Brilliantly sharp even wide open
I use this lens extensively indoors in low light and for portraits. Therefore it is mostly set to F1.8, where it is tack sharp in the centre and very sharp in the corners. Bokeh is dreamlike and buttery. The lens is light, though a bit larger than I anticipated. Build quality is good, and the focus ring turns smoothly. Auto focus is fast.

LOVE this lens!
Extremely sharp... great for low light (especially with the A7s) Very good separation and great color. Generally good flare control. Minimal amount of distortion. Good for portraits, landscapes, architecture and capturing action. Autofocus is very fast. Quality construction. sleek design. great functionality. SOLID. Nice compact lens.

Great lens
This lens is unbelievably sharp. I just came back doing some street photography and the results were absolutely stunning. The 3D effect that Zeiss is known for came shining through. I also own the Sony Zeiss 35mm 2.8 which is also very good, but I think this lens is sharper. Not a cheap lens by any means, but you get what you pay for.

The best in its class for the A7R II
If you are an art photographer and looking for the fineness quality, this is the lens to build your set of lens around. Quality is great, AF is excellent, balance on the A 7R II is great. It just feels right. Add the Sony Distagon T* FE 35mm F/1.4 Za Lens, the 85mm, 25mm, 18mm Batis lenses from Zeiss and you'll be one happy camper!

Amazing Lens, Focuses Fast
I'll be honest, at first I wasn't going to get this lens because I have a canon 50mm. This of course being a native e mount for my a7r, I got it anyway. It's great, comes with a nice leather bag/case and a lens hood. The focus on this thing is really faster, except the manual can be strange sometimes. Not really much else to say!

Well worth the expense!
I bought the Sony zoom lens that is packaged with the a7II camera. It's not close to the quality of the Zeiss lenses that are produced for Sony. The lens is solid and will no doubt last a lifetime. I traded in my Canon system to go for full-frame mirror-less. And my first Zeiss lens is just a start. I'm delighted!

Could not be happier
I have the FE 50 f/1.8 and for the money it's pretty amazing. The 55mm is however in a class all by itself. This lens is tack sharp with beautiful contract and color. It's my favorite street lens as it's smaller than most of the other higher end Sony glass especially at that f stop. I love this lens, get one!

The Best I've Ever Had
Thanks to Sony A7r APS-C Size Capture, I have two high performance F1.8 prime lenses (55mm and 83mm) for the price of one. The Morning Frost photo was taken with APS-C Size Capture (15MP) for better telephoto coverage and perspective. I didn't notice any loss of image quality at all. The lens is fantastic.

SHARP,SHARP,SHARP
Traded my old Canon gear to BH for this lens and the new Sony A7II. BH gave me fair price for my 5DII and 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. It took me a while to get used to a few things but I'm very happy with the switch. I've never used a lens this sharp. The images just pop, you won't regret buying this lens

Mini Otus
For its size it's reasonably fast at f/1.8 but what really makes it a winner is the image quality! This is easily one of the sharpest normal primes I've ever shot, hence my Mini Otus title for this review.Compared to Canon L and Leica M glass, this little beauty holds its own, especially for the price.

Nice Prime Lens
I acquired this lens to go with my Sony a7r, and with limited choices available opted for this 55mm over the 35mm. I'm very happy I did. The lens has some heft to it, solidly built and the zoom ring feels tight like you would expect from Zeiss glass. I have no issues, but haven't used it much so far.

What an excellent prime.
There isn't much to dislike about this lens. Maybe some fringing in difficult conditions? It's so sharp and contrasty, and has that Zeiss look, I love every picture that comes out of this lens. Super fast, accurate, and silent AF too. If you have the funds and the interest you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic prime for the Sony A7
I was concerned about the price of this lens for a nifty fifty. However the results are just stunning with this lens. It's a perfect normal prime for the Sony A7/A7r cameras. Sharpness is great across the frame from wide open. If I had to live with only one lens for this camera, this would be it.

Sharpest Lens I ever owned!
Bought this lens to go with my A7 II and I am impressed with sharpness of this lens, I have done some low key portraits and results were phenomenon. The test results on@ also confirms my observation. The build quality is very good and it is very light weight. The Bokeh is beautiful on this lens

Couldn't be happier
I was deciding between this and the 50mm 1.4. After looking at both, I decided to go with the slightly cheaper option. I'm thrilled with the choice. I'm sure the the 1.4 would be great on occasion but for 400 less and a significant size reduction this is a crisp, lightweight prime. Excellent.

A must have for the Sony Alpha 7RIi
Unfortunately, there isn't yet a wide range of lenses for tahe Sony Alpha. The Rii with its exceptional resolutionrequires high quality lenses. This 55mm fits the bill. The quality is fantastic and the lens can be used in most situations. A must have complement to yur investment into the rii.

Amazing Lens!
This lens is worth it's dollar. I'm using it on the Sony a6000 with the view to upgrade to the A7 series. This lens is fast, it's light and just right for portraits giving you plenty of bokeh. It's made of sturdy materials and feels expensive. This is a great addition to your lens selections.

Great lens but noisy
Super sharp. Very nice lens. My only complaint is the aperture noise when not on AF-C mode. I hear loud noise when pressing the shutter halfway to focus, when turning on/off the camera or when adjusting the aperture. People say it is normal but for a $1000 this lens should be near flawless.

This Lens is awesome!
I bought the Sony a7S with the 55mm f1.8 10 days ago. The lens is tack sharp. The focus is quick as shown by the action shot below. I love the depth of field options as shown by the detail of the children in the foreground and the blurred crowd in the background in the second shot.

Sharp, small, fast
Yeah, it's $1k. Yeah, it's only f/1.8. But guess what? This is the sharpest 50ish mm lens with autofocus: IN THE WORLD. Small price to pay, don't you think? I use it on an A7R II, and this lens combined with the f/1.8 aperture allow me take hand-held photos in extremely low light.

Seems like a good lens
Seems like a good lens so far. Doesn't focus quite as fast as the kit lens, in my limited subjective experience, but photos are decent quality, though a little pixelated in low light due to the f/1.8 max aperture. For the price and size this lens should probably go down to f/1.4.

Minimalist design
So far I have not tried it, I bought it on offer and I'm waiting for my sony 7iii to arrive. I thought it would be smaller, I think it's the ideal size for a mirrorless camera. The design is minimalist and very solid. Without a doubt the construction is of very good quality.

Sharp and Fast
This lens is the perfect companion to my a7. It is of similarly high build quality and feels excellent in the hand. More importantly, it takes beautiful, sharp photos every time. I've had it for several weeks and don't even have the smallest complaint. Highly recommended.

Excellent for a Zeiss-branded Sony Lens
Lens feels premium with metal body, but AF motors are loud and a little slow. Bokeh, color, and contrast are superior to the f/1.4 version of this lens. Images have unique character which are similar to the pure Zeiss lenses. Worth picking up when you can find it on sale.
