Bang for the buck!

Feb 5, 2019

Snapped it on my new FS5mkii and used it for the first time on a two day C-level executive interview shoot. It had pretty good bokeh considering it only has seven blades. It is so lightweight its a bit frightening. I dont rent my gear out so I can live with it, but it makes the camera awful back heavy. What I really enjoyed was using it with Clear Image zoom. The only problem was with the shipping. See the photo - seriously thats how it was packed. Tough lens!!!

Great for the pricepoint

Oct 16, 2018

Its a great lens for what you pay...yes its lightweight and mostly plastic but for everyday use where you arent in a rugged environment it will hold up just fine. I didnt have any issues with it hunting focus (im on v3 of the lens) and got very sharp photos from it at f2.8. Also the autofocus motors will be in your audio recording if only using on camera mics but that didn't hurt my production in any way, just something to note. Overall i would recommend!

Cheap prime option

Dec 11, 2016

I have the sel50f18. It is a fabulous lens and great to even do manual focus. Compared to the build quality is cheaper and I guess that explains the price difference. I bought this as a gift for someone. There is definitely a Motor noise as it tries to focus. The speed is better with the new firmware. It is a cheap option and worth it's price. The pictures are great but the sharpness, I find gets better around 2.8. Wide open it is not as good.

Dont Believe The Negative Hype

Feb 19, 2019

The autofocus works fine with the A7III, it really does. Ive been using this lens for about a month, on several paid shoots and I havent missed a single shot because of the focusing. The bokeh is lovely, the skin tones are beautiful, and the handling is great. Its a nearly flawless lens for everything except pixel peeping. Im well aware that there are better lenses, but Ive been pleasantly surprised every time I pick up this lens to shoot.

Excellent choice With great customer services

Sep 19, 2018

I recently bought this lens and so far it has been a great choice of lens I made so far. The customer service is also up is excellent, however I was a little more of a can do better, I am not saying its a bad service, very excellent but I wish that I can purchase everything from B&H like my Moza Aircross cannot be shipped due to lithium battery restrictions. I hope my reviews are well within required. But at the of the day I am grateful.

I would definitely buy again.

Jan 22, 2017

My A7 is currently my backup system. I rely on old high quality Hexanon MF lenses for landscape pix. I added the Sony 50mm f1.8 lens after reading the reviews. IQ of the Sony lens is excellent, but the lens is a little noisy. There is actually a slight clunking sensation as the lens stops in AF mode. Nonetheless, considering the low price, the AF and the nice image quality, I am quite pleased. I also plan to upgrade the firmware.

Overpriced.

May 30, 2016

This lens has the feature set of a $150 AUD lens - except that it's $450 AUD. I wouldn't pay half that for it. Distracting bokeh at 2.8 or smaller (7 aperture blades), build quality like a lens a quarter of the price, loud focusing motor, and slow AF which only gets slower when stopping down as a result of the iris closing during acquisition. A disappointing release for something that is supposed to be a 'budget' lens.

Good for the price but low quality by Sony standards

Dec 19, 2019

I made an awesome return on investment for this cheap lens but as my photography because more demanding I find myself limited by its Chromatic Aberration wide open. Also the autofocus is the worst performing by any standard. It racks violently and noisily before each photo and usually fails to grab eye focus even in well lit close up environments. Video wise it also consistent racks focus for no apparent reason.

Not Perfect but good enough!

Jun 15, 2018

It is light! It is cheap! It is F1.8! Whit the help of A7M3 focusing system it can even catch a bird! Also it has a lot of problems. 1,Always use AF-C, when you use AF-S the focusing speed is terrible. Some time it just cannot focus. 2,You have to manual deferring in Lr, or it will be a disaster. 3,The sharpness is not so good as 55 ZA, very easy to find out different in 100%.

Auto-focus not reliable

May 12, 2017

Bought it about 2 months ago and used it in a few pro situations. AF hunts in and out for stills and is uselessly slow for video. I updated firmware and found no difference. AF not reliable for pro shoot. Was gonna return it, I got lazy and the 30 days were up. I'll use it as manual lens. Pics are very clean in manual and lens is feather light. But this should not be called an auto-focus lens.

Really Good Lens

Jul 4, 2019

IF you are using an A7III and the lens is on firmware version 3 it works great! It's plenty fast focusing. There is a slight noise but it's not bad. The lens is plenty sharp. I've done a little testing in low light with focusing and it's good. I'm sure the Zeiss 55 is somewhat better but this lens is cheap and small and light and it works well. It's absolutely worth having in your kit..

