Really solid performer
Do I wish this was a constant f4? Absolutely, sure, but for what it is, it does an amazing job. One thing I personally did was use a sharpie to mark on the zoom ring where the aperture changed so I could take full advantage of the f/4.5 and f/5 parts of the zoom to get those extra partial stops. You're better off shooting 150mm at f/5 than 152mm at f/5.6 or 114mm at f/4.5 than 116mm at f/5 IMO. It's super sharp, as its DXO ratings will attest ... Show More

Excellent 100-400mm for Sony e mount
I would rate this lens at 4 1/2 stars... The Sony - FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS is an excellent lens for most telephoto needs, though it is a bit slow to find focus in low light situations, and the overall build quality is not as good as the Canon 100-400mm Lii (which I regard as the "gold standard" for this sort of lens), though it is a bit lighter than the Canon version. This lens is excellent!
I purchased this 100-400mm zoom lens recently from B&H along with the new A7rIII and have only started to use it. I also purchased the 1.4x teleconverter which gives an extra 160mm of effective focal length. It definitely outweighs the camera so the tripod mount is essential. It needs a good deal of light or a stable platform to perform well. I haven't tried on my A7s yet but, last night, I got the attached pictureof the SuperBlueMoonbetween the clouds using this lens, the A7rIII and the 1.4X teleconverter.

A Perfect Pairing to the A7RIII.
I shoot mainly fashion and portrait and this lens ROCKS! Super fast focus, Sharp did I say sharp? It is about the same size as the 70-200 GM but gives me more reach. Also the Bokeh is nice and creamy. Very pleased with this purchase. I would buy again.

AWESOME!
This is a FANTASTIC lens for wildlife. The lens is sharp with fast autofocus, especiallymounted on my A7R III. It's a bit heavy, but that'sexpected given itsrange. I recommendusing a monopod or tripod as carrying this around all day will be bothersome. I haven't tried this lens for sports but I highly recommend it for anyone shooting wildlife.

NOT for video!
If all you shoot are photos, this is a great lens. But if you shoot video, especially wildlife video, you best look elsewhere. The OSS in the lens does not activate without pretty excessive shaking and then turns off if the excessive shaking stops. If there is only modest or minimal camera movement/shaking, but still enough to make the video unwatchable, the OSS does nothing, zero. I guess nobody else is using this lens for video. Not impressed with OSS for video
I don't know if my lens is defective or not. Mounted on my A7S and A7S2 bodies with the lens OSS switched on, when I am shooting wildlife video it seems to take an excessive amount of camera or lens shaking for the stabilization to kick in. At 400mm or when using the 2.0 converter, when shooting wildlife video there is a lot of unacceptable movement in the resulting video. Having trouble autofocusing
I don't know whether it's me or the lens, but I'm having a hard time getting the lens to auto-focus. I'm going to have some of my photographer friends take a look to see if it's me or the lens.

I highly recomend this lens
I am using this lens with a Sony A7 RII and the results are terrific. The autofocus is fast even in indoor low light conditions. I am especially pleased that Sony included a tightening ring adjustment. That prevents the lens from creeping as you walk around. This lens is a keeper. In January I am off to Africa with this lens and the Sony A 7 RII.

Trouble could be lurking
I purchased this lens about 3 months ago. It has already gone into the repair department while still under warranty and had to pay to ship the lens on my own dime. Come on for a lens that has less than a couple of hundred actuations. I has only worked for one project and now it is as if the camera a lens are not communicating it absolute does nothing when pared with the new A9 and A7R2. it will not focus in any of the focus modes. Seem we're beta testers for Sony now
I got a new Sony 100-400 but had to send it back because it had slight spacing shift in the elements that caused it to not focus properly between 250-400mm, put a bad taste in my mouth about it In the old days you could buy a telephoto from Canon or Nikon use it the field the same day at a sports event and be happy with the results Seem we're beta testers for Sony now

Very Sharp and not too heavy. good all around Telephoto lens
It is a very sharp lens even at 400mm and is a perfect match for my A7RII. Very good all around Telephoto lens, good for Zoos, Flowers, Butterflies, Wildlife and more. The build quality is very good, the metal hood snaps in position, has a button to release it and has a window to turn a polarizer. Really Right Stuff has a replacement foot for an Arca Swiss quick release which works really nice. I also ordered the FE 1.4 Teleconverter to go with this but it is on back order, can't wait to try it.

Fantastic lens, when compared with Sony a9
I'm a bird-in-flight, wildlife shooter, coming from many years with Canon. I was introduced to this lens/body combination by a Canon Explorer of Light that was leading a puffin shooting workshop. I love this lens
If you can handle a lens with a bit of weight, I highly recommend this lens. It is SHARP, it is QUICK, and I love it. I need a little more length, so I plan on getting the 1.4x telextender for it.

Amazing!!
Just a great lens! Wonderful sharpness and color rendering produces outstanding images. Clearly superior to my previously owned Canon 100-400 II (which is also a superb optic). If you can manage 2.5K and have use for this range, you will not be disappointed.

Yes it's expensive, but boy, is it a great lens. It focuses fast, focuses close (1m), and is so, so sharp. If you can afford it, you will be happy.

Very excellent
This lens is relatively small in size and light for a 400mm zoon lens. So its a great travel/hiking lens. Because its a bit slow it can be a challenge under low light conditions, but digital cameras are making slower lens very workable. I use it mostly for large wildlife but I have also found that it can close focus so it allows one to make some dramatic photographs with a lot of compression and nice out of focus backgrounds. Not good focus and for what it does way way over priced
Used it with a A9 and it just is not a good performer. I had high hopes for this lens, focus was fair and there was softness in the corners. I also have a Nikon D500 and there lens is quick to focus and sharp in the corners, compaired to the nikon 1000 - 5000mm lens it no contest, but then ad in the price difference What was Sony thinking

This lens is a beast. I use it with an A9 and A7RII.. Has been used primary for sports photog (football). Auto focus is very fast, especially if you activate shutter focus - this is key when zooming in an out. Reduces focus lag. Using clear image zoom - (look up this feature if you don't know what it is) in low light at night under stadium lighting is really amazing.. I did have to crank up the iso but the images were still stunning and crisp. I can't wait for the 400mm prime Sony is working on..

Definitely recommend lens
Mounted this tele lens on my Sony alpha 6500 to create 150-600mm tele. I am a nature photographer and this past week spent in the Everglades, shooting wildlife, macro and landscapes. For the birds I mounted the lens on tripod and hand held using a stock shoulder brace. In auto focus it was quick and accurate. Nice job Sony
This lens is sharp. Focus acquisition is fast and the detail is amazing. Only negative item of note, is the length of the lens as the focal length increases. Build quality is good. At 100mm the lens is of moderate size and easy to pack - great option for the traveling photographer.
