Sound is much like that of the Beta 57, but in a more compact housing. Great for drum kits where the size of a 57 may get in the way. If I have one gripe about this mic (and the beta 52), is that after much use the rubber in the joint tends to wear, and sometimes fall out, though this is easily remedied through basic maintenance, or a small piece of cardboard.

This mic is all that we use for instrument recording... we own six of them in the studio. They are pricey, but deliver the fidelity that we have come to expect from Shure. Overall, we have found these to be very durable as well- some of these have been beaten to death and still function perfectly. We have compared this via waveform in Logic to our top-end mics, and have been very impressed with what it pics up.

Using as a vocal mic while drumming, which is great for size and durability, but lots of bleed over of cymbals.

This is my favorite mic I've ever used for recording. It's a very dynamic dynamic microphone! It sounds good with anything I've used tried it on. If I were to only keep one of my mics it would be this one.

I hate, repeat hate, an SM57 on a live mic'd snare drum (that is when the sound engineer doesn't know how to eq). This mic alleviates that issue by it's frequency sweet spot being right for a snare drum in the first place.

I don't use these because they have the "best" sound characteristics, but for snare drums, in certain placements, they offer excellent rejection.

I own four of these. They are my go-to for drums because they are clearer than SM57s and stay out of the way, due to the swivel head. They are great on guitars as well as other things.
