I'd read good things about the Heil microphones online, but this is something you have to hear to believe. This mic is simply the best live microphone I have ever heard. Period. Try this mic if you get a chance. I ran this mic through a roland keyboard amp for a rehearsal, and it sounded so clear I couldn't believe it. We ended up recording live room sound during the rehearsal, and the vocals were so much clearer than we expected - even better than the vocals captured by the two overhead condenser mics we had set up. I've tried a bunch of different dynamic mics over the years - Shure 58, beta 58, 57, various Sennheisers, Audix OM-2, EV ND-767. The Heil PR 22 is, to my ears and for my voice, head and shoulders above the rest. The Heil is super quiet, except for the sounds that you want to come through the mic. The sound quality from this mic is very clear, and the frequency response is great: no honking nasal sounding low mids! The best way I can describe it is that the sound I hear coming from the speakers is like the sound inside my skull. I use a Shure SM7B through a 1073 clone preamp to record vocals in the studio, and I am very happy with the sound I get from that mic and preamp combination. More Breath and Air than any dynamic mic

Bought this in the red spotlight series version that uses the same capsule but actually cost less. Has more breath,air,and articulation than any equal or higher priced dynamics such as the beta57,e835,or n/d967. While the sound is definately superior, the polar pattern is not as tight. This may pose a problem with extreme stage levels or bleed/feedback prone situations. It is condenser-like in its range and you dont have to eat it like some of the super/hyper-cardioids. Has a very usable though not overpowering proximity effect. About time we have a large diaphram dynamic. You wont know it by the windscreen size though.{its a 1-1/8" capsule} The case is a little large for my taste but contains 2 extra screens for a total of 3,in gold,silver.and black plus a mic clip coated in teflon for easy slip and slide removal. Also a foam outer wind/pop filter is included. A super deal for what you get. This mic can also be used on drum overheads/snare with very good results. I use this now and have a e/v pl44{another great deal} for times when we really crank or bleed/ feedback is overwhelming,usually due to other mics on stage. Highly recommended. ... More

I have never liked the sound of my own voice. To me, it has always sounded muddy and nasally. As a result, I have always felt very intimidated by the prospect of singing in our band. Fortunately, I was happy to be one of the backing musicians anyway. And we always used those industry standard 57s and 58s. I heard good things about this mic and so, I thought why not? Guitar Center offered me 30 days. So, I've used this mic for some six months now and I'm not giving it up. At first, the differences between this and the standards didn't seem really super noticeable. We don't have a piano player so, when we decided to play some piano songs, I quickly jumped off the guitar and started learning the piano. The next step was that I learned songs that I knew the words to and the other band members said that I should go ahead and sing the leads on those numbers. This mic has honestly made this possible because when I hear MY voice in the monitor, it actually sounds good to me. It is very confidence inspiring. I asked the other guys if this is actually what my voice sounded like to them and they all said "Absolutely!" Seriously, I give the credit to this mic and suddenly I'm enjoying an entirely new avenue of musical expression for me. ... More

I have been using SM58's and 835's for years. I was content with those mics but I have recently acquired one of these and WOW! I love how it cuts through the mix. The others seem to be a little rounded on the bottom end but this one is really natural to me. Just love it and would recommend it to anyone. Thanks!

Easily the best snare mic I have ever heard. I would imagine this mic would sound fantastic on anything you would normally put a SM57 on. My only complaint is the mic clip is less then reliable however a standard Shure mic clip does the job perfect. Just about any microphone from Heil will enhance your sound, they really should be the go to mics for live production.

This Heil PR22 UT is an accurate, feedback free microphone that is a pleasure to use at a gig. Your voice won't get lost in the mix, unless your band is extremely loud. It looks good, sounds good and seems tough enough to take some abuse, ( which it will never get from me ). The things that were left out of the UT, utility package, are things that most gigging musicians would never need, and are not worth the additional cost. Apparently, someone at Heil must be practical!

I needed a vocal mic to pair with my Martin and Bose L1 Compact. I play a lot of small venues and have a pretty big voice. I LOVE the SM58, but always felt it colored my voice and took the edge off of my vocals. I finally settled on the Heil PR 22 and could not be happier. My vocals are obviously more clear and honest through this mic. I recommend this mic to any singer songwriter on a budget. You can't find a better mic for $.

Yes, this mic sounds really good, especially when you speak into it in a studio. Its lack of bass boost from proximity effect is nice. But as a live vocal mic? Forget it. Gain-before-feedback is awful, mainly because in order to reduce proximity effect without resorting to a "Variable-D" system (like EV RE-20) you need to make the pattern wider. And oh boy, it's pretty wide. So it's difficult to get loud in wedges, or in the house, and it does a great job of picking of stage wash. But it does make a nice snare drum mic. Not as good as a Beyer M201, but then it's half the price of the Beyer. ... More

This microphone really brings out a singers voice. The UT is the same microphone as the PR 22 except the UT model does not have the gold and black covers. It just has the steel cover as shown in the photo. You can get good sound without equalization. So your untrained sound person does not need to make any adjustments. The side talk on the microphone is amazing.

Very nice on my snare drum. More life and air in the upper mids than an SM57. i use one on top and one on bottom. Very happy. An instant improvement on my snare sound. The utility model PR22UT is less expensive and is the same as the regular PR22 without the fancy case and extra wind screens. It comes with a pencil type case, a foam windscreen and a mic clip. I got it on sale for $.

A friend recommended this microphone after I thoroughly hated the sound of the SM58 in some live recordings. I needed a handheld mic for the vocalists while also trying to multitrack record in a live scenario. This mic blew me away. It's worth having in your arsenal. I haven't tried it on a snare yet, but I have no doubt it will also be my go-to for snare.

Very nice microphone, set it up and did a side side blind comparison to a 1 year old SM-58 with my wife. Hands down the Heil microphone sounded better with both voices. Off axis rejection was very nice.

Most mics of this type roll of the low end to reduce handling noise. This one doesn't, which helps with male voices or any signals with significant low end content. I got it to to complement my AT2050 for mid-side recording, the results are excellent. You can't beat for the price.