Great value

May 23, 2016

The lens takes very clear pictures. I have taken about 200 with it, and it worked great. It performed well in low light and has a fairly fast focus. The only issue I have had is it seems to be a snug fit when threading the lens on the camera body (A7). It takes more force than my other lenses to snap into place. I'm hoping this works out over a few uses. The lens is very lightweight.

Perfect Starter Prime

Jun 7, 2019

Bought this after returning my Sony 50mm f1.4, this lens while not the same performs just as well for what I need and makes it far easier to balance on a gimbal. I honestly dont think this lens is 1/7 the quality of the 1.4 which the which is 1/7, but that is just my opinion. If you need a 50mm to get started with the Sony Alpha system, this is a solid lens at a great price point.

Ok lens with some drawbacks...

May 17, 2016

For the price, it's pretty nice little compact prime.. Nice bokah at 1.8-2.0, nice color rendition, light and compact... The major drawback is very slow autofocus as everyone already mentioned, and that is due to mechanical geared focusing mechanism, so unfortunately I doubt the firmware update will fix this... If you can live with slow autofocus, it's not a bad lens overall...

Fantastic

Jan 2, 2020

This lens is fantastic, photos are super sharp even indoors. Best of all, its not an expensive lens. Ive read some reviews that its slow to focus, I personally didnt think it was that slow for my needs (mostly people). It does make a slight sound when it focuses but its not super loud, not sure if that would interfere when shooting video with sound. I use it with my a6500.

very good

Jan 30, 2018

have had it for just a few hours. the mounting to my A7ii was a bit stiff but not bad....it was the first thing I noted. Focus sound was not bad...muted and I'd guess one fourth as loud as the camera shutter sound. low amplitude tone, not harsh or bothersome. after a dozen shots inside and outdoors, the images are sharp I'm looking forward to a complete workout.

Not even worth it

Sep 23, 2019

I love Sony, but this has to be the worst lens on the market. Even at only $200.00, I sent it back. The lens construction feels cheap even for a mirrorless lens, I had a hard time tightening it all of the way to the mount. It didn't want to focus at all and the few pictures I took come out to soft. I recommend saving your money and purchasing a higher end prime.

The First Sony E-Mount Lens You Should Buy

Jun 9, 2016

For $248, this is stunning performance. Looks plastic but very good plastic for $248, noisily but not that bad. this is a huge bang for the buck and I feel every Sony user should own one. When I first held this lens I was surprised at how good is images. Compact, lightweight, easy to carry, F1.8 maximum aperture for low-light shots and it has aspherical element.

great lens

Feb 27, 2018

This very reasonably priced all purpose lens is useful in a wide variety of situations, low light and street photos, for example. I am not a professional photographer and wished to buy a useful lens with spending too much. I think the quality would be considered excellent by most people except perhaps for those with an exceptionally trained or professional eye.

Best lens for the price!

Mar 1, 2020

If you watch youtube or read in-depth reviews, you will see how this lens is not perfect. However, for the money, it is the best lens you will buy for your Sony E-mount Full frame. You will never second guess buying this lens, but it might make you second guess why you spent 4x - 8x as much for a very small increase in performance for a different 50mm.

Sharp but slow focus

May 17, 2016

This lens is a great value for the money. It focuses slower than my FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA lens and I expect that with a lens that costs $500 less. But the focus is sharp - especially at F4 or higher. The lens is mostly plastic and it feels that way. But for $250 I wouldn't expect anything else. If you're in the market for a f1.8 prime this is a good deal.

Worth the Price

I read countless reviews and saw many YouTube videos on the negatives of this lens but after purchasing it I'm glad I did. I don't know if it's the camera I have which is a A7R2 but the focus is fast and sharp. I don't need to do a comprehensive review but I did a real life one and definitely recommend this lens as a good walk around portrait lens.

Not as bad as you would think at this price range

May 31, 2018

OK, this is a cheap lens price wise but for $200, GET IT! I've used it on a6300 and a7iii. (even FS7's I have) Wide open, corners are a little off but 5.6- 5.8 corners are very sharp. AF is a little bit noisy and not awesome fast but...It's $200 and well worth that price. For the average fun shooter this is a no brainer and should be in your bag.
