe $400 extra instead of $200, at least stay away from mediocre.

Should have researched before buying A7iii with kit lens

Cannot match up with A7iii. Soft pictures and noisy at low light. Should buy Tamron 28-75 f2.8 at $799

Good lens

Sep 3, 2017

This lens came with the a7ll I bought and for the while it was the only E mount lens I owned. I am a bit of a pixel peeper but I have to be realistic about the photos I take. Difficult light conditions and improper camera settings cause far more photo imperfections than the optics of this lens. I take a lot more landscape and wildlife photos during hikes and trips than portraits and indoor shots. The weight of the A7ll/28-70 combination is also s... Show More

Pretty good for kit - full frame!

May 16, 2017

I really have to say, I'm enjoying this lens - I have other more expensive sony fe lenses and while they are good, I can't say they all outshine this one for everyday use. On the a7ii it's great - colours are spot on, and even in low light it's pretty good! the attached photos are straight our of camera, no editing.

Pretty expensive

Feels very cheap made, all plastic compared to my Rokinon lenses. But overall does what I need to beautifully.

Decent lens for the money

Mar 19, 2017

Great walk around lens, light, well made. Not as sharp as the 24-70 but also does not carry the price tag. For the money, it is a good, solid lens with decent sharpness, clarity, weight.

OK

Feb 1, 2017

If I HAD to have just one lens, and it HAD to be cheap, then this would be it. The thing is, I should've just saved more money because I know my a7sii has so much more potential. Single-shot AF is fast and relatively accurate. Continuous AF while video recording is slow. Noticeable vignetting at 70mm. This lens isn't particularly good at anything. Jack of all trades except it's a couple steps down from a Jack. While I really like the wide 28mm, 7... Show More

Kit lens. Get your toes wet.

Dec 7, 2016

I picked this up after reading reviews of the FE 24-70 f4. People said that the price difference didn't match the quality, so I went with the less expensive lens to get by. AF and stabilization work extremely well, but professional image quality, MF control and aperture just aren't there. Probably fine for some run'n'gun video work or controlled lighting situations, but I eventually chose invest in primes.

An OK Lens but don't expect much from it

May 16, 2016

I just came back from a trip where I used it in a wide variety of situations including landscapes where this lens should shine. All I can say - meh, nothing spectacular with this lens. The images are generally flat and uninspiring even in good light. I had to tweak the images too much fro my liking. The lens has a tendency to back focus which I can't abide when it's made by the manufacturer of the camera body - it's inexcusable. If I had to do over again I would skip this lens.

The attached photo is straight out of the camera, handheld at 1/4 sec, f22, using a7ii. Great combo. Lens is fast and accurate. Not immune to water spots.

Good general-purpose lens

Apr 14, 2016

Nice general-purpose lens. Lightweight, good outdoors, street shooting, etc. Indoors needs more light, as expected from a 3.5 lens. The focus motor is dead quiet and the zoom ring has a nice resistance for smooth video zooms. I got it with my A7ii kit, glad I did. Limited as a professional lens, but good for general use and travel. I like it.

Excellent service and speedy delivery!

The lens was in an affordable range and worked great with the Sony A7ii. Gilman Gallery is an antique mall and the photography is challenging. The lens is perfect for shooting in different lighting without a lot of adjustment. A time saver!!

An OK kit lens but not much more

Mar 21, 2016

This is a decent kit lens but not much more. I got it because it came with my A7SII for almost nothing. I usually film in under-lit stables and riding houses and I've compared this lens on 70mm with my Sony 70-200 4.0 zoom (also on 70mm). Since light is scarce I shoot with the lenses wide open or close. Both lenses does not really cover shooting riding lessons me. 70 mm is just not wide enough and not just tele enough. A 50-135 would actually be ... Show More

Very pleased with this lens

Feb 11, 2016

I agree with other reviews that say the corners can be a little soft here and there but that, overall, the performance of this lens is truly excellent. For the price, the image quality is really standout. Love the in lens image stabilization and think it's great handheld as well as on a tripod.

Sharper than my L lenses

Jan 19, 2016

I use this lens for landscape and video, it's sharper than my Canon L lenses on a A7s. People are so obsessed with brand names and build materials they're totally missing the best kept secret in the Sony lineup.

Not Good Enough for the A7Rii

Sep 22, 2015

This is ONLY about this lens's performance on the Sony A7Rii. It is just not good enough. I have only taken 50 pictures with it--and it very well might be a defective lens--but it is clearly NOT up to the capability of my amazing new A7Rii. Not one good sharp picture across the entire field. I also have the Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8 and the results with it are spectacular. The 28-70 is flat and fuzzy--no POP--edges and corners are sadly out of focus a... Show More

Gets the job done.

Sep 22, 2015

I purchased this primarily to have a zoom lense for documentary filmmaking, and with the small line-up Sony has for full-frame E-mount lenses, this seemed to have the best reviews. The zoom is smooth, focus is crisp, and the OSS makes a huge difference. I've been using legacy lenses with my a7s until now, so this is a huge step up. The auto-focus is taking some getting used to, but I don't know if that's necessarily the lens's fault.

Ggreat for the price

Sep 3, 2015

Great Lens - light, small and in general a great lens. I do find it a little soft on the edges when full out at 70mm (but arnt most lenses anyway) and also at 28mm but in general its pretty darn good for the price. Its a nice adition to teh 16-35 I have and I didnt want to shell out another $ for a longer lens - I could have bought the 24-70 but decided the price is great as a walk around general lens - I do mainly landscape.
