A great entry-level Mac with lots of room to grow

The good news is yes, it is fast very fast. It's sleek and small. It seems durably made. The bad news is, as some others have said, connectivity and the MISERABLE wifi thing. The 2018 Mac mini is not as robust all around in some ways as an iMac or Pro machine is... There are issues with the two USB ports along with Bluetooth / Wi-fi connectivity that need to be addressed accommodated for, but once you research these problems the solutions make them much more reliable to handle for studio use, for instance using ethernet instead of wifi and getting a shielded usb cable to plug in an external bluetooth stick. Ordered the Mac Mini (2018) with 8Gb of ram and 1Tb SSD, and at the same time ordered 32Gb of Crucial ram. I ran the computer for a few days, did a full manual set-up to more-or-less match my ancient Mac Pro (2008) on which I run Adobe CC photographers bundle but could not upgrade to the 2020 version. Great Mac!
I bought the 3.2Ghz 6 core i7, 8GB, 256GB SSD. My only regret is that I didnt spend just a bit more and get the 512GB SSD. Otherwise, this is a great replacement for my 2011 iMac. Of course, I had to buy some things like a monitor, keyboard and trackpad. The Mini came with 8GB but I upped it to 32GB. Except for graphics the Mini is a beast! Small but ready for anything
I bought my mini with the Core i7, 8GB RAM, and the 1 TB SSD. I replaced the RAM with 32GB and added an external 2 TB disk to use with Time Machine. After a little misadventure, I managed to trash the OS to where it would not boot nor could I boot to the recovery OS. This is my 4th mac. My newest one before this was a 2015 Macbook pro. From what I hear this was the last year Apple made a good laptop/desktop. In 2016 the professional photographers left Apple in droves and went to windows. I left windows in 2009 for the reliability in Apple and had many years of great service. Fast, good connectivity, but mediocre value.
I bought the basic speed unit with minimal RAM and a large SSD (1TB), which was outrageously priced. The large SSD was necessary since apple in their normal mercenary manner did not allow the SSD to be upgraded, being soldered on the motherboard. I added extra RAM myself. Good little utility player
I got a great machine with Geekbench scores on the upper end of the performance distribution. Memory installation was pretty easy after watch the myriad of YouTube videos outlining the process. I set this machine to be a audio workstation, general purpose computer and local file server. The 2018 Mac Mini I purchased is working great. I chose the 3.2Ghz i7 6 core, 8GB 256GB Gigibit Ethernet model. I replaced the 8GB of RAM with 32GB. The system is very fast, in some cases so fast you dont realize the function has been done. The Mac mini is (2018) s everything I needed except one major flaw. Like many Mac mini owners, I need to use the external ports (thunderbolt 3 and USB) to connect external storage drives. Macs randomly eject external drives and Ive experienced it with multiple drives, different manufacturers, on both port types (TB3/SB), with multiple cables. Big monster in small package is the definition of this setup. The top of the processors is one of the most powerful now in the mac line , more powerful than almost all mac pro, all macbook pro and the rest. Works great but connectors surprised me.
This is a fantastic, speedy computer. However, Apple does not use mini-display ports any more and it would not run my beloved LED Cinema Display, even with adapters. The adapter boxes say so in red letters. I had to buy their LG UltraFine display to edit photos, although the Mac mini has one HDMI port that will operate most other monitors and most digital TVs. Replacement for 2012 mac mini
My 2012 Mac Mini was nearing end of life. As a long time Mac user I wanted a desktop mac with at either 1TB SSD or 2 TB Fusion. No such options for the mac mini and the iMacs with that much storage are astronomical. So I went with the 512 SSD Mac Mini i3/8MB Ramand migrated my data to a NAS. Overall its working well. Even with an eGPU and a Sapphire 580. If you get one, I recommend the Sonnet 350 watt eGPU. People complain that it messes with the small size of the mini but it sits on the floor. Too bad the longer TB3 cable is $50. Otherwise, you could be out the door for $400 for the eGPU and a good graphics card. Apple has a few bugs to work out. 1. the can not remote trouble shoot your new mac mini the pushes end up going to your old mac mini. 2. the mac mini (new) will not allow you to format the drive. the recommended cure to fix Number 1. 3.
