Love at first click
My last mid-range zoom lens was Canons 70-200 f/2.8 L II, which I had been using more and more with the 2X extender for wildlife. I had already made the leap into Sonyland but still had my Canon body until... it went down a waterfall. So instead of replacing like for like, I decided to go full Sony. Rented the 70-200 GM over the holidays and liked it... but didnt love it. I already had the 85 1.8 Zeiss Batis so my Portrait needs were filled. The ... Show More

great for wildlife photography
I had a Sony 70-200 f4, which works well for general tourism photos, but fell short for wildlife. I bout this lens with X2converter.it works great

One Great Zoom
I purchased the 70-200 f4 before this lens came out. I'm not a big zoom person because of the weight. Sony lent me this lens for a shooting trip to the Palouse. Never thought of hand holding this zoom but was amazed at the sharpness when I did. The optical zoom is beyond your wildest expectations. This lens is worth every penny.

Taking Photography to a new level
I have been taking pictures for 60 years, from a Kodak Brownie, to SLR, to SLT to mirrorless. This lens paired with the Sony A7Riii takes my photography to a new level. The lens is as sharp as any I have used. The optical Stabilization is unbelievable. Co-ordinated with the stabilization in the camera I can hand hold at 400mm for less than 1/100 of a second with out visible shake. It is clear that my 70 year old hands can't hold a 3 lb lens that ... Show More

Amazing pictures in low light.
Contemplated purchasing the Sony 200-600mm but glad it was out of stock during decision. Shot for the first time this past Sunday in our sanctuary (no flash) and was pleasantly surprised on the detail of this lens. I used my Sony A7iii. I have a Sony 1.4x teleconverter and can't wait to see the magnification once I used it to get my original max distance of a 200-600. I have a 70-200mm and the weight is equal.

Unbelievable
Every review is true. I reviewed Flickr image web site to see the quality of this lens. Fantastic! It's quiet and quick to focus. The images are sharp and colors saturated. Everything that I have come to know about Sony optics is proven true with this glass and construction! So glad to have added this to my bag!

Great long zoom!
Honestly, I have been a little slow to warm up to this lens, but it fills the need for a longer zoom. The slow-to-warm part is probably due to the fact that I purchased the 70-200 /2.8 GM first; its focusing speed, wide aperture, handling, and outstanding performance make that one a tough act to follow. However, the extra reach of the 100-400 GM is worthwhile, and it performs amazingly well. The attached pics from a high school football game wer... Show More

I want to rate 4.5 Stars
Great lens super sharp! My 2 complaints and they are minor but keep if from 5 stars are; 1) You really need to twist the zoom ring a full turn to zoom from 100-400. Would prefer if it was a quarter turn 2) Zoom lock is missing. When your walking around I do not like that it moves out to 400mm due to gravity. Would be nice to lock it at 100

Best long lens I have used
This is the best lens of any type I have ever used. The build is sturdy and smooth, images are sharp and well rendered, all of this in a package that is relatively lightweight. The lens is a joy to use.

A Really Sharp and Fast Lens
This lens is fantastic using it with a Sony A9 camera as one can capture birds in flight images fast. Not only fast but the images come out sharp as the AF locks on almost every time. This is my go to lens when I want to hand hold the camera setup for a period of time. I also have the Sony 200-600mm lens that I like better when I use a tripod. Though today I will be testing that lens out without a tripod. The only negative issues is that the lens... Show More

Amazing lens for the money!
Fantastic lens for the size and money, though it would be better served as a larger format lens. Still, works great... focus strays at times on super fast erratic action.

Not Perfect but it's Hard to Beat the IQ and Compactness
Your options are this, lug a huge 400mm+ lens around, compromise and get the 70-300 that doesn't have the reach and can't use a teleconverter or adapt a Sigma lens and come up short on autofocus and tracking and wish you would have just sprung for something better. The 100-400mm is the perfect fit if you're willing to spend the money. It just fits the bill without much compromised. I saved a little buying it used but now that I own it I would h... Show More

Perfect lens for a Canon convert
Excellent lens - I'm new to Sony, coming from Canon, and this lens painlessly replaces my Canon 100-400 II, which I loved. Fast, same close focus, used it practically like a macro this week on Monarch Butterfly caterpillars. I even shot movies with it. No complaints.

Sharp and Fast AF
This is my first G Master lens. I really like how fast the auto focus is when using it with my a6300 camera body. The pictures I take with this lens are sharp and detailed. Plus this lens is much lighter than my SAL70400G (A-mount) lens. I'm including a picture I recently took. It is straight out of the camera (SOOC).

Very flexible wildlife setup
The 100-400 GM deserves the 'GM' rating, as it provides excellent IQ in a compact and easy to transport package. Paired with the 1.4x in good lighting conditions it was the best option for wildlife field photography for the traveler before the release of the 200-600. The advantage of this setup is to have a faster lens without the 1.4X, with less reach, when the lighting is not ideal. The image stabilization is excellent, and it focuses very quic... Show More

Good while it was current
Pros: -Good weight for its size -Image quality and focus speed very good for this type of lens -77mm filter thread = your old filters work on it =) -Works with Sony's teleconverter Cons: -Overpriced -Telescoping barrel The Sony 100-400mm GM works well for intended user range, despite being very expensive. . Like most large telephoto lenses, the barrel extends when zoomed, which can be inconvenient in tight shooting spots. The weight is not ove... Show More

Must have in the bag
This lens is a MUST have in the bag. I use it primarily for motorsports photography, but have since started branching out. This lens is outshining my current camera frame now, and already has me looking for upgrades. Images are insanely crisp, and the zoom is easy to manipulate. If you are on the post about this lens, stop contemplating and just pull the trigger already!

Just what the doctor ordered!
I've always dreamed of having a quality telephoto zoom lens, and at age 52, I decided to pull the trigger. I love everything about the image that this lens produces. The fact that it can focus at close distances was very important to me as a wildlife photographer. I can see why it's a G master lens.

Best long telephoto zoom
This lens is the best long zoom I have ever used including the Sigma 50-500 and both A mount 70-400 zooms. Sharpness is outstanding even at 400 mm with or without the 1.4X telextender. Focus speed is more than adequate for birds in flight.

The best long telephoto zoom.
i use this lens primarily for bird photography. Sharpness at 400 mm is exceptional - better than anything else i have used including the Sony A mount 70-400 lens. Focus speed is fast enough for birds in flight. At 400 mm maximum magnification is 0.35 X so it can also be used as a long semi macro. Check out the review by DxOMark.

Superb telephoto
I have only had this lens for a short while but I am already thoroughly impressed. This is a hefty piece of glass but not overly so...the build quality is top notch. The images I capture are razor sharp that just ooze quality. This lens makes me excited to find new and creative ways to use it. It's expensive no doubt but I have absolutely no regrets about my purchase.

poor fit
Lens and converter seem to be just as advertised, sharp and fast focus! What is irritating and concerning is the fact that neither one sit tight against my A7Rll housing, both have some slight play. My concern is will it get worse in time? Will it damage or wear my housing over time? I have a Carl Z 55, a G Master 90 Macro, my Carl Z 16/35 is somewhat a large lens and a 28mm. All my other lenses fit tight, no play in them whatsoever. I like the 100-400 lens, heck, I love the lens, but whether or not I keep it/them remains to be seen.
