SHARP,SHARP,SHARP
Traded my old Canon gear to BH for this lens and the new Sony A7II. BH gave me fair price for my 5DII and 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. It took me a while to get used to a few things but I'm very happy with the switch. I've never used a lens this sharp. The images just pop, you won't regret buying this lens

a perfect lens
I use this lens for on-location product photography. The open aperture of 1.8 allows for a beautifully blurred background.

Sharp and Fast
This lens is the perfect companion to my a7. It is of similarly high build quality and feels excellent in the hand. More importantly, it takes beautiful, sharp photos every time. I've had it for several weeks and don't even have the smallest complaint. Highly recommended.

Perfection!
This is my only lens for my new Sony A7m2 canera and it might be the only one I'll ever need. Sharp, fast, etc. worth the price!

It Is What It Is
It's well-constructed Zeiss glass so I can't ask for much more. If you know photography and how to make use of lenses, you have nothing to complain about with this one.

nice lens
back to the beginning, a normal focal length. Not much professional use for me but reminds me of my first film camera. Fun.

No Stabilization. But awesome.
For me the lack of stabilization is a non-starter as we use this for hand held video and have become addicted. Maybe with the A7II we'll look at this again but it gave me the excuse to buy the 16-30. I don't feel badly. For stills the lens is awesome. But most of the stuff we shoot with the A7s looks awesome. I wish it would get in a little closer but it's so sharp you can crop with out losing much.

24-70mm is not a substitute!
I love my 24-70mm Sony lens! I wondered if I really needed the 55mm but have noticed since I've been shooting it that it really helps in low light. If you can swing it, GET BOTH!

Gem
This little lens delivers image quality I have only seen in medium format until now. Initially, I though it was a bit over prized, especially compared to a 50mm f1.8 for a Nikon or Canon DSLR. You really should rather be comparing this beast of a lens to the new Zeiss Otus monster. I consider this lens to be a must have, it will unlock the full potential of the Sony A7R.

Excellent Performer
An above average performer on the Sony A7 series, that appears equal to nearly any F4 70-200 out there today. It's very sharp at nearly all focal lengths and apertures and produces more than respectable results. Focussing appears fast with the A7s I've been using. Weaknesses would be that it doesn't really weigh any less than traditional Nikon/Canon 70-200/F4s so there isn't any direct savings in going Sony in this category. Bokeh is ok, but won'... Show More

Top Quality Prime
I had heard good things about this lens before I bought it and I don't think anyone will be disappointed. It's a rather large 55mm, a bit longer than one might expect, but otherwise preforms excellently both wide-open and stopped down. Bokeh is very creamy and the lens will meet your isolation needs every time. It's clearly the top performer of the early Sony FE lenses and probably deserves to be in nearly every A7 series owner's bag. 55mm makes a classic street lens or walkabout prime. Highly recommended.

Zeiss 55mm FE lens
As an artist in landscape, portrait and street photography. Extremely sharp lens, almost unreal. Honestly I can't say one bad thing about this lens.

This Lens is awesome!
I bought the Sony a7S with the 55mm f1.8 10 days ago. The lens is tack sharp. The focus is quick as shown by the action shot below. I love the depth of field options as shown by the detail of the children in the foreground and the blurred crowd in the background in the second shot.

Perfect
I have this on my a7. AF is fast and images are incredibly sharp. Great for portraits and streetphotography. Lens is light and feels well balanced on the a7.

Buy It
Bought it as starter for A7, even though I hated spending the money and was worried it would be too big (seemed large compared to DSLR 1.8 50 primes). Once I got it, though, it didn't seem large at all. About the same width as old manual glass. Length is a little longer, but if you put a DSLR 50 prime with an adapter on an A7/R, it'd probably be about the same length. Now that I've got it, I love it. Fantastic sharpness, quick AF, comfortable siz... Show More

So far so sharp
I've only had the lens for a few weeks now but so far it has lived up to the hype. I was using some older Nikon lenses on my a7R and they worked great. The problem I was having with those lense was the chromatic aberration. I was also getting a lot of color shift from shot to shot but with this 55 1.8 I have seemed to solve those issues. As far sharpness, you already know the thing is arguably the sharpest lense on the market.

Zeiss through and through.
After testing both the a7 and a7r, I tested the Zeiss 55, 35 and 24-70. Although I will add the 35/2.8 to my a7 system, the 55/1.8 reminded me of my earlier days of using Leica M Rangefinders and superior primes. This is an amazing lens, delivering edge to edge sharpness even wide open. The color is outstanding and the bokeh is creamy and perfect for portraiture...just as we have come to expect of Zeiss lenses. The build is solid.

Oh my g.., this lens is amazing!
I just got this lens for my A7S. I'd say it hasn't left the body, but that would be a little disingenuous since it's the only lens I have for the A7S. But WOW, the pics that I've been taking! The level of sharpness and wide open is incredible. All of my photographic dreams are coming true with this combination. I've attached a couple of OOC photos that I've taken lately. I wish I could attach more, the lens is that good.

Money well spent!
Love this lens, the best lens so far made by Sony-Zeiss. I bought this lens for my A7. IMHO this is better than the 24mm 1.8 that I'm using for my NEX 7. A must for the A7.

Beutiful color rendition
I have Zeiss 24 1.8 for my nex 7 that I loved dearly. Now that I have A7, I decided to get this one. I wasn't disappointed by this lens. The pictures are tact sharp. It looks like a 3d sometimes. This lens is a true keeper.

Best fast 50 for Sony FE mount.
I have been using my copy on a a7r and can easily use it on my a6000 also with a crop factor of course. Crispest, cleanest colors even in low light I have even seen. Comming from a 5D3 and a host of lenses. Drop Canon for this form factor and loving it. Will love it even more when I get all my lenses but for now using sel10118, 55 FE f1.8, Sigma 150 f2.8 macro with adaptor of course and want a lighter macro set up later. Also a6000 with 16-50 for... Mini Otus
For its size it's reasonably fast at f/1.8 but what really makes it a winner is the image quality! This is easily one of the sharpest normal primes I've ever shot, hence my Mini Otus title for this review.Compared to Canon L and Leica M glass, this little beauty holds its own, especially for the price.

Great Auto focus lens!
Probably the best autofocus lens they make for the Sony A7/R. The lens is super sharp even at Maximum aperture. Super expensive for a 1.8! Wished Sony made this a 50mm .

A GREAT PIECE OF GLASS
I'm a retired, or tired, professional photographer. In my working life, before the L lenses I saw only 3 super sharp lenses, one in a thousand kind of lenses; one was a screw-in 50mm f 1.8 Super Takumar (?), a Canon 50mm f 1.4 and a Rolli Planar f2.8. Every other lens I've owned for 4x5, 21/4x31/4 35mm were just lenses; good but not great. Now comes the 55mm Sonnar T FE f1.8! This thing is scary sharp! It is probably the sharpest 35mm normal lens... Show More
